Yeah, can that really be legit?

Kane's stupid brother negotiated a very unimpressive £200k a week in 2018, coming off plenty of world class seasons, I doubt they make this sort of demand, unless they politely wanted to avoid saying "not interested".

Buying Kane for £100 million and paying him £500k a week for five years would amount to a combined package of £230 million (£130 million in wages) - even the most pro-Kane'ers would acknowledge the absurdity of paying that, even if we had the money, which we clearly don't.
Yes, I read the article from Hirst who is a Tier 1 source, the man doesn't speculate so It is as legit as it can be from a sports journalist.

Kid, move on.
 Hah !

Only when you'll accept money not always reflecting the reality around us. I hope I'll see you during tweets about signing additional striker, hopefully in August. Then, there will be time to discuss some selective options.

That’s the concern. We are in desperate need of goal right now, not 2-3 years down the line.

I don't think it makes much difference right now, whereas in 2-3 years it could do.

City are at the top of the wave, and no signing we make closes that gap to an even fight. I'd rather we spent looking to peak in 18-24 months time rather than put ourselves in a hole trying to win the PL this season and suffer for it for summers to come.

What bit about move on do you not understand?

No one drops 70m plus on a striker punt who has had one season in Italy, and even then didn't set the league on fire. Literally no one, barring us.

I'm accepting of us doing it under desperation, which this is. But don't harp on about Kane parallels, because it just doesn't fly. Who gives a feck if he was better than Kane at 20. Progression doesn't happen linearly, it's just a terrible flaw to hang your hat on.
Hang on…..are you claiming that Hojlund is a desperation buy?!:lol::lol::lol:

Moaning about the signings and that you hope to be proved wrong couldn't be more negative. Why don't you instead be happy that we seem to have signed the players that the manager wanted and keep your negativity to yourself for the time being.

What do you define as a stone cold sure hit though? And do we include the ridiculous price tag too in that evaluation? Because IMO the jury is still out on him. I've watched probably every Chelsea game last season and he wasn't spectacular for that amount of money. Yes, he was their best midfielder but the rest were absolute garbage so it doesn't say that much. I'd rather pay 75m for a striker prospect than 110m for a CDM, who alledgedly is an amazing box to box yet I haven't seen it in the Prem. I wouldn't classify him as a stone cold sure hit at all.
Yeah, he hasn't been bad, but the fact that he wasn't 'sure to be' or 'stone cold' (why would he be, after half a proper season, and playing largely at Benfica, some good performances for his national side in a Messi led system aside) is only borne out further by the wildly differing opinions over how good he's actually been. Its like Declan Rice - we're generally sure he's a 'good' player to some degree, able to do certain defensive and box to box stuff pretty effectively, but whether he's a 105m player or even one able to reliably transfer his talents to a front-foot side going for titles is up in the air. Hojlund has as many demonstrable positive attributes as he has question marks, just like both those players in different ways...

I disagree. Our defence is very good now (generally - individual mistakes excepted) which is why our GD was low +ive.

A clinical striker on top of Marcus’s output would turn irritating draws into comprehensive wins. We wouldn’t be far away at all.

Also I don’t understand the bold part. Can you elaborate?

So by all accounts the main options for striker this summer were:

Osimhen - £120-150m
Kane - £100m+
Gonçalo Ramos - £65m
Kolo Muani - £80m
Hojlund - £64m

Only really Ramos was in the same price range potentially. We kept being linked to Kolo Muani as a alternative so maybe that price could’ve been negotiated down. However, he seems quite different from the profile of Hojlund and more similar to our options of using Rashford or Martial (when fit).

Similar deals in recent years:

Darwin Nunez to Liverpool - €75m riding to €100m potentially.
Luka Jovic to Real Madrid - €60m
Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus - €70m rising to €91.6m
Joao Felix to Atletico - €126m
Cody Gakpo - £37m riding to £50m
Alexander Isak - €70m rising to €75m

Interestingly those would largely be considered failures but I’m assuming some of the more recent £50m+ fees have to start working out. Isak and Gakpo have done ok.

