We going from one rebuild to another. We have been in rebuild for a decade now and most players acquired during this phase have already gone. This is no excuse for an underwhelming window once again.

The fact we've gone from rebuild to rebuild doesn't mean we skip the next one.

We've spent £147m net so far. The most in the league. Probably got another deal left too.

You fair weather fans are never happy. The team is improving. We've got some brilliant young players too but you'd not be interested in them because they aren't fancy dan signings

You do know that the method you're advocating is the precise reason why we're currently in this mess, don't you? Managers coming in and making wholesale changes, and leaving a mish mash of mangled players and playing styles which result in an unmitigated disaster scene of a squad.

Ole knows where the issues are, but is constrained by a clueless board. In those circumstances to potentially fix what was our single biggest area of the squad is a considerable step forward. Ideally he would have liked a midfielder (Longstaff) as well, but it didn't happen. We'll likely bring him in next summer once Newcastle have been relegated.

You can tell by the profile of target he's going for that we're not setting ourselves up for immediate success, but gradual and incremental progression. He's growing a team together that will hopefully form the backbone of a successful team in the years, and potentially decade ahead.

Say what you want, but Ole's doing it the right way. He just needs the patience and forethought of the board and the fans. He has definitely got it from the latter (well, the ones that matter - who go to the games and put in the miles following the team week in and week out), I just hope he has it from the former.

I may be totally wrong here, but hasnt it really only been players in/outs wise at least Van Gaal that made wholesale changes? I agree philosophy and playing style wise every manager has tried to make compelte changes and all of them so far bar Ole maybe, completely against the grain of what ost of us want to see. But paler wise at least apart from Van Gaal isnt Mourinhos first window the only one we have made four signings and maybe just as I want it, cant remember any windows a lot of players have been shown the door either?

I think the Evra interview makes it clear that extensions fall under Woodward's purview. He never mentioned the manager being involved about it.

I think what happens is Woodward's default action is to just renew contracts unless the manager has a strong view otherwise.
LVG was the manager then who was still Netherlands boss so he actually wasn't the official manager even. Giggs still was and is why he mentioned Giggs in the story. So of course Woodward would decide then. Otherwise, for the most part we extend if the manager is fine with it.

When does this supposed 'rebuild' end? It's not a rebuild when you're aimlessly throwing cash and penny pinching when there are players in positions we generally could use. The lack of a CM signing is a fecking travesty. We lost two ffs. An injury to Pogba and we genuinely have no creative midfielder in the team.

With Upamecano, Tierney + Bellerin and Holding back to go with what is arguably the best attack in the league, yes they’d be in a better position than us and Chelsea quite easily. And maybe on par w Spurs and Tottenham and Poch’s boys

So far you’ve listed a two awful defenders and two defenders who would be new to the league and very unproven.

Arsenal have a decent attack but their midfield is appalling.

He isn't managing Molde anymore mate. He's managing what he feels to be the biggest club in world football - this is pressure like nothing else he has or ever will experience. Once he starts dropping points, what do you think he's going to do? Throw the kids in the deep end to potentially have their confidence broken or revert to the usual bullshit of Young, Mata, Lingard, Matic etc and hope and pray that they do just enough to keep his head above water? Some fans are in for a rude awakening this season. Ole is a football manager. He will look after his own best interests and rely on what he's familiar with when the shit hits the fan. And believe me, that fan is getting hit HARD at some point this season.

As I said, everything he has done points to him using youth. That's what he is familiar with. You might know him better than I do (at least you try to make the impression in your post that you have a lot of insights into his personality), but going from his history so far and what he says, I'd bet on him to bed in some of the youngsters.

We weren’t beat by spurs to the signings of Ndombele or Lo Celso. We were never in for him. Doesn’t matter if they were potential buys. Everyone is a potential buy. They also haven’t even signed Lo Celso yet.

And neither Lo Celso or Ndombele have kicked a ball in the premier league. They may be brilliant, average or a complete flop.

Okay, we'll see I guess. I highly doubt it personally - we'll see 15mins here and there but I'm expecting Mata, Lingard and co to start the bulk of league games and crucial cup games again.

Spend a fortune on a player that will be likely wanting to go in a year again. It would be another expensive mistake for another mercenary.

Even if that happened at least we would still get the money back on him compared to most of the average dross we have brought in, in this day and age can you really go wrong with buying real world class players in their prime with so much money floating around in football and inflated transfer prices?

In terms of the size of the club we are and where we were as a club last season, we really should be spending more and getting more players than those around us though.

