I think you've somewhat missed my point.
It's not the I'm quibbling with Goss being one of the better ones, I'm sure he is, but that he ever stood a realistic chance of being a Carrick replacement. There's myriad examples of players sticking their head out above the parapet a little at youth level, and therefore being hyped as realistic options for the first team.
I appreciate that it is not deliberate. People want to see the players they like at youth level go on to succeed in the first team, and thats half of the fun of youth football. Indeed, it is very hard to judge how far players can go if they stand out at that level, and that most of them go on to have good careers in the upper half of the Championship or the Premier League, but it doesn't change the fact that he could be another in a long line of players tipped to make it who, in reality, probably weren't quite good enough to start with.