Top clubs have had veteran strikers dominating for a long time. Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Benzema, Aguero, Ibrahimovic etc all had such long careers that we haven’t seen Madrid etc have to cycle through 3-4 strikers in order hit on the next one.

The point in the end is that Hojlund largely fits into the price point of other young strikers who had little track record. If he succeeds then it’ll be worth the price paid. If he doesn’t he’ll be sold for £20-30m in 3 years time or he’ll end up a squad player. That’s what happens at the big clubs.

The list of more established forward options wouldn’t scream obvious success. The like Mitrovic, Taremi, Ben Yedder, Fullkrug etc.

The talk of fees required to get Kane are ludicrous for a 30 year old with 1 season left on his contract. Paying out 100m+ plus wages of around 400-550k a week would be a stupid decision, when in all likelihood no one is catching a Haaland led City. I'd rather invest in young up and coming talent that can develop together over the next 2-3 years, whilst still having the financial leeway to supplement that next summer etc

I’d be amazed if Kane is demanding that kind of money.
He wants to leave to win trophies so why would he decide to price himself out of a move to the only two clubs that have shown any kind of interest? It doesn’t make sense.

Not surprising to me. It's just letting clubs know what he's going to ask when he actually moves for free next season. I heavily doubt he moves this season.

Only PSG & Middle-East clubs would pay him that wage.
Bayern will pay it -ask their fans. They pay huge wages to the top tranche of players in their squad, ala Barca.

I'd love him to sit out the final year of the contract and come to us as a hybrid 9/10 to complete ETH's first cycle and win the league in season three (i think we'll still miss out this season, give City's strength and where we are in developing the team) but Tottenham will have something close to 90m on the table without having to sell to a 'rival' (at least in levy's mind) and Kane will get his money plus a virtually guaranteed trophy or two by the end of this season.

I don’t think we should be that pessimistic about our chances this year.

City losing Mahrez and Gundogan is a loss of depth. Possibly Walker.

Kovacic is a good replacement but I don’t think he’s as good as Gundogan.

There doesn’t seem much of plan to replace Mahrez. They’ve been linked with Raphinha which is underwhelming.

Gvardiol doesn’t really move the needle given how well Ake has played recently.

Enzo was a stone cold sure hit. Hojlund is not.
Don't agree that Enzo was a sure hit at all, and still has loads to prove. In my eyes, a £70m gamble on a potential match winner has a lot more upside potential than Enzo, who, as you have rightly said, didn't do poorly for them but it barely impacted Chelsea's fortunes.

Paying a premium for that potential impact makes a lot more sense than a holding midfielder who is only as influential as the whole of the team. If Hojlund is a hit, we turn into genuine title challengers. If we bought Enzo and had no striker this summer in an alternate scenario, that wouldn't be the case.

Not arguing the pros and cons of each individual, but I think it's useful to put the fee into perspective.

It makes perfect sense because his other option is to leave on a free next summer to a club of his choice, meaning he'll be in an even more powerful position to secure a huge contract. Why would he not milk this situation for everything he can get when it's almost certainly going to be his last big payday in a major league? He's a hugely reliable and prolific goal scorer and playmaker in a market that is severely short on world class strikers. With his current contract situation he's the one holding the cards. It would be crazy if he wasn't asking for such wages.

This guy has been spot on with Onana and Hojlund tbh.
He still has some misses given how far in advance he reports some of the links just like Santi Aouna. We're best off remaining cautious with him until the more reliable journalists start reporting on this.

If we land Amrabat and sell the likes of Donny , Maguire, Fred or Mctominay as well as what we have already signed. I would say that is a very good transfer window. Yes we still need more but we are definitely going in the right direction

It already is a very good transfer window in my opinion

Just for those complaining about over paying, we’ve spent what, £150m so far this summer? For that we’ve got mount, onana and hojlund.

Previously that’s bought us a Maguire, AWB and a Dan James.

Money fairly well spent when looked in that context (although I always liked James and quite like AWB)
