It was only 2014 that Wilson scored four goals vs. City U-23's and generally looked like a guarantee for first team promotion. It's not as if he lacked ability, technique, speed or finishing, but it's sad to see that he's playing at Aberdeen at this stage of his career in comparison.

You’d struggle? I wouldn’t.

Working down a list of experienced CMs I would check the availability of Thiago, Pjianic, Rakitic (if Pogba goes to Barca), Rabiot. I would also monitor the development of Neves (of Wolves) if he has a breakthrough season in the EPL, Kovacic (since he’s only a loan with no option to buy and wants out of Real) and also our Pereira.

These are all players I would consider way ahead of spunking 100m on Savic
Available being the key word here, but either way, none of the players you mentioned are better than Milinkovic. Pjanic would only be available at a similar price, Thiago is injury prone and Rabiot is still a prospect, much like Kovacic.

Yeah, availability is the keyword indeed. Hence all the players I mentioned have a degree of availability. I didn't mention anyone who hasn't been suggested that he'd be available for a certain price.

On the bolded part, you see that is where we'll disagree. I've watched Rakitic, Pjanic and Thiago dozens of times in full 90 min performances (not just highlights yeah?) down the years and comparing them to the sample I've seen from Savic they're all at least a level above him at the moment, comfortably.

If the choice was Pjanic at 70-80m (rumoured Juve asking fee) or Savic at 100m, I'd snap Juve's hand off and wouldn't even look at Savic. Savic for me is at the stage of development where Kovacic was when you nicked him form Inter. There's 0 guarantee he'll be a top CM in 2-3 years same as there's still no guarantee for Kovacic. The money mentioned should be for a top CM, which Savic isn't.

The Telegraph are saying the 50 million + Gomes & Mina bid for Pogba was genuine and it included buy-back clauses for both players :lol:

They can get lost with all these buy-back clauses. Come to us and we get them back in form and then Barca start unsettling them again.

That is an absolutely ridiculous statement. Kovacic was a hit-and-miss player at a weak Inter side, and wasn’t even a certain starter. That’s why they didn’t hesitate to sell him for 30m euros.

Savic was the best attacking midfielder in the Serie A last season, even scoring 12 league goals in 35 games.

You clearly do not watch Serie A.

This overrating of Kovacic has been going on multiple threads on the Caf. Glad to see someone putting the right perspective.

I've seen a lot of Pjanic, Rakitic, Thiago AND Milinkovic, and the serb is easily as good or better than the first two, while the third hasn't had a full season in 5 years...

You keep judging a player who by your own admission you know nothing about. It's bizarre

How the feck do Juve do it?
They are totally the masters of nabbing players on the cheap.....seems like the modern rules and inflation of transfer fees just doesn't apply to them

Juve and Bayern are both scrupulous clubs who work on players well in advance of their contracts expiring and get them to run down their contracts and join for free.

Long-term planning. They have a structure in place whereby a director gets involved early on and then it moves forward with their transfer team speaking with agents and other stakeholders. They then detail the options to the manager, who then pinpoints which targets to move forward on. It's how the best clubs seal their deals - Bayern, City, Juve, Barcelona, Real - all have similar structures now and it's how they save money while still developing their squads.

Here are the long reads on how the top clubs operate (including a few lessons for United)

Bayern - https://www.bavarianfootballworks.c...ch-stuttgart-world-cup-france-denmark-boateng

Real - https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/soccer/how-florentino-perez-rebuilt-real-madrid-451392.html

Manchester City - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal...ns-manchester-city-planning-world-domination/

Juventus - http://www.ladsoffthepitch.com/serie-a/juventus-kings-of-the-transfer-market

With the time it's taken to build these structures, it's no wonder these teams are leading the marketplace.

Loaning Wilson every season reminds me of when we were loaning Nick Powell all the time before selling him. Just let him go, he has zero future here.

Juventus gave Conte a lot of power over transger decisions in his first season, most of "his" signings turned out to be duds, while club signings such as Pirlo -who conte didn't want- were massive successes. Since then, they've trusted Paratici and the scouts to call the shots, with the manager only marginally involved in the process(as in, let us know what you think, and we'll maybe take it into consideration, or maybe not). It's part of the reason Conte quit on them

Real Madrid are the polar opposite instead, with either Florentino calling all the shots based on what his advisors tell him(a small circle of people florentino trusts when it comes to football. Some don't even work for real madrid), or a charismatic manager who manages to win his trust making most decisions. In our case you have Florentino dying to sign a goalkeeper while Zidane says no, with the manager winning out. Or Flo dying to sign James while Ancelotti says no, and Flo ignoring him

You could say this about quite a few players we have. There's something very strange about this club when it comes to selling players.
Wages? I think he's on 30,000 a week since he burst onto the scene, so will run his contract down. Same problem with Darmian, Rojo etc (though obviously theyre internationals) the calibre of club then should be at can afford their wages.

I imagine they'd be happy too, but it's likely no one is willing to cough up any money for him and he's unwilling to just let us tear up his contract.

We are absolutely dying for a striker, so hopefully he can show some of the promise he did a few years back. He’ll get plenty of game time.
Was going to write the same thing, hopefully he’ll hit the ground running and find some of that promise he once showed. C’mon the Dons.
