Chelsea had a £35M bid accepted in the summer but Barkley backed out - probably so he could get higher wages in a cut price move this month. Price was always going to be halved. Like with Sanchez: he was linked with a £60M move last summer and now it is half that if City sign him this month.
He had a full 12 month left though, if the scouse had waited until January then they wouldn't have paid 40m.
I suppose. It just seems a bit distorted how much prices fluctuate in such a short time.

Not that bothered about this one. He’s got some good attributes as a midfielder but I think we can do better.

It’ll be a good move for him as well.

Agreed. The more tactical and methodical style of play in Italy and Juventus will suit his technical skills and slower processor. He´s just too error-prone and slow in his decision-making in a hectic style like Liverpool. He´s not a pure defensive midfielder either. He´s an eight and Keita/Lallana are simply better at it than him. At Juve he´ll likely replace Khedira in that role eventually. Would have been nice to get a little transfer fee (€15-20M), but I can also see the value in squad depth he brings this season, especially if Coutinho leaves you want some continuity in midfield.

Barkley has already turned down better wages at both Everton and Chelsea. Why? Because he wants to come to Spurs, play under Pochettino and believes he can/will break into our first XI.

So why is he going to sign for Arsenal or City or United simply because they also offer higher wages (and that's assuming that any of those clubs will actually want him)?

You might answer that he'd get a bigger signing-on bonus (in consideration of the fact that his transfer fee will be low in January, or zero as of next summer) than he'll get from Spurs. But I find it hard to believe that money is his over-riding motivation, given that he could now (if he'd signed for Chelsea) already be earning a lot more than he will be for the next 6 - 10 months at Everton.

I think he wants a step-up from Everton, to go where he thinks he'll get the best coaching and where he believes he'll stand a good chance of not just being mainly a bench-warmer. In his mind - in my opinion - that means Pochettino and Spurs.

In fairness Barkley might well have preferred Spurs. Spurs didn't want to pay for him, given he will be a free agent in the summer.

If so, seems like a poor decision, especially if the fee is only the rumoured £15m. Nowadays, dwindling contracts are normally a way to get players cheaper rather than a real opportunity to get them for free, since any decent player will get offers late in the contract.

Koeman is a twat. Treated our most creative player like absolute shit and now he wants to leave. Slightly pissed with Barkley in that he has took Koemans vendetta against him against the club when Everton have supported him throughout all of his ills.

He might have preferred Spurs and he might as well have not. It’s just conjecture and hot air from Glaston. Tottenham’s very late declaration of no interest, if anything, shows that they were trying and got turned down.

I don’t really know what transpired between Koeman and Barkley but if a player falls out with a manager who is being backed up by the board, while he also has high profile suitors and a chance to move up career wise.... it’s very likely that he ends up having his head turned and mentally checking out. There came a point when Barkley was no longer interested in playing for Everton. And Koeman was not the sole reason for it.

Barkely? Really!?

£15million as well, should be like £10million.

With Barkley most likely going to Chelsea, I wouldn't mind trying to get Loftus-Cheek in the summer as a more than capable Pogba backup. He would be a relatively cheaper CM option. Kluivert and Mahrez would be good alternatives for the RW.

Loftus-Cheek
Kluivert/ Mahrez
Dybala (marquee player)

I think we'll go all out to sign Dybala and that could be a reason why we've gone cold on the Sandro deal (apart from Luke Shaw recent resurgence). Although I like the look of Tierney though.
Kluivert needs more time at Ajax

A rat move from Barkley to that to his boyhood club.

I am devastated. I have no doubt once he gets fully fit he's going to prove how good he is and we are going to regret this big time. You only have to look at the state of the team without him, we used to dominate all the other teams below us with him in the team now we can't even string 5 passes together and missing him is a big reason why.

Blow for Liverpool, they do have keita coming in but depth in this department will be low unless they plan on using lemar as a midfielder a role which he has played previously.

Barkley's just anothr Drinkwater signing for the Russkis - an Englishman to boost the quota, who'll be a useful squad option. He'll be at someone like West Ham by 2020.

For 15 mill, i wouldn't mind us picking up Barkley, he's a good player.

He's a more talented player than Chamberlain who you signed for 3 times the price in similar circumstances. I think it's pretty obvious where the questions should be aimed in regards to this one.

My only guess is that he's being bought as a rotation option for Cesc in the 3-5-2. Can't say I've watched Barkley enough at Everton to know whether he's defensively disciplined enough to play in a midfield 2 when we play 3-4-3.

All these people saying that £15m is a bargain and that may be true, but only if he is fit right away. If he comes in and his hamstring goes then it's just money down the drain. Think he's got to play the rest of the reason before we know if it's a good deal or not.

Monumental steal, this. Conte might turn him into the beast he was supposed to become.

I don't see where he'll fit in and be able to regularly start, Chelsea's CM options are already decent and I can't see him getting a lot of game time. Maybe Conte sees him as someone who can replace Fabregas?

£15m for a decent squad player is a bargain these days however.

Yup. He could have been signed on a free in the summer. £15m sounds excessive.

Barkley is great all of a sudden now he is going to Chelsea

I love the caf's trademark "We should have been in at that price"

He is a decent player, nothing less, nothing more.
