I'm sure most people on this forum, as its an enthusiast forum, have been watching football long enough not to put to much weight on preseason showings. I am not disputing the kids have potential and looked good on tour, but to argue that we are better off attacking wise going into the next season, even if we sell Lukaku, just because the kids looked good in preseason is an entirely different thing, one I don't subscribe to.

No. I think people were just hoping that if we sell Lukaku the money will be reinvested. It now looks we either sell and goodness knows what will happen with the money, or he stays and Ole is stuck with a player who has had no pre-season at all, does not want to be here and Ole does not want him either.
I don't know if you're being serious, through no fault of your own, but I am too. If we have learned nothing else from the last 6 years of mediocrity aside from the fact that pursuing galacticos isn't a good way to build a team, then I'll admit that Woody deserves an ounce more credit than I give him. We have to rediscover our penchant for finding gems before they cost an arm and a leg and have uncontrollable egos.

Yeah let's wait and see as far as our defence goes. Just because we paid a record fee for Maguire doesn't mean he'll perform to that level. He had a pretty shit season by all accounts. Also not getting anyone in for CM when we were in need for reinforcement there even before Herrera and Fellaini left is outrageous. We need a midfielder of high quality to replace the loss of Herrera and fellani. Periera is not that man and if we believe he is, then I’ll be entirely pissed off by our lack of ambition to improve. We already needed better players before them two left and Matic is a year older but we put all our hopes on a young unproven erratic player who doesn’t look like he has what it takes.

I'm not arguing that we're better off, I'm just taking issue with you saying that the kids are no better than they were last year. You only have to see what these same kids were producing last year and compare it to this year's efforts.
They are seen as much more part of the squad than they ever were under Jose. They have been played the whole way through preseason and have been getting serious and consistent minutes on par with the other squad players like Smalling, Jones, Mata, et al.
For what its worth, I agree that it's a massive risk putting them in right now, but there's no use crying and gnashing your teeth over it. Support the team through the season. That's what we're here for. I'd rather look at this season as a season where the likes of Greenwood and Gomes have the opportunities to really establish themselves, than to complain over what could have been with missed signings.
I also think its readily apparent that Ole knows where the issues are, but he's constrained by a board who don't seem to realise the damage they are causing to the team by their ignorance of the sporting aspect of running the club.
It's not over yet. We've added two quality players and a potentially quality one who will need a few years.
People foolishly thought we'd sign 5/6 world class players this summer. This isn't FIFA. This is how it is. The rebuild is going to take a few windows whether you like it or not.

That is one low bar. Tbf, we were never going to address all our flaws in one window but going into the season with Matic our only specialist DM is just begging to fail. He's totally finished at a high level.
I didn’t expect everything to be fixed with one window but I can’t believe we’ll start the season with our current midfield. It was already short of quality then we lost Fellaini and Herrera and Matic legs have gone.

I think we've got one more signing to come. Probably a creative midfielder to help Pogba. And no its not Bruno fecking Fernandes.
Defence has become immensely better no doubt.
But midfield has lost Herera and Fellaini. Only player drafted in is Mc Tominay which is a gamble at best. Matic has regressed significantly so overall our midfield is much weaker than the midfield that got us 6th last year.
Attacking wise, Lukaku likely to be sold. No RW bought and a championship winger brought in. All hopes on Rashford and Martial. This is a big gamble again and our attack is worse than last year due to it.
We are spending max £150 mil, or most likely £70 mil after Lukaku sale. We have the highest revenue in the world, considering that and the position we are in, it is pathetic. £250 mil should have been the spend this year to get us back to challenging.
If Kak goes we have to replace him, in my opinion. We can't rely on Rashy / Marty.
You do know that the method you're advocating is the precise reason why we're currently in this mess, don't you? Managers coming in and making wholesale changes, and leaving a mish mash of mangled players and playing styles which result in an unmitigated disaster scene of a squad.
Ole knows where the issues are, but is constrained by a clueless board. In those circumstances to potentially fix what was our single biggest area of the squad is a considerable step forward. Ideally he would have liked a midfielder (Longstaff) as well, but it didn't happen. We'll likely bring him in next summer once Newcastle have been relegated.
You can tell by the profile of target he's going for that we're not setting ourselves up for immediate success, but gradual and incremental progression. He's growing a team together that will hopefully form the backbone of a successful team in the years, and potentially decade ahead.
Say what you want, but Ole's doing it the right way. He just needs the patience and forethought of the board and the fans. He has definitely got it from the latter (well, the ones that matter - who go to the games and put in the miles following the team week in and week out), I just hope he has it from the former.

Supposedly we’re one of the biggest/wealthiest clubs in the world, Yet we need at least a cm and a cdm, we need a winger, and an attacker... but it looks like the glazers are going to pocket Roms money, also saved on Herrera’s wages, Afro man’s wages, and let’s not forget, Ole is not an expensive manager either..
We going from one rebuild to another. We have been in rebuild for a decade now and most players acquired during this phase have already gone. This is no excuse for an underwhelming window once again.
All those renewals pointed to the reality that there wouldn't be much investment in the attack or midfield.

Last summer was atrocious but at least it came off the back of a 2nd place finish.
We just had a dreadful season where we finished 6th - a significant rebuild was absolutely necessary.

Exactly. Even if we don't make the top 10 this season, at least it'll be interesting. I've given up hope of European football for next season now, and I look forward to the season with the youngsters trying their best to compensate for our dramatic under-investment.
