Leicester were very difficult with City over Mahrez in previous windows so wouldn’t surprise me if that article is true and we fail to get Maguire. Whether we get him or not we’ll end up paying £60m+

I think Lecicester were difficult because of the way City went about it with Mahrez - bidding late, not giving them time to find a replacement and clearly unsettling their player as well.

Maguire is seriously, seriously fecking shit. Gets destroyed against any decent footballing side as he’s so uncoordinated.

His sides have conceded 80 and 60 goals in the last two PL seasons. 20th and 16th in the league. He just an awful player by any top clubs standards. It would be a disastrous piece of business. Jones and Smalling are legitimately better defenders.
Let’s tell Sir Alex Ferguson who was scouting him in 2013, all the professionals who played with him every week and have voted him player of the year at Sheff U, Hull and Leicester, all those involved with England where he was a mountain at the back in their joint best ever World Cup on foreign soil, that he’s actually just fecking shit.

The Caf has spoken, the rest are irrelevant. Stay away.

I'm no fan of him but jesus fecking christ :wenger:

Definitely not something right with all this Maguire briefing, surely a fairly obvious red herring for whatever reason.

I can see it happening Jose likes his English defenders! Signed Cahil, tried to sign Stones and Shaw when he was at Chelsea.
He likes his good defenders.

The anti-Englishness on this page is ridiculous. We've arguably had worse luck with Hispanic signings in recent years. It would be just as nonsensical to start tarring players from that background with the same brush.

Maguire's an excellent player. Forget about his nationality.

Malcom and Mahrez both available this summer, both the gone/going for decent fees and both going/gone to clubs better than us. And we haven't been interested in either? With a glaring hole on our RW?

Something's not right with our transfer policy.

Instead we pursue a third CB in 3 years because we can't get it right. Signed a 6th CM in 5 years because we can't get it right. (With rumours Pogba isn't happy).

People keep making excuses saying people are overreacting but we've been on a downward spiral for over half a decade now with no real signs it's changing. Haven't challenged for a title in 6 years and look as far away now as we have done in that time.

Nothing I said was anti English I was just saying he has a history of buying or trying to buy English defenders. That's why I can see us signing Maguire.

And Jones gets to keep his place, wow.

Why couldn't it be Jones? If we bought no-one and just sold Jones, I'd be happy.

I can't be dealing with season 8 of that ogre falling around Old Trafford and people laughing at his stupid face.

Only God knows how he's lasted this long - you would have thought the FA Cup final would have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Just media, but this is exactly what we should be doing. I never understand when people say "You cant move on 8-9 players in a window and bring in a similar amount they cant settle or gel". What utter poppycock. If you have 8-9 players who are either not good enough or havent performed over a period of time, then isnt settling or gelling irrelevant as the players they are replacing havent anyway?

Shaw, Blind, Darmian, Rojo, Lindelof, Smalling, Jones, Herrera, Fellaini, Mata, Martial. I wouldnt sell all of these players but there is good argument and no genuine reason why the majority of them couldnt be sold. Thats £2-300m of average or under performing players. I could add others to the list in all honesty from personal opinion. Obviously it isnt so easy to sign targets or offload players....but just as an example Sandro, Khoubilay, Bale, Ndombele....would people be happy to swap those eleven players for the four listed as I doubt the fees and wagers would be altered dramatically. Yet I fully expect next season Darmian and Rojo at most if we dont let Martial go will be the only players leaving along with the already departed Blind and we will mkae just one more signing this window which will be a centre back, probably McGuire and at the most Willian too at the end of the window.
NOt that those are awful signings....but yet another exChelsea player would annoy me and it would just be a decent but not good enough window

McGuire may be getting overly hyped to a degree from the world cup....but why did SOuthgate leave Smalling out of the squad and play McGuire over Jones in the world cup?

I think McGuire has been consitantly good for both Hull and Leicester, do I want us to sign him, no not for that price. He is a good defender when we need a great one, but both Jones and Smalling in my opinion let alone Gareth Southgates definately are not better defenders, full of mistakes and injuries and both have glaring weaknesses in there games.

If Martial leaves we need to get a replacemet and put at least a buyback option and a 20% sellon if the club sells

In hindsight maybe loaning out Martial to get Perisic last season would have worked out pretty well. (assuming those rumors were true).

Only chance of anything like that happening is if we sell him for a loss.

As it stands we've paid €60M for him. If we manage to sell him this window for €70-90M we have to pay Monaco half the difference, so if we sell for €80M we have to pay Monaco €5M.

If we sell Martial after this window closes then we don't have to pay Monaco anything. I suspect that is part of the reason why the club were reluctant to sell but his performances in preseason have convinced the club the time to sell is now.
