When we could have got him on a free last year I’m not sure it is.
The negativity over here sometimes amazes me. We are most probably signing a first choice GK of Inter for under 50m. If performs well as our first choice GK for the next 4-5 years, it would be a great deal. Of course you never know and it is a risk as is any transfer. But I mean using your logic should we complain about Rio transfer for 30m when we could have gotten him for 18m from West Ham before? Or not getting Vidic directly from Serbia more cheaply than 7m that we paid Spartak etc.

He was available on a free when we did not even have a permanent manager and did not know who would be the next one. He was on the back of a ban. Was a lot more risk than now after performing well after a ban at a much higher stage.

How hard would it have been to discuss transfer targets before the manager joined? It’s not very difficult. He tried to sign a few goalies last summer as well. I’m not negative about the player but find it daft that we could have signed him on a free last summer and now he’s potentially costing £50m. This is why we are so far behind other clubs because we don’t act smart in the transfer window. With the budget we have every summer, player turnover should be much quicker.

Yes and if all good players in the world were from our academy, we wouldn't have to pay any transfer fees ever.

It is not hard to approach the player - but how probable is that he would have chosen us vs Inter when we were not going to be in CL next year, in total disarray and who knows if he is wanted by the next manager. Plus, we had DDG under contract still - and I do not remember anyone clamoring to replace DDG immediately at the time. And with his salary DDG would have been had to shift so I am not sure we could have promised Onana definite first choice role.

i mean there is no debate that our transfer policy has not been good and we missed a lot of good deals, were not proactive etc but in this particular case I do not see much reason to whine honestly

100% right.

Some people would moan if they had nothing to moan about.

£43m for Onana is good business

It doesn't sound excessive but then again he'd be the fourth most expensive goalie ever at that price (from memory). For a player one season in a major league.

Given we're desperate it could have been worse tbf.

Come on man

Liverpool bought Alison for 67m after one season in Roma (before that he was in Brazil). City bought Ederson for 35m from Portugal - inflation adjusted at least as much and so on. It would actually be quite hard to find a significantly better deal (ex ante without hindsight of course) when you consider all relevant factors such as (a) keeper profile with experience in CL clubs and major league (b) inflation adjusted (!) fee - sure top keepers went for 20m 20 yrs ago but this is not relevant any more - and (c) contract situation - sure Real got Courtois on a relative cheap of 35m but he had no intention of extending his contact which was due to expire next year.

In other words try to find a transfer where a keeper of a good age and at least as much recent experience as Onana at the same level (at least 1 season first choice at a CL club in a major league) with a long-term contract with a current club was bought significantly cheaper (adjusted for inflation).

Exactly.

This whole, let’s loan him so that he can face backlash with another fanbase is nonsense imo. If he were a lesser player he’d be gone.
No its not nonsense, its a difficult salvage job on a talent the club had high hopes for. Guess the plan is for him to go abroad, get him to play whilst managing the optics for a season and hope that either people forget what he has been accused of or another club gives us a biggish fee for him. In this FFP era you can't be throwing away generational talent over optics, the club needs him to either play for us or generate a decent fee.

People are blaming the ones currently running things, when a lot of it is down to Woodward and previous managers who couldn't recognise a dud when they see it so campaigned for unworthy players to get new contracts.

If we are able to sign Hojlund I feel like we're good on forwards unless it's another striker to replace Martial. Him being injured all the time is one of the primary reasons we need to shuffle up front.

Well, that and the fact he's crap

Onana was excellent for Ajax. The Eredivisie is a major league. Kepa cost almost double this, it's a good deal. I doubt we'd get any better keeper for less than £70m

Mount, Onana, probably Hojlund, then sit back and make sales to see what's left for Kane :muppetland:

The thing is if we could sell Martial for £20m, McTom for £25-30m, Maguire for £30m and Fred for £20m that is most of the money for Kane. And I feel I'm low balling some of those prices too.

Prices you quoted are maybe possible for McTominay and Fred, but for the other too those are unrealistic

Low balling? Really? If anything you're being too optimistic. Nobody is every going to pay £20m for Martial, not with his wages and injury record.

Best we can hope for is an Italian club offering a loan deal, where they pay half his wages and have an option to buy for something like £10m. Which would be pointless to accept, let's be honest.

Martial and Maguire are not getting sold. Wages too high. West Ham might be dumb enough to buy Maguire, cause they’re loaded right now but Martial couldn’t even hack a loan move. He’s done as a footballer in top leagues.

Martial will be released at the end of his deal fetching zero money. Useless player.

Others we have a chance to sell but we will probably take a £5m haircut on all of them knowing this club.

5m for Martial
25m for McT
15 for Maguire

If we were really lucky.

Trouble is the loan to Savilla didn't exactly go well, if anything it put everyone off him that was interested that January.

Yeah, did seen that way...think we're stuck with him for the duration of his contract, to be honest.

Hopefully he‘ll stay fit for a decent run of games and score 8 goals or so before January. Then we could get a decent fee for him.

Our best chance at getting rid of Martial is Saudi Arabia. My bet is he‘s injured before the season starts, thus scuppering any chance of a move.

WH aren’t loaded if you read the posts by some of their fans. The rice money will mostly go towards paying off FFP stuff to get themselves right for next year

Fecks sake.

These mid table English clubs should seriously consider Maguire instead of getting some random CB from France who flops spectacularly. He’s shite for us but you just know he’ll be rock for mediocre teams whom often park the bus. But no, they want the shiny new hyped Argentine.
