Transfer Deadline Day

I'm shocked Pool let Merieles go so easily and I can't see how Arteta is really going to improve Arsenal, he's been poor for 2 seasons.

That's not the point. Tackling is far from the main attribute of Meireles. Point was that neither is that theirs. With the way the team pressures the opponent you don't need to be a very good tackler to win the ball.

Still, they might argue that he hasn't been putting in the effort defensively and that he's not good enough to totally neglect that side of the game.

I don't know if that's true - I don't think so, if you're interested in my opinion - but there's an argument to be made there.

Is Gibson in his final year of the contract? If so, I hope he signs a new one or we are getting good money on him in january. No free please.

Could Mereiles leaving be down to the fact he was a Hodgson signing and not Kennys. It wouldn't suprise me

Good point and now for the fantastic bit of news you've been waiting for. :D

This transfer window we've managed to expunge (other than Meireles), wait for it:

El Zhar, Pacheco, Jovanovic, Poulsen, Cole, Ngog, Degen, Eccleston. Of the Bodgson signings only reserve keeper Brad Jones remains.

So, to reiterate, you will never see these players don a Liverpool shirt for any rotation we employ. Ever. :) RESULT.

That old chestnut - give 100% or more - a typically English footballing attitude that gets us nowhere on the European or World stages. You obviously know far more about the player than I do, but Chelsea have England's most solid defence and best goalkeeper, they have a midfield that includes Essien and Ramires. As I said a moment ago, Oriol Romeu is a name that will become very familiar in premier league circles this year, and despite not playing in England yet you could put him on an extended shortlist for young player of the year and just about get away with it.

Basically my point is Chelsea is not Liverpool, we do not need him to charge around the pitch like a maniac and we do not need him to stifle the opposition. If he makes one killer throughball, one cross, one run through the defence in a game and is successful then he has done his job.

I beg to differ.

You know this how?

Because he's Spanish. Looked decent for the under 21s, worked in a passing midfield and put in some tackles. But is he that special? Dont think so

We have the best set of defenders in the league but defensively we're not the best team these days. A lot of that is down to tactics of course.

Fair enough. I don't really know how your manager will set you out so we'll wait and see. You'll get as many through balls from him as you did from the last midfielder you bought from us - Benayoun. You can only deliver if you play, Meireles was on our bench and can't see how that makes him an automatic starter for a team that finished higher than us last season.

So excited, still buzzing so thought I'd bump this already and also mention....out of all the sh*t Bodgson bought INTO Liverpool he never took OUT with him to West Brom. Ask yourselves why?

He could have taken Konchesky and Poulsen at the very least.

I think Meireles is a pretty good signing for Chelsea. Villas Boas'll probably use him as a holding midfield player (where he's played for Portugal) and he'll be an upgrade over Mikel at that position.

Good job Arsenal.. Some older players with a backbone and experience is exactly what they need right now!! That's I think what Sir Alex would had done if we'd been in the same situation. Should be fun to watch the team play now and take points from the other top teams.

Meireles I think had someone from Chelsea to told him what to do and Liverpool had no chance to keep him after that, other than deny everything if he'd stayed there. There's no way he'd done that by himself and not having a plan-B (or team-B).

He might have tattoos but I don't think he'd be any sort of defensive midfielder.

I'm not sure, I think he's been more advanced than that when I've seen them, though that's usually at tournaments or in bigger friendlies.

A fair few of the players you listed were a legacy of Rafa, too, weren't they?

They don't have any money? Why take Konchesky or Poulsen when you have Mulumbu or Shorey/Mattock?

Wasn't Danny Wilson one of the first Hodgson signings?

I rate Pacheco with what I've seen from him with Spain U-19 and U-20. Why hasn't he gotten a chance whilst Shelvey and Spearing are always getting a nod in?

Dalglish is old fashioned. He likes his players to give 100%. More if possible, definitely not less.

Wow. That is old fashioned. Most modern managers prefer players to give 65% or so.

Could you make a dumber statement?

More interesting facts emerging. These are rough figures obviously but paint a picture:

rorysmith_tel Rory Smith
As far as I can tell, #LFC have cut £30m off their wage bill and earned about £25m in transfer fees this summer. Net spend.

The £30m wage bill is crucial I think. Part of the moneyball strategy no doubt. Hopefully clearing the way for a better midfielder in January (Hazard)?

Does Rory Smith have a printscreen of Liverpool's accounting?

I also can't see how Liverpool have earned money from transfers.
Meireles 12m
Aquilani loan
N'Gog 4m
rest less than 4m.

Whilst Henderson, Adam, Coates, Downing, Enrique and Doni are easily more than 50m. Why are you reading tweets from twits you twat?

I guess he's splitting the transfer spend across the length of the players contracts and counting the wage expenses of the sold players in the same year.

Yes but you the solution to that supposed argument is Adam and Henderson, neither of whom are better players. Adam is great at set pieces sure. He's like a sniper. You don't put them on the front lines. Or in battle for that matter. They're special cases used in special scenarios. For Liverpool, playing him is equivalent of Stoke playing Delap. Apart from their main asset they don't do a phenomenal job.

That makes no sense at all. How many at Liverpool have seen out their contract the last 10 years? It's tweaking the numbers to fit your agenda. Every Tom, Dick and Harry know that Liverpool have spent way more than they have sold for.

Not a chance of that being true
