I don't agree with the sudden high ratings of Rabiot on here recently. He's done better than in previous seasons but still is only average to decent. I watch a lot of him and I'm not really sure why Bayern are looking at players of his level.

Cant find rooney transfer thread, if someone can please post it there.

Ancelotti likes him

Would be my first choice to replace Carrick.

Think he's vastly under-rated. So long as people acknowledge that we'd be buying a player who would need moulding and, like Carrick, would improve immeasurably with age.

£40m for Dier who isn't even a guaranteed starter for Spurs? I think he's a solid, above average player who's been made to look better than he is by playing in a great Tottenham side. He's nowhere near a £40m player.

Back in 2006 Carrick was like £18m. At the time it was considered silly money. 40 is pretty much the new 18. Don't really know how good Dier will ever become. But even Carrick wasn't very well received back then. General opinion was that he's pretty good but nothing special. What a deal that turned out to be.

Transfer fees are no longer based solely on the quality of a certain player. It's more about the liquidity of the buyer and how much the player is wanted there. Everyone in the world know that we are one of those clubs who have the financial power to pay up to £100m for a player. Maybe even more. I can honestly see José giving a green light to pay way over the odds whether it's Griezmann or player like Dier. I think he said something about not caring about the prices because he's only about making a winning team.

I for one don't really care about the prices anymore. We've made some idiotic deals lately and squandered millions of pounds but yet we're still standing. Whole transfer business is as fecked up as the rest of the fecked up economy. Won't probably end well but let's enjoy the ride while we can.

He's only 22 yo with high potential. I agree he's still a bit inconsistent but it's not like many players of his age are doing better at a high level.

I'd be moderately annoyed if we signed Dier for anywhere near £40 million. Spurs signed him for £4 million FFS.

Physically, he does fit the profile of a Jose midfielder.

Difference was Carrick back then was very much a first choice midfielder. Dier is not better than Alderweireld not Vertonghen and he's not as good as Dembele or Wanyama. So we're signing a 3rd choice CB and a 3rd choice DM. Silly money for me.

I dont think he is or ever will be as good as carrick on the ball.

It's a myth that Dier isn't as good on the ball, even at his age, statistically, he compares well with Carrick.

They both average just shy of 90% pass completion, both complete similar percentages of balls forward and Dier, on average, even has a longer range of passing. And he starts far more attacks.

Dier is unquestionably better defensively and offensively. Carrick utilises his experiences extremely well, to account for the areas in his game in which he is lacking - and there is nothing wrong with that.

Dier has already shown the intelligence and awareness to play the defensive midfield role very well. And he'll only get better.

I'd be ok with this. Imo, there isn't much of a difference between Dier and Fabinho and they'd both cost £40m and thereabouts, so getting a young Englishman for that wouldn't be worst deal.

Agreed. He has no quality even close to any of Carrick's. He's just physical and average all round at everything else. Wanyama came in and pushed him out within a matter of weeks. No fanx.

I'm sorry, but that's just not true. He's a CB that became a makeshift CDM and performed well in a good team. As soon as an actual CDM came in he was back to the back 3.

There's just so many better options for a similar fee or cheaper, Fabinho and Romeu being the main two.

We play a different system/formation to Spurs. Dier excels as a deep-lying midfielder who screens the defence and is very capable going forward. He's carried out that role for England very well.

See my previous post, statically he and Carrick compare favourably. Hell, Dier even averages a longer range of passing - something Carrick is lauded for.

100 % agreed. But then again. If manager want's him, he won't necessarily care how much we'll end up paying (as long as it's not limiting our other transfers). Now matter who we get we'll have to pay twice the price some smaller club would pay.

I don't actually have an opinion about Dier as a player. He's not their main man that's for sure. But that doesn't really tell anything. I was just making a point about the rumored price and the way it was discussed.

You're kidding right? Once again, the only reason is because England have 0 defensive midfielders. Fecking Jake Livermore got a call up the other day.

I took you up on your offer above and it doesn't really look good at all. Not to mention the pass length will be because he has been playing CB.
