Or just play him as a number 10, consistently, where he’s best. Why sign a player then immediately go play him out of position?

His position on the formation board doesn't mean he stays there constantly. We've already seen in pre season that we have started to integrate a fluid attacking system. Dybala would just be a part of that rotating the positions he takes up.

That's a bit unfair to be honest, I mean even Sam Lee, who is City's mouthpiece was talking about that deal for weeks. Maybe it was Bruno's agent feeding the journos the story or maybe City decided not to pursue him. Di Marzio has gotten more right than any other Journo in England, I mean just look at his updates regarding Pepe. I'm not saying he's right here but that Bruno to City transfer shouldn't be used as a yard stick

It was the former, as was reported elsewhere at the time.

If United and Leicester had agreed a deal to make Maguire the most expensive defender of all time, news of that would spread like wildfire. And yet, here we are a day later, nobody is reporting it and instead we're reading that we're still some way apart on the fee.

Amoyal has no idea what's happening with Maguire (and I doubt a US-based ESPN hack would be first to hear about any deal involving him either).
Di Marzio was the one who reported it yesterday first, Romano had also said earlier in the day that Maguire is pushing Leicester. Now while no source is 100% correct, both of them are pretty decent sources when it comes to transfer news. Its not inconceivable a deal has been agreed and we are waiting for Leicester to finalize their replacement first, before the news spreads like wildfire.

Ignoring Herrera's departure and the gaping hole that is our RW to sign another left winger and another couple of 10's feels like something we'd do to be honest.
Well it's Sancho next year for our RW, at lest that seems to be the plan. And since we will be spending 100 mill plus on him, no point buying another player for 50,60 million for hi to be just a backup when we already have Mata and Lingard who could be backup RW. This is what the club is thinking if you ask me. Do I agree? No, but I see the logic in it. Let's hope that Bruno can contribute some goals.
But agree about CM, we need to sign a #8 and #6, don't think Fred and McT are going to be enough, but Woody is incapable of signing 5+ players in a window

Not inconceivable, no, but pretty unlikely that a Sky Italia reporter knew about it when, 24 hours later, the rest of the world (including local reporters in Leicester and Manchester) have no idea anything has happened.

Again, this doesn't mean we won't sign Maguire, it just means we haven't done it yet.

It's also important to note that the journos in the UK abide by strict ethical guidelines in terms of these things. They also want to keep clubs on their good side, and so definitely wouldn't leak details. Foreign journos don't require the same commitment. They hear things, they let followers know.

Fair enough. But I'd like to point out that journos who have a direct line to the club, like Stone or Peach in our case, often report what the club wants them to. Even with AWB they reported that deal was not agreed when pretty much every source was claiming its done. They confirmed it probably when all the fine details had been hashed out. I mean there is still a way to go from deal agreed in principle to crossing every t and dotting every i.

Pretty much this.

We can I am not disputing it, but it would be totally moronic thing to do. One thing is to sell Darmian/Rojo when the season starts, the other thing is selling your best player.

He's arguably our most talented player, but he's not our best player. He often doesn't do the donkey work like tracking runners, and he has clearly downed tools a few times too. It'll only get worse if we keep him against his will.

It'll be moronic to keep him if he doesn't want to be here and creates problems.

Apart from when he did.

Still, with the vast majority of other clubs, when we hear "deal is close", deal is actually being closed within days or hours sometimes. Why to think that in case of Man Utd in particular, same type of news are definitely and inevitably a pile of shite? It simply can't be that way

The bigger the club, the more the name sells and hence more the rumors. Its not only Utd, we see this with the likes of Real and Barca as well.

The UK journos don't like DiMarzio because he doesn't have to follow the same rules:

Maguire trained today with Leicester, according to the BBC.

How could that possibly have happened if we'd signed him yesterday (as Amoyal & Di Marzio claim).

BBC also reporting that Leicester are asking for £90m, which United find to be "unrealistic".

No deal done.

But it may also be true at the same time, as we indeed need such players and reportedly are considering them.

We lost 2 mf's without replacing them, we could do with more depth in quality. Pogba's not exactly one dimensional either, he can play anywhere in mf to a decent standard.

I can't disagree too much, but I would have thought that the club would prioritize replacements for Herrera and Matic, rather than extra competition for Pogba (unless of course we are planning to sell Pogba...)

Why would he not train if it hasn't been announced yet? Until he is officially a Utd player he'll do what Leicester ask him to, but that doesn't exclude the possibility of a deal not being agreed.

Anyway there is no way to know who is right at this point. Maybe after (if) we've completed the deal, more details will emerge.

Strict ethical guidelines? I'm sorry you what now? Outside of a few journos there's about as much ethical guidelines in English journalism as there's in a random genocide.

I'm sorry but I don't understand your point mate. What are you trying to say?

I am trying to say that it may very well be that we are indeed signing them.
Signing who? When you quoted me initially I was talking about Maguire (whom I've already stated I believe we will sign). I didn't talk about signing anyone else.

This surely can't be true. Why would Sporting Lisbon risk an injury just so he can play essentially a friendly. We aren't interested otherwise the deal would have been done by now.

Only in England is the "Super Cup" played and treated, because it is set up rules wise, as a glorified friendly. In every other county, as well as the European Super Cup, it is a legitimate competitive game and a trophy to be won. And so it should be.

Germans hate it. They didn't even have it for the longest time. Italians don't really care about it either.

I think La Liga just moved it to another continent and changed it to a silly "final 4" type of competition

You don't agree a world record deal for a player and then allow him to train with his former club - imagine if he'd done his ACL!

If any deal had been agreed, Maguire would have been pulled from training (probably for some nonsense reason like an 'upset stomach', which was probably what led Di Marzio to publish a story yesterday saying a deal was done - he was guessing based on Maguire's absence and hoping to nail an "exclusive" and restore some of his reputation).

Incidentally, I see Pogba missed training today because of a mysterious "back problem"... :nervous:
