Stam looked superb next to De Boer and actually De Boer was the reason to more goals conceded than Stam. Stam however made one huge clumsy error and all people remember is that one error.

Vidic for example wasn't shaky next to Ferdinand because Torres pulled a trick on him repeatedly.

Stam grew a lot since that partnership, that was exactly my point. With Stam alongside him de Boer looked like one of the best CBs in the world, and without him he looked decent. Now imagine Stam, who grew so much in the rest of his career and became the monster we remember him for, partnered with de Boer who excelled with Stam next to him. It's not just a proven partnership, its an upgrade for it.
