Ignoring that he's a CM Doucoure is exactly the type of player we'd have signed under Fergie.

He's looked comfortably Watford's best player and looks ready to step up.

Be a shrewd signing I think.

I'll be honest, I've only seen Doucoure a handful of times but he was far and away the best player on the pitch when Watford hammered Chelsea. Be a smart signing, Dembele and Ramires comparisons are spot on for me, hopefully wouldn't cost an arm and a leg either.

Agree. Surprised that so many are able to give a thorough analysis of the player though. How many Watford-games do people see? And how focused are they when they do? Are all their attention Doucoure? I would understand if he was some sort of hyped wonderkid, but do people really spend a lot of time studying Doucoure?!

If we are interested, I trust that Mourinho and his scouts do. Probably we would have seen all his game, and keeping focus on this guy. I would trust that Mourinho had asked Pogba about him (that played regularly with him at underage level). I would trust that he called up Marco Silva and asked him about his attitude and commitment.

I remember one guy in here passing harsh judgement on Matic, and I would say he was very wrong in his assesment. Maybe he should learn from that?

If Mourinho wants Docoure then he is a quality player. His scouting network is top notch.

I remember when people said that exact same thing about Ighalo.

There's loads of examples either way. The only other option is big high profile signings constantly or wonderkids. Neither of those have a 100% record either.

There's definitely middle ground between the best players from a lower half of the table team and big high profile signings.

Im with you here. Watching Schneiderlin, I think he was rather slow in his way of distributing. Doucoure seems more talebted. More clever on the ball and able to attack as well.

Doucoure is a very good player - I am all for us trying to sign him

Really?

I'll name some United ones from over the years. A mix of successful and not so successful signings.

Kagawa.
Evra.
Vidic.
Ferdinand (not from a lower half of the table team).
Mkhitaryan.
Fellaini.
Carrick.
Rojo.
Young.
Blind.
Darmian.
Schneiderlin (at the time, Saints were better than Watford now).
Van Der Sar (although similar to Doucoure, I'll admit, had way more pedigree).

So exactly my point then? Would you rather us be targeting those sort of players now?

Not really your point I don't think. Or if it was, it's a poor point.

You said exactly the type of signing Fergie would make, but Fergie would make all types of signings. Big expensive players (Ferdinand, Veron), players from mid table teams (Valencia, Young) and youth players with potential (Rafael, Chicharito, Djemba Djemba).

But the one he was known best for was picking up players on the verge of making the step up.

You then went on to suggest that it wasn't a sure thing (such was your ighalo point) which I then mentioned no other signing we would currently make would be a sure thing either.

That wasn't exactly my point tbf, but close.

My point is there are plenty of player who look the part for short spells. Would Doucoure be an Ighalo or a Mahrez?

That will never be known though will it until he moves.

We could let him go to another big club and thrive and be cursing why we didn't sign him. Or snap him up, if he flops he'll just be sold again much like Schniderlin was.

In the end these types of transfers are low risk for us, with the main problem being that we didn't sign someone else.

I currently can't see many options in that position that are available. So I'd be good with giving Doucoure a try as he seems like he could step up

If anything it's our record at the high profile signings that has been pretty poor in recent times.

I havent seen him play live and cant say I took much notice when Watford were on TV, but for that money, and what the majority think on here surely its worth a punt, and if it doesnt come off its no big deal to sell again. Much better than spunk a fortune on a player and that doesnt come off.

When you say ‘for that money’, what money are you talking about?

I can't find it now but on newsnow one paper saidhis value was 10.5 million. Even if it was double, that be worth having a look

Pogba & Ibra have been shrewd business! They’re our highest profile players, so who are you aiming that post at?

Di Maria ? Even Sanchez hasn't been great so far.

Ibra was for free and Pogba has been OK at best.

Then there's Lukaku who again hasn't set the world on fire.

You expect consitently world class performances from these players. Not middling or blow hot blow cold type.

What? Pogba and Zlatan are shrewd signings? You consider shrewd signings as the ones which go below the radar and then show their value. There is a thought process and calculated risk involved. More like Evra and Vidic signings. Not some well known players for whom United broke the bank to buy and other clubs were equally interested.

Given the state of midfield options at United heading into next season, I wouldn't mind getting Doucoure, Fabinho, and Tolisso to fill out the midfield 3 and provide some competition/cover for Valencia at RB/RM. After McT's elevation to first team, the midfield position is pretty bare in the reserve/youth ranks as well.

I'm not sure a world record signing can ever be called shrewd.

Getting Pogba the year before the market exploded is shrew in my opinion. Jose mentioned soon after we got Pogba he felt that record would be broken before not too long and he was correct.

Massively marketable, extremely talented and has if needed great sell on value. Unless people are unhappy with his transfer, I believe the club got a very good deal.

(Catalan) SPORT:
Mourinho wants Umtiti.
The coach wants the center back and United offer 9 million euros per season.
Samuel's will is to renew with Barça, but he asks for a figure based on his performance.

Mundo Deportivo: Nyemar wants to return to Barcelona. The player spoke to players and staff, he admitted it was a mistake joining PSG.

Dacoure would be a Fergie type of signing.

nah...... SAF would have gone for the likes of Payet/Eriksen and asked them to play in CM.
Doucoure would be a good addition, as he can partner Matic as well as replace him, when needed. BUt we need to add another creative midfielder.