I dont see how you can say the team is improving, the season hasnt even started so we can only go off of the last one and bar a magical two onths where everything went right, it was one of the worst seasons we have had we were an absolute shambles the last few months, how is that improving?

I do agree with one more good signing (hopefully in midfield) you would have to say it is a pretty good window and also agree we have three very promising young players so it isnt all doom and gloom.

Personally my frustration isnt more with the number of players that have been given new contracts or others that are still here , that just are not good enough. Do think a big effort should have been made to get them ot early in the window and that may have alllowed another deal or two on top of what we have done, which would have been a great window.

Dont think it is all doom and gloom though, think only Mourinhos first window quality players were bought in and I think this window already is pretty siilar and the defence was the most important part to rebuild, but I do think we are still some way short of where we need to be in certain areas with a lot of mediocrity that a lot of fans seem to have a lot of faith in, though improved I am still far from conviced curently at least the likes of Lindelof ,McTominay and Martial for example are proper starting eleven players for us and though it is a really strong league currently, being 50/50 in confidence of the top four isnt how we should be feeling as fans, we have been spoilt under Ferguson but we dont want to be the next Liverpool/Milan of a great club slipping for 15-20years

With those two albeit unlikely signings, their defense would make relatively similar strides forward like we have this summer. Sure they might not be as good as us defensively but they would be much improved if healthy, and possibly with more depth at fullback.

If say Bellerin and Tierney could bomb forward with better coverage like Upamecano behind them, they’d be able to spread the pitch quite well. I have my doubts of either of our fullbacks contributing much up the pitch, even if we will be quite tight defensively.

Exactly. Even if we don't make the top 10 this season, at least it'll be interesting. I've given up hope of European football for next season now, and I look forward to the season with the youngsters trying their best to compensate for our dramatic under-investment.
If we play Gomes and greenwood regularly and give minutes to chong and garner as well most people will agree with you but that is not going to happen. We are going to play the tried and tested dross we have.

This is exactly what we should be doing. It's going to become apparent pretty quickly that we aren't going to be in the mix in the top 3/4 in the league this year, so lets just take the pressure off a bit, play the kids and try to make the season fun, rather than a long, dreary slog.

Hopefully Solskjaer takes this approach rather than sticking with dross like Lingard.

If he doesn’t and Lampard does, then we definitely risk falling behind Chelsea next season when they’re free to buy again. Whichever manager has the security to know he can play youth and get a pass, will likely get a step on the other going into next summer.

One minute we are being told that we are done with our business this window & now we are being told that we are hoping to add one more player. Shows you that the journos don’t have a clue and are just simply guessing.

Personally hope it is the latter and we do bring in a player (has to be a midfielder) but not going to get my hopes up too high expecting it.

So lads, who do we believe... Hirst and Sky Sports who have said we're done, or do we believe The Athletic, who say we need one more.
Need to know whether to keep the muppet in me going.

At least one isn't right, we need at least 3. CM, RW and CF.

If Pogba goes then we need 2 CM.

i think the RW wont happen, 100%. I agree with a midfielder and a striker/central forward though, especially since Lukaku wont be here for much longer i guess.

I'd go with Hirst, although it depends who from The Atheltic have reported that bit of news, if it was Ornstein then it'll have substance.

Believe the manager who said we are working on some cases after the Milan game, by which time everyone knew Maguire was done (so that excludes him from those cases in question). Whether anything materializes and we sign anyone remains to be seen, but don't take anything any journo says as gospel.

not sure, personally i dont see us going for one, unless we have a target in mind. Dybala and Bruno arent happening, so unless we are working on someone behind the scenes, this looks done to me.

I feel for Ole, he's been hung out to dry basically. Two first 11 signings made when 5 were needed. There's no way we're signing anyone else, even if we wanted to - not enough time, we move like treacle in the transfer market.

We aren’t signing 3 players in 3 days mate. I’d be amazed if we got one more.

Oh I know mate, but what I mean is, we need 3 signings, I know we're not getting them. I would be surprised if we make 1 more signing IMO. I have little to no faith in how we conduct our business and it's no fault of OGS.

Just want to point out that Hirst didn't write in his article today that United were done. Despite James Cooper thinking we're unlikely to sign anybody else Sky haven't ran with the story yet so who knows. Guess it's still up in the air and there's always a chance...

This defeatism baffles me. Very close to being top 4 last year and now with clear extra strength in defence and Rashford, Martial and McTominay a year older.

You'd think that Ole would recognise that with the midfield we have, and having lost Herrera and Fellaini, we need to strengthen. If we have any injuries, which lets face it, they're almost certain to happen, we're kinda screwed.
