If that's true, then why didn't they quote a bigger fee? Like say 100 million or 120 million which is apparently his release clause? IIRC the reports were from top journos and were very conclusive with loads of details as to how the deal deal was structured, about other players being involved in the deal about Sporting and City looking to have a partnership of some sort... loads of stuff like that. I find it hard to believe that they made it all up just to sell a player for barely market average

They presumably knew that if they quoted too high a price, it would scare off buyers rather than attract them.

It is usually our name that gets thrown around to make a market for players like this (see Gaitan) - but in this case, it was City.

Castles said that there had been some interest in Fernandes from 2nd tier clubs in Italy and that he might end up there.

No surprise here, I never thought he looked like a Pep type of player, the Portguese media using the two Manchester clubs names to drive a story, I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn up at Wolves or Everton next season, Joao Felix is the real one to get from Portugal.

Absolutely agreed on this, he is the gem.

Goes to show how many of these "sources" are bullshit, even when they are an actual club like Sporting.

To be fair to the journalists in question, it probably is quite hard to know when you are being told the truth or when you are being fed disinformation/a pack of lies, especially when the sources are probably similar/the same.

Agree, this always needs to be taken into account.

I'd actually cut them some slack, but given the quality of what passes for football journalism, I don't feel like it.
They have it too easy, poor/pointless/uninteresting questions during the conferences, coupled with not even fact checking the intel they get.
I actually find it shocking that better people don't make it to the fore of football journalism.

They simply don’t need him with Foden already struggling to get games as it is.

Can’t say I’m much of an expert on the Portuguese league. What is Fernandes style of play? If someone was to compare him with another player who is it?

Duncan Castles said on his podcast on Monday that all the info re City interest in the player was coming from Sporting, and that it was likely just the club trying to make a market for a player they have decided to sell.

He also said that Fernandes is not good enough to play at an elite level club.

Fed a load of duff info by the people at Sporting.

So more than good enough for us.

Ugh, so much for Ole the ruthless, Lukaku is a waste of time, simply nowhere near good enough of a footballer, and the club are deluded if they think they will recoup their money as they massively overpaid for him, he wouldn't get a game for any of the other teams in the stop 6.

Have you ever sold something?

Rather spend 80m on Richarlison than Dybala. Would be a huge coup .
