Yeah it is really odd. Koeman was much better than Pique defensively for example, they are both considered similar though - bound to concede due to dumb positioning etc.

I have a rock solid, World Cup winning central defender on my hands whom I'm looking to upgrade - and, quite frankly, Ronald Koeman - much as I like him - isn't really that much of an upgrade, if an upgrade at all, given my requirements.

Can't believe those two worked so well together considering both their specialities were long ranged passing. Usually the team fails to benefit it when two players have the exact same strength like that.

Aye...in theory. But the term "poisoned chalice" does spring to mind. And then there are the problems surrounding Ronald we've already discussed - I won't bring them up too heavily if our paths cross, I promise you, 'cause I'm a gentleman. But Koeman is not a CB you can easily slot in and get votes for - that's a fact. And it ain't all unfounded - for my money you need to team him up with the right foil.

I think it usually gets to a point where the people who likes him gets annoyed and really starts voicing their opinions in the thread. After that he takes some deserved steps up usually with the transfer people at least.

Why would that be? The more people who can do it the less you need to pass the ball around for it to get to the right person, who could be heavily under pressure. You are Titus Bramble, you want to give it to Koeman but that pass looks dangerouns it could be intercepted... Never mind, Guardiola is available. And viceversa.

Interesting, I hadn`t really thought about that. Was leaning towards just signing Moller, who I have a childhood fondness for, and makes sense with his ability to cut in and shoot when Roberto Carlos attracts attention wider left.

But there are some decent right wing options for sure. One brilliant one in particular that I have no idea how they failed to get picked, but not a good fit for my team`s lack of height in attack.

Yes, anto is on to something which pertains to what I would call general fantasy draft logic, or lack thereof: if you have one excellent long passer in your team, the inclusion of another somehow cripples you...it makes zero sense. If you play both Scholes and Pirlo, both in deep playmaking midfield roles, you have done something questionable. Yes. But the ability itself, the ability to create through hitting pinpoint passes, is not wasted once you introduce more than one player who possesses it. It all comes down to balance - figure out how you want to set up, then slot the right player into the space which suits him the most. Then use him to the best of his abilities. It's easy - anyone with half a brain can be a so-called football manager.

You mean Andreas Möller?

Hell of a player. I always hated him - but he was very, very good. And I've considered him in a draft context - both in this one and in the last. He is a very good shout, but the issue here is with Messi: In my opinion you build your team around him, fully - or you don't. And...well, you do - because he IS one of the few players you can trust to perform as a false nine against any kind of opposition. So - get yourself that right wing man.

I do, yeah.

The problem is the best right winger out there by far is Michel, and without any aerial threat, his crossing ability is wasted and he`ll be seen as a poor choice.

I just think it`s hard to see how I`m not better off with Forlan or Raul up front and Messi out right than Messi as a false 9 and the options i have for right wing. Mind you, Suarez has performed better at club level out right than out left, so I could also play him out right and someone else out left.

I was attempting to ironically hint at that their defensive "liabilities". They both played together at the highest level for maybe the second best team after Milan between 90-95 and they made it work together.

Considering them defensive liabilities is a bit odd in that context, one of them would have one hell of a job keeping the team working if the other was supposed to be a liability.

I know, mate - and I for one wouldn't dream of calling Koeman a defensive liability. It's ludicrous. Just as it's ludicrous to suggest that the long range abilities of Koeman and Pep should somehow, miraculously, cancel each other out and become a weakness when both are employed in the same set-up.

But the latter seems to be a notion that goes around - as if there is a prescription to how you set up a team which must be followed, in spite of ample evidence - from real life football teams no less - to the contrary.

Aye, I enjoy it when a player gets 'rehabilitated' over the course of these drafts. Balu finally got Cruyff his due credit IIRC and TITO did similar with Totti. I tried my best with Del Piero when I took over Fergus' team for a match and failed dismally :lol:

Yeah, it is one of the better things of these drafts. Cruyff and Totti are great examples of it, I believe Antohan has plenty more like those as well.

Well it is difficult, the first 10 people who tried to get Totti/Koeman their credit ran with their heads in to a wall and were sent out.
