First of all, I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say. Mourinho has claimed to play Pogba in 4-3-3 against Newcastle with Lingard used as a No. 8 which I beg to differ. He was playing a 4-2-3-1 which means Pogba in a two man midfield. Secondly, Scholes started off his career as a No. 10 and a more CAM rather than a CM. He had Roy Keane and Nicky Butt to protect him. So for you to make comparisons with Scholes is a little absurd.
Yes, when Scholes had lost him pace, he had a more withdrawn role because of his passing range, experience and intelligence and not for his ability to break up play. Scholes was never a box-to-box midfielder but more of a deep lying playmaker which Pogba isn't. Pogba has decent long passes but he's more devastating in the final third.
In a 2 man midfield, he needs to be more defensive and in a 3 man midfield, he can venture out because he doesn't need to track back as much to defend.
