I think what happens when the media dont really have any leads, and the clubs arent telling them anything, is that they just start to guess and to probe for information. Its likely that in Jackson's tweet, we are seeing him try to create some sort of substance for the other journos to ask about at press conferences.

On the Ozil front - got a feeling he's going to end up at Juventus or Bayern, clubs who are both notorious tight-asses yet manage to end up with world-class talent squads. Just feels like it would be wrong for both of them to miss out on the chance of a complete bargain for a top quality once again.

He's not great but on loan, there's no reason United shouldn't be in for him IMO. Gives them a different option on the right of somebody who's comfortable actually playing their on the wing.

Yeah nothing to lose with a loan, if he proves himself then great, if not, back he goes.

And so it begins...
Well the Barcelona/Neymar/Dembele/Coutinho saga that kept everything else on the back burner for the last six months is over. The press in England and Spain need a new toy. Now Chelsea and Tottenham get to have all the fun. :wenger:

@Damien

Are you keeping track of journos records on us?

My instinct is that Jackson's track record was awful, but has that changed?

Was telling in the summer Mourinho was obsessed with Lukaku, even when there were no links to United. Isnt great or bad, somewhere in the middle. Not as bad as people make him out to be, seems a lot of hate came from the van Gaal time. Jackson seemed to hate him

I think what Jamie Jackson is saying is Arsenal have no interest at all in selling Ozil to us. We will have to wait till the summer. Doesn’t mean we can’t sign him now though. So in essence he is off the table. Arsenal, sorry to burst all your bubbles, are not selling Ozil to us at any cost. It’s a direct conflict of a top 4 position.
Move on.
My gut call is we are not signing anyone in this window. We may get someone on a pre contract but don’t expect anyone in January.

Yeh, he never said that.
Asked what Tottenham need to do to keep him, Kane replied: I’ve always said: keep progressing, keep getting better, we want to start winning trophies. That’s the aim, as long as the club keep doing that then, yeah I’m happy here.”

I’ve always thought the idea of a player staying at a club because they’ve won a trophy to be rather strange.

‘I’ll stay if we win the Champions League’: why you’ve already won it. Surely now’s the time to leave.

‘I want to stay until we win a trophy’ makes more sense. It might never happen, of course, but wouldn’t you be more motivated by trying to win something than what’s already happened?

If you go to Bayern, Juve, Real, PSG or Barcelona you are guaranteed to win trophies at some point in your career.

Well I can’t see him being that arsed about winning Serie A or Ligue 1. Pretty soon he’ll get the big wages he deserves which really only leaves Barca or Real who probably cant afford him. I get the impression he’d get more satisfaction from winning things with Spurs, or at least being serious challengers

Indeed. But we're now trying to be a "self-sustaining" club. It's now a massive ordeal to sign anyone over £40m and we have a 1 in, 1 out policy. City on the other hand can drop £50m or more like its £10m.

The only light on the horizon at the moment, is the vague "Pep never stays anywhere long" view, hoping that rings true, and he rucks off to PSG or somewhere in a year or so!

But then no-one ever sees the top teams dropping off. That mid 2000 Chelsea team, who barely conceded a goal, let alone didn't win a game didn't look to be dropping off for ever, yet did pretty quickly.

The aim is football is to win trophies though. So if you're at the team that's winning them, that's in theory the best team, so why would you leave?

Sure, of course he would - but the same goes for all players that are playing for smaller teams. In the end you realize you only have one career and time is ticking quickly. If Harry Kane stayed at Spurs for 7-8 more years I guess the odds are he would pick up a cup or two at max - but would that suffice? Doing a Matt Le Tissier or Alan Shearer? Scoring records are all well and good, but who cares about scoring records when you can have pictures of yourself on the wall with your team raising the Champions League-trophy. Or Spurs could be purchased by rich owners the next year or two and start investing in proper players to challenge Man City, you never know. They are a London-club after all - Arabs like investing in stuff and live in London.

But what if you're at a club that'll win at most 1 trophy in 10 years? That's why a lot of players move to clubs that win a lot of trophies. After players retire, their trophy haul is one of the key ways of judging how good of a career they had.

Depends on the player and his personality. I’ve never really got the impression Le Tiss or Shearer have big regrets about their careers

Exactly. Part of the reason why Liverpool find it difficult to keep hold of their best players. Torres won nothing in four years at Liverpool, then three trophies including the Champions League in the two years after he left. Suarez won 1 cup in three years and has won 9 trophies in the three years since he left. Coutinho's won nothing in five years at Liverpool and seems sure to win at least La Liga come the end of the season.

Even though Torres nosedived in terms of ability (he was already going downhill in his last months at Liverpool), he'll have no regrets about the move. Players want to win stuff at the end of the day and have something to display in their trophy cases/rooms. There are some exceptions to this but if you're being underpaid as well as not winning anything - as is the case with Spurs players - there'll be upset eventually unless one of those things change.
