Godin this summer and Toby next year, we would have the best pairing in the league by a country mile. If we can offload a couple of the current bunch at the same time, we’d have done great.

Exactly, I can't see Godin wanting the move at all. He loves the club and with the investments Atletico have made this summer I'm sure he'll want to stick around even longer.

This is brilliant, I would do it all the time on FM. Panic and put in 20 different offers across Europe on the last day and see who accepts and which deals you can drag over the line.

Honestly, people underrate our CD's pretty heavily. Jones has muckups for sure, but is also incredible at running back faster than any striker expects. He's the least reliable of the lot, though, which is saying something. Smalling and Bailly are a lot better than people give them credit for and Lindelof... well honestly I haven't seen him play enough to know. But at the World Cup he was just as good as any other central defender for most of the teams (obvious exceptions are there such as Verane who is a level above everyone).Our defenders’ confidences must be at a all time low..

I think this actually makes a lot of sense. Get Godin in at his low release clause, he'll be the best defender we have for a year or so.
Then buy Alderweireld next summer, once his release clause kicks in.
We'd still have an exceptionally experienced defender in Godin to help the likes of Bailly and Lindelof, and Alderweireld to take over from him as the main experienced defender.
The two combined would cost less than Tottenham want for just Alderweireld this summer.

When will it stop... by 4pm we’ll probably be linked with a move for Maldini or Nesta maybe even Samuel.

To add to this, the reason we may not have moved on this earlier in the window, is likely because we hoped to get a deal done for either Maguire or Alderweireld at a reasonable price, but time is now obviously running out for that.
It could just be rubbish though of course.

At that price I'd imagine lots of clubs have made approaches for Godin, but he just doesn't want to leave. Atletico have a good chance of winning La Liga this season, unfortunately I can't see why he'd want to pass up that chance to come to United.
