Every player United sign or want to sign will be overpriced. That’s the cost of failing to make the CL. Other teams are more attractive so that means United have to pay top dollar. It’s just the way it is. Thing is, United don’t have to sign these players but they can’t complain if they go to other teams for a bit less than what United are quoted.

It's the Fifa/football manager mentality that has gripped so many people these days.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest of suggesting Maguire is only marginally better than Smalling is pretty much based on one being rated 82 and the other being rated 81 on Fifa.

I struggle to believe that many people have watched both players an equal amount and have then also watched AWB for the same as well as all the other players being discussed.

Basically, most people just talk for the sake of being in the discussion.
I've seen quite a bit of AWB, his season's highlights is 100 slide tackles in his own defensive 3rd leading to opposition throw-ins. Impressive.

If he was called Longstaffio and was 25 million from Real Betis, many of the people who are objecting would have their dicks out over this transfer.

Weird mentality that it isn’t possible to pick up quality young players from lower mid table clubs.

Not really, watching us week in week out against most clubs you will find players who would do better than the ones we have. This may be a good approach for a strong team that is challenging and at the top tier but we are at our lowest since the early 80s. We need an influx of top talent, not people who may come good in a year or two. I'm not confident we will get any WC additions and the club will contunue to flounder and make it even more difficult to sign top players and get Ed his tasty sponsors in the future.

He is a tier 1 ITK guru apparently.
He should probably get a mention in the first post for the ITK thread.. Still a reddit ITK.. He probably got something right in the past.. A lot of people who constantly spew shit get something right at some time.

Anyway.. he hasnt said anything new or verifiable. If it happens.. he'll pretend to have inside information.. If he is wrong.. he'll say everyone in the media said we were interested.. we clearly were and Big Bad Woodward fecked it up.

There is a thread of crap like that.. and its not this one..

I 100% agree.

We'll know if there's any truth in this if Pogba starts against Chelsea on the first day of the season.

So the international window closes end of August and ours the 8th. No way we let anyone go after that date or we are truly run by stupid people. I think he will ask for a transfer just before he is due back to training.

My only problem with this, is if we'll be willing to upgrade on him when we're in a better position.

The position the club is in at the moment isn't going to allow us to attract the MDL or Varane types, but if Maguire helps us get back to challenging, are we really going to dump him to upgrade to someone who gets us winning instead of challenging.
80m would be worth it IMO if it put us back into contention. If we need to upgrade him, then it'll be the time when his contract is up or he's in the wrong side of 30. We can either not extend him or sell him to another club.
We gotta stop thinking about resale value

I like the fact we're in for these young hungry and motivated English players.

It builds a core of a team. Then we can start pebbledashing it with proven stars next summer.

Unless we have an alternative already signed up and are playing chicken with Madrid/Juve to get the best deal possible.

The most moronic post of the day goes to.. are you Sam Allardyce/Niel Warnock by any chance?

25m for a player entirely unproven, who will be one of out '5 or 6' signings when we have a squad screaming out for ready made quality. Suggesting longstaff is a good signing is blind faith and nothing more.

No need to insult me. I didn’t say whether or not he’d be a good signing. I said the mentality that you can’t pick up quality players from lower mid table clubs is odd. People seem to get excited about players with foreign names who they’ve never seen play. I do too.

If he does then he does, we've survived bigger losses and been fine. I just hope we throw big money at someone to replace him or get some decent players from Juventus in return. Squad depth is my biggest concern at the moment.

And I'm not suggesting people haven't seen him or much of him and there will be people who likely watched multiples teams in different leagues upwards of 20 times each, meaning they can put together a more informed opinion or comparison but I don't believe it will be many.

I'll use me as an example, I probably watched Leicester about 6 times last season, Palace 3 or 4. I don't include things like motd because it doesn't really give you all that much. Now if I'm going to compare Maguire, a player I probabaly watched in 8 or so games, including England, with a United player, who I watched every minute of, including pre season, I'm not really going to draw a fair comparison.

Sorry, what's your point?

Hopefully but I doubt something so concrete and certain would not be leaked. I'm sure Juve and Real, two super clubs would know if we had a top class replacement in the bag. Obviously getting the best deal is a priority but I cannot see how either can afford him straight cash.

Mine also, goals is a big worry also. Lukaku does look like he wants out and if Pogba goes also thats 30-40 goals plus 15-20 assists a season gone at in one go.

City paid £30m for a 19 year old Brazilian who never played in Europe let alone the Premier League.

Sometimes you have to take the risk on players who are seen to be high potential talents capable of playing for top clubs.
I see the point you’re trying to make, but Jesus had been capped 6 times and scored 5 times with Brazil the season before he was signed, whilst also leading his domestic team Palmerias to their first title win since 1994, culminating with him being voted the leagues player of the year.

Diogo Dalot (who is two years Longstaff’s junior) is probably a better comparison, he played 6 times for Porto before we signed him. And he has yet to show himself as anything more than a prospect.

At 21, there are other players out there more experienced than Longstaff who I think we’d do better targeting. Price shouldn’t really be that big of an issue, unless we’re talking seriously audacious fees.

I wasn't too sure what yours was until your last post. Likewise, naturally I've not watched as much of AWB as Utd players. My point is that he looks incredibly limited to me, my idea of a modern fullback is one who can contribute offensively and defensively equally effectively however as I mentioned, when watching him I saw a hell of a lot of slide tackles and not much else.

Did they not bring them in line?
Or did I make that up?

Pretty much this. Suddenly so many people on the forum are trained accountants trying to analyse our transfer balance sheets and what not.

Don't even get me started on that one mate, it's bad enough that people will assert that they know best when it comes to player ability, it goes up a whole other level when they start talking about the accounts, finances and contracts that are behind everything.

No issue with discussing things, that's part of the fun. Everyone has an opinion and some more knowledgeable than others but it's this current attitude, where everyone thinks they're a bloody expert and will actually get really rude and aggressive should anyone think otherwise, because they're so damned arrogant that they can't even consider that they might be wrong. Or willing to accept that a lot of what they're saying is based on no experience and just assumptions. Would just like people to be a bit more humble. The debate and conversation would flow much better.

We should be all over this guy, he's a good player and I expect will get better. Certainly would be an upgrade on Fred and Periera.
Completely agree. I was sold on him after we faced anderlecht in the EL. The fact we apparently aren't even interested is frankly depressing. He would probably cost around 40m and was very impressive for leicester last season. Then some on here wonder why others (myself included) bemoan targeting the likes of longstaff.
