You WILL give me Hummels :lol::lol:

Contracts coming due isn't it? If Dortmund fear he wants to leave, its probably best to get rid when you can get a fee for him.
But £16m when we have a surplus of midfielders (when all are fit) and when we're screaming out for defenders seems a bit LvG to me. There's even rumour we're in for DeJong! Just buy some quality fit defenders Louis!

Rooney is playing midfield LVG is obv not happy with his options

Fletcher has made 10 apperances this season and Fellaini 11.

Thats 21 apperances I'd rather Gundogan have if he can get back to old ways.

I'm skeptical though, not just of his injury but the whole post Dortmund syndrome. Kloop gets every drip out of his players, I can't think of any that went on to perform elsewhere. Even Lewandowski has hardly set the world alight at Bayern.

Yeah, the injuries have been terrible but when all our players are fit we will have only starting strikers and Wilson (no, happy to play back-up, strikers of any quality) we'll have a plethora of midfielders and only Rojo, Evans, Jones, Rafa, Smalling and Shaw as traditional defenders (add McNair and Blackett if you want but it only serves to highlight the deficiency IMHO). That is the top-heavy team LvG claims he inherited and other than buying Rojo he's done very little to address the balance.

That's fine if you are resigned to permanently having more injured players than fit players … do you seriously think Fletcher would have even played the cup game if all our midfielders were fit? When they are all fit and available there is no-way they will all get regular game time … some people call that competition for places I'm not so sure. I'd say that unless some midfielders are out the door then I'd prefer that we concentrate on Vidal … I mean defenders :o

You have a squad because people aren't always fit. The idea is to have as good a squad as possible so you hardly notice. At the moment we're in a position where Fletcher gets 10 games by January. I'd rather not be in that position.

Point taken but I'd also rather not be in the position where Michael Carrick is playing in defence so I guess I'm saying the money should be spent where it is most desperately needed.

If we buy Gundogan, that's more of a deal where you have to go for it if he's available. Buying him doesn't mean anything one way or the other in regards to sorting the defence out. We could sign 2 defenders as easily as signing no defenders if Gundogan comes in. One has nothing to do with the other.

I just watched a Hummels compilation video. I'd forgotten how good he really was
Same  I'd forgotten what it looked like for a center back to cooly play the ball out from the back, even beating a man in the process  If Evans tried that I'd be watching through my fingers.

I'd agree if I thought we only had a certain amount to spend. Buying a midfiekder won't take money from our new defender piggy bank.

No chance Hummels will leave now, but I think we have a good chance in the summer, especially if Dortmund fail to make CL.

Considering Jones and Smalling have both carried the ball out past two or three players on more than one occasion in the last 3 games I'd say start watching us more...

Gundogan, getting even back to 80% of his best would be an immense signing.

That last bit is quite interesting. Never thought of it that way. Sahin, Shinji is who I'm guessing "failed". Lewandowski and Gotze aren't going too badly, are they?

I haven't followed Bayern in the Bundesliga much but always just assumed Lewa isn't a Pep type of forward and that he would struggled. Maybe @Balu can drop me a PM ;) Don't want to derail the thread.

Whats with us chasing all these injured or recovering from serious injury players :lol: we're like a rehab center!!!

Although I was obviously exaggerating, the way Jones and Smalling bring the ball out is normally incomparable to the way Hummels does it. I've seen next to none of Dortmund this season so I'm talking about the last few seasons, but Hummels regularly puts a tackle in and immediately starts a counter attack with a through ball.

Perhaps my memory is going, but I can't recall the last time Jones or Smalling did anything other than tackle and play a simple ball. Mind you, I do rate Jones and Smalling so I don't want this to turn into an attack on them, as that wasn't part of my OP.

Dortmund this season  now there's some football that needs to be watched through fingers!

Our defence is the third best in the division having been decimated by injury for the entire campaign. We've conceded only one more than Chelsea, for example.

Our attacking play, or lack of it, is a much bigger issue at the moment. We don't score that many goals and don't look anywhere near as creative as our names on paper suggest we should. There is no quick fix, primarily because the aforementioned players are no better than what we already have, especially when scrutinised like a United player should be.
Our attacking play is suffering so much because half the time they're back helping the defense. They're scared of going full on counter attack in case we lose the ball then we get counter attacked with our defense.

If our attack could trust our defense then we'd be pushing players forward a lot more and we'd be taking more risks in our forward play.

1. If we'd signed Valdes I hope that doesnt mean anything for DDG's new deal and we're signing him as a nr. 2

2. Surely Vidić wont go to Liverpool, surely..

Hopefully the fact Valdes contract is only 1.5 years moans he's purely back-up.

If we can land a CM like Gundogan (who was my #1 choice for to be our CM before his injury) we need to go for him...especially at the price of £16m. Before his injury he was one of the best CM's in Europe.
