Completely agree. I was sold on him after we faced anderlecht in the EL. The fact we apparently aren't even interested is frankly depressing. He would probably cost around 40m and was very impressive for leicester last season. Then some on here wonder why others (myself included) bemoan targeting the likes of longstaff.
Probably because you haven't a clue how good Longstaff could be? I'd say that's it.

What a depressing mess this transfer window and this thread is becoming. All of the signing that could have made the difference next season now seem out of reach. We are potentially looking at a window of James, Longstaff, MaGuire and AWB. I'd feel physically sick at the direction of this great club if that transpires to be true.

Anyone who gets physically sick at the prospect of signing Daniel James and AWB really don't understand football (or possibly should see a doctor as soon as possible)

I wasn't too sure what yours was until your last post. Likewise, naturally I've not watched as much of AWB as Utd players. My point is that he looks incredibly limited to me, my idea of a modern fullback is one who can contribute offensively and defensively equally effectively however as I mentioned, when watching him I saw a hell of a lot of slide tackles and not much else.

Really don't want to derail the thread, I'll keep it short. I get what you're saying but I also see a young, rapid, strong player, excellent in the tackle and playing more defensively in a setup that isn't so much designed for him to bomb on. I have liked how he is with the ball at his feet, he looks like he can dribble and take players on, with more freedom this could well blossom. He's very young and immediately gives us a boost on that side. I think he'll be a fantastic full back, personally. Didn't know until the other day that he used to be a winger, didn't overly surprise me because like I said, he looks comfortable with the ball and even has a trick or two in him.

Is there anything wrong with trying to have some strong British players in the squad? It's mandatory anyway and the only obscene suggestion seems to be Macguire, with most reports repeating what we are saying here, that the fee is too much. We still linked with Bruno and a few other quality foreign players. The only issue seems to be RW, which has gone silent since it was clear we weren't going to get Sancho, but then again can any of us even think of a suitable interim winger?

Oh so you rate AWB, I prefer Ethan Laird, a player whose united career will probably be over if we make that signing.

City paid £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian who never played in Europe let alone the Premier League.

Sometimes you have to take the risk on players who are seen to be high potential talents capable of playing for top clubs.

The very big difference is G.Jesus was already touted at becoming one of the world's best. I think he already had his Brazil debut as well when they signed him. We are targeting/signing turds just because they are young AND British. Wan Bissaka looks like a good buy because he young, replaces a crap player in our first 11 AND most importantly shown he can do it at the top level.

How is Langstaff, Maguire and James going to get us near the top 4 next season whilst potentially losing our 3 best players? Pure delusion amongst the Cafe at the moment.

So Longstaff is a turd?

For Manchester fecking United, 100% yes. Injured, 9 first team appearances for Newcastle. Sounds a bargain at £25m to me. Some of you have forgetten what this club is.

Real Madrid sign Hazard, Mendy and Jovic in a week and we are sat here with a Championship LW we didn't even need.

It's crazy right. As for a British core we have Rashford and McTominay as first teamers then Gomes, Garner, Greenwood are a being eased into the team. This summers signings James and soon AWB. Right now we need players who are ready to perform.

Arsenal have a small budget and Chelsea lost one of the best players in the world and have a transfer ban in place. Most teams with our resources would take this chance to make a significant gap between us and those 2 clubs. But look at us as we somehow find a way to be worse than them 2.

Do you really believe this?

Sure, they are so much better than our lot but you believe this?

When Carrick and Rio were at Westham did you think they were rubbish too? Probably.

Robertson at Hull? Winjaldum at Newcastle? Both relegated to Championship. Can't be good enough for Liverpool surely?

You can't judge a player on who they play for.

I think the point is that Real Madrid seemed to have planned for the summer all season. What have we been doing in comparison? We've failed to appoint a Director of Football. We're being linked with Maguire for a crazy fee, meanwhile there are tons of better, cheaper options. We still have a gaping hole on our right wing. We seemingly can't sell players. We waited too long to offer a contract to one of our best players, and he's left on a free to a rival. And we have a manager, coaching staff with about 4 years' management experience between them.

I know we still have time, and I'm still hopeful we'll make the right signings to launch a title charge next season, but you can see why many fans are confused/angry about what's happening.

We can no longer wait for players to have their breakthrough year or two before signing. Look at guys like Maguire/Rice. Get them 2/3 years ago, the fee is 20m. Get them now, the fee is 80m. I've got several Newcastle supporting mates who think Longstaff is their team's best player.

You mean same those 3 best players who got us into top 4 with ease, while they played fantastic football and giving their best? Those best 3 players?

By not plugging the holes we have in the squad adequately. I am not even talking about these big name players like Ndombele and de ligt that everyone clamours for. I would have no issue with a signing like Maddison if we are to play with a 10 because he has shown his ability over a couple of seasons. Those kinds. Longstaff just like James should be a longterm project who arrives as a squad player not someone seen as a possible starter from the get go. Our transfer strategy is starting to look like something from fifa at this point.

Look, they might surprise us, Ole might surprise us. If they don't then somebody will pay, probably Ole as the club will say they got the players Ole asked for.

Did they not bring them in line?
Or did I make that up?

English window closes 5pm on 8th August, the rest closes on September 2nd. But we did get to open ours earlier 16/5 as opposed to 11/6 - for all the good that did.

This 100%.

Pretty much

Surely wait until the end of the window to say that. Nobody with any reliability has linked us to Longstaff, just the Mirror. Even Sky who started the whole thing say we aren't in for him.

£25m in today's market isn't expensive. We never had a galactico model to Real, that was always the case. A lot of the talent we bought were ones with heavy potential. If you want pure Galactico's maybe you should support "Real fecking Madrid" instead.

80m would be worth it IMO if it put us back into contention. If we need to upgrade him, then it'll be the time when his contract is up or he's in the wrong side of 30. We can either not extend him or sell him to another club.
We gotta stop thinking about resale value

I'm not thinking resale value, I'm thinking the ruthlessness of the club to move on in say 2 or 3 years from someone they've spent 80M on

I think he's still gonna be an asset 2-3 years from now. But I very much doubt that we have become so good in 2-3 years that Maguire become a liability.
If by the off chance United has become much better and need to move on from Maguire, we can still sell him for a decent price. He's still 28-29 after all.

Ferdinand was clearly one of the best CB in the Premier League when we signed him. Carrick wasn’t appreciated by most fans until he came to retirement.

As for the other two, they have a world class manager in charge of them, we don’t.

Ferdinand took Leeds to a Champions League semifinal. I agree with your original point, but Rio is the wrong example

I don't think Maguire is good enough to challenge for the CL as a starting CB. My worry is that if we progress in the next 2 or 3 years, the club won't want to replace their 80M CB in order to push on even further. Anyways enough for the tweets thread, can carry this on in the Maguire thread if you like?
