Who is to say that De Ligt will be a sure thing either? Players from the Dutch league have been hit and miss over the last few years.

The reason we want a player like Toby instead of another prospect is because we need immediate leadership in our defense. Jose is expected to win now. Even Pep has had more success with proven defenders instead of prospects like Stones.

This is just the usual whining about other clubs signings. Just go have a look at Spurs signings over the last 3 years and see how many duds they are.
Who is it to say Toby Alderweireld will bring immediate leadership into our defense? Alderweireld is a very good CB, this is not a post to bash his quality, but he could fail just as much, nothing is sure. Paying ridiculous money for him is stupid when we don't have to, and I'd rather we invest those money smarter.

De Ligt on the other hand is the best CB prospect in recent memory, if there is a chance we need to take it, or we will regret it. Just like Mbappe last season, we should try and bring the best prospects here.

It is not whining about other clubs signing for the sake of it, other clubs make signings all the time. It's about us, wanting your club to make smarter decisions it's not whining.

No one. There's no guarantee in any transfer. Just like there is no guarantee that De Ligt will be a success.

I trust Jose's judgement on defenders. Especially one that is proven in this league and has been one of the better performers too.

Who is to say that signing some youngster over an experienced defender is 'smarter'? Especially when we already have a number of younger defenders here too?

The Mbappe example is just clutching at straws. United simply couldn't afford to pay 166 mil pounds for young player who had played just one season. We have a budget. Nothing smart about that. Even Real Madrid who showed great interest couldn't sign him either.

I trust Jose’s judgement but question his decisions in the same time. Lindelöf shouldn’t have been brought last year, while our FB were overlooked.

De Ligt would be a lesser risk than Toby due to the age, and resale value, that is simple. Not to mention the benefits of a long term service from a younger player.

Why the Mbappe example is clutching at straws? It’s a perfect example of when a genuine world class talent is available you try and bring him in. You don’t pass on talents like that if you could afford. The fact that he will cost as much is irrelevant here, because not every talent costs as much, Ajax are asking for 50m which is doable.

Who cares about re-sale value? We are looking for which one will be better for us. And a player who has been one of the best in his position in the league for the last few seasons (albeit missing much of last season) is less of a risk than an 18 year old who plays in the Dutch league. There is definitely a possibility that De Light will go on to be better, but he's obviously a larger risk. The only real risk with Toby is the injury and whether he's fully recovered from that.
