Thiago or Kroos would be great and we do lack a midfielder in that mould however, we have massive holes in our squad that need to be addressed first
That would be a fantastic signing for us. I know he flopped for Everton, but that's the only chance why we could have a chance to sign him. Still would be our record signing, some hope.

We already have Matic Fred and Pogba as three CMs. All of them are first choice CMs, with Herrera, Pereira, Fellaini and McTominay as backups. Where are we going to play the new 50+ million CM? Only way we can add a new CM is if we switch to 4-4-2 and if that's the case, the rumor of us wanting a new RW doesn't make much sense
We lack a midfielder that is a consistently incisive passer and can control a game, we've lacked that since Carrick fell off and it needs addressing. It's obvious we aren't going to address LB, so if two players in is the plan I'd rather the CB and Thiago than a CB and £70M for fecking Willian, as Bale is a total pipedream.

I still get PTSD from the Thiago saga. That was the one that convinced me to stop getting invested in transfer rumours. It almost never turns out well.
Well then we'd have gone for Jorginho above Fred.
If we are playing a 3 man midfield you need options, Fred is a good worker bee, he covers a lot of ground, he's a very different type of CM to Jorginho who is fairly slow and needs a Fred type alongside him, so not comparable players. Thiago has a lot more grit in his game than Jorginho while offering the same quality on the ball plus a bit of goal threat as well.
