And if it had never been spent then it wouldn't be sat in United coffers.

Irrelevant point as the money has already been spent by fans and is in the United coffers. If you want to change United's spending habits, you have to stop feeding the club.

United won't stop spending big money on players because

1) The money is there.
2) It makes the club bigger on the global market to get more sponsors.
3) The majority of fans feed of the excitement of signing big name players.
4) Most of the time, said players help the club achieve results which in turn generates more money to be spent on new players.

It's a vicious money generating cycle that can't be stopped. Unless of course the fans stop supporting the club and revenue drops. The faster option is to hire a manager who does not obtain the desired results, stick with that manager no matter what, and see the club lose it's big money sponsors, deals, fans, and revenue.

West Ham? Weird. It might not be that weird though - Rooney wouldn't have to leave England, he could live in London (I'm sure Coleen will bloody love that), playing for a club that has I suppose history and a bit of name value.....could they afford him though?

What makes you say that?

Good luck finding a taker for his wages.
That's the thing. There will be Chinese clubs willing to pay that and then some. Plus, with the world cup next year, Rooney will be desperate to leave, so he won't just stay another season, with even more limited game time. Rooney will naturally lower his wage demand, but surely we should be getting near £10m for a player who can still play at a decent level.

Yeah but he won't go to China so no point thinking about it really

The thing is I think we want him to go with the least amount of fuss possible, as soon as he ruled out China it meant we were unlikely to get much of a fee for him so letting him go as a gesture of good will might be the clubs idea of PR.

No one is going to pay him his wages in the PL regardless. If he wants to play he will leave, he can get money abroad or take a pay cut and play in the PL.

That's not the point. Unless he leaves for China, we are not getting a fee. And imo, that ship has sailed.

What makes you say that?

She's a woman. It's London. Women bloody love that London.

Especially women who love fashion and write about it.

I think it's safe to say Milan is out, at this stage of Wayne's career, and I don't think PSG are gonna be coming calling...so there goes Paris.

So yeah - that bloody London and clothes and stuff.

I don't really see us going for the good PR route now, after treating Bastian like trash for the last 6 months. I just think, if Everton want Rooney, than we should try getting 1 of their players in return, as he still has massive marketing value and is still a very decent player for any upper mid-table team.

That's not strictly true.

If West Ham saw him as a £15m player who they would be prepared to pay £120k a week that'd be a £33m investment over 3 years. With us expected to let him go for a few £m that'd be around £200k a week over 3 years.

So a pay cut then

Why not Gueye? :)

Schweini was only here a year, Rooney has been here 13 years since he was 18 and is our all time leading goal scorer, how we treat him will be vastly different. I just think we'll facilitate the move to Everton if he really wants it, rather than holding out for a fee.

By that same logic, Bayern sold Bastian, who was a club legend, for over £6m to us in very similar circumstances. I'm not saying we should ask for £20m, but waiving the fee is extreme.

The difference is Schweinsteiger didn't have to have his wages supplemented, if anything he got a pay rise coming here.

Genuine question, I'm not asking to be critical but how did Delaney get his "reliable" tag?

Started treating him as reliable a couple of years ago because he had so many endorsers on here. But so much of what he says turns out to be bull
He's not reliable but most reporters aren't to be honest.

Sometimes it's simply about connecting the dots or come up with something that sounds plausible.

Bastian is not our all time scorer but some guy that played 18 largely unimpressive league games for us.

He's been very impressive, but Everton won't sell him. They're much more likely to sell Lukaku or Barkley imo.

Exactly, and if they do sell he won't be cheap, Everton will take us to the cleaners.

We should have tried a swap deal when we sold Morgan but that ship has already sailed.

It's in relation. Bastian was one of the highest earners at Bayern before he moved and they wanted to sell him to save on his wage. In comparison, Rooney, on far more, is also on very high wages and we want rid. Both players were captains of their country, but were past their best. Both players were also in demand. A big difference is, a much bigger club in United were interested in Bastian, while only smaller teams want Rooney. Therefore, it is expected for Rooney to lower his wage demand, while Bastian increased his. Also, if Rooney really does still have aspirations to play for England at the world cup next year, he will move away from us at any cost and not just stay on the bench and get his 250/300k a week. This surely gives us some leverage to get a transfer fee for him. Perhaps I'm basing this off our dealings with Everton, but I really don't want to give them free transfers for players who clearly have market value, when they made us pay £27.5m of Fellaini and want £90m for Lukaku (different sort of player, but still well over his market value).

I get where you're coming from and I guess it's going to come down to if Rooney truly prioritizes playing week in and week out with the intent to make the World Cup squad over money, because he'll have to take a wage cut if we are getting a fee. I just feel that if push comes to shove we'll practically pay him to leave without fuss.

Would be good to see Wazza move on.

Even though it's always sad to see a legend leaving the club, I think it would be the only reasonable decision for all parties - as it would heavily increase Wazzas chances for Russia 2018. Hope Everton sign him up and we can get Lukaku somehow..

Yes, you are probably right. Our wage system always bites us back when trying to sell for a decent fee.

Don't think he'd flop or warm the bench. Inesta is 33.
But he is not going to be Iniesta's replacement. He has been playing more or less on the left wing for Liverpool. I don't think he'll be able to play in Iniesta's position.
