Television Trailer Park Boys

Is it like Parks & Rec in that way that the first season is shit but the rest is good? 1st season is not pumping any blood to my nether region so far.

Ok, I am very confused. I decided to watch this on Netflix since it seemed well regarded by people who's taste I trust, so I whacked on the pilot.

It was awful. Really awful. And not just regular show awful, or awfully made but still quite charming and amusing awful. Genuinely awful awful. In every aspect. Every single aspect of it from the writing to the making to the acting to the story to the comedy to...well, everything else, was awful. I am staggered this even got on television. Or anywhere near with that pilot. There wasn't anything in it that was remotely redeeming or even internal chuckle worthy amusing.

So naturally, I assumed it must just start sketchily and get much, much better as they settle into it. I mean, after all people are calling it one of the best shows ever in here. So I skipped to the season 4 opener, thinking that would be a fair test.

It was still pretty awful. I half chuckled once, at the comedy retard in the comedy glasses doing comedy drunk.

So I am very confused. Is this some huge practical joke on me by the rest of the world? Or have I just inadvertently chosen the worst two episodes by complete chance?

I don't want to be ostracised from cool TV society, or have to conclude you're all genuinely insane. So what's a good, non awful entry point?

Maybe it's just not to your taste.

Do you like your comedies to be clever? Because if you do, you probably won't TPB. Dumb humour throughout but I love it.

You just don't get it then.

Light a good one and start watching from the beginning without specific expectations... give it a proper go.

I did. I watched the pilot. That's the problem. There was nothing funny in it what so ever. And I don't mean nothing I didn't find funny. I mean nothing that could conceivably be funny to anyone. At all. Dumb or clever. In fact if I'd just flicked it on TV absentmindedly, I would've thought it was a poor attempt at a drama.

The 4th season one seemed more like a comedy, but it was still rather pants.

I'm not doing this to prove a point or have a go, I am generally really confused as to what I'm missing, or if I've just watched a bad episode. It seems really liked by people who seem normal. Hence why I put it on in the first place. I want to get it. I've heard it's good. Hence why I sat in complete bafflement at how awful it seemed.

Was the first episode supposed to be straight and then it became a comedy later on? Or is the first episode generally considered to be bad? Like Parks & Recs 1st season is?

If I remember correctly the pilot was pretty poor, try watching a few more episodes in the right order. Its not a particularly clever show but has some great characters and once you know them a little better you will 'get the show'.
It didnt draw me in straight away but now I love it, it's one of my favourite shows.

You either hate it or love it, simple as that really. You should just keep on watchin the feckin boys, worst case ontario your ears will implode with the shit pressure when the old shit barometer rises knowamsayiiiiin

It's just stupid as feck but there is method to the madness in there somewhere. J-Roc is absolutely hilarious.

Nice to hear someone else say it. I gave it a go as well because people here rated it, calling it the dog's bollocks and all sorts of other British slang. I thought it was awful. Just didn't want to say anything because I was afraid of angering all the stoners. Might have given it a better go if the chicks weren't so fugly.

I was going to post the same thing. I watched the pilot and was wondering what I was missing. It's a comedy show without the comedy in it.

I don't get the "it's a dumb show" thing either. I love alot of dumb shows. Reno 911 is a dumb show. And it's incredibly obvious why people would/wouldn't find that funny (I do).. The pilot wasn't dumb, it was just awful. It was a weird homemade thing about some guy coming back from jail and kicking out the faux tough guy who'd replaced him. Everyone was a 2D character and no one could act (neither of these things would be bad if it was funny...or not awful)

Can someone who loves it re-watch the pilot and tell me what exactly it is I was supposed to be finding funny? Maybe I really just don't get it. But considering it's so revered, got 7 series and 3 movies out of it, I feel like I should at least give it a chance.

The pilot and the early series are a bit scratchy & amateurish and not as good as the later series when the actors got a handle on their characters and the writing improved. But the ad-hoc low production value of the show is there all the way through.

You need to choose one of the middle series; and watch about 4-5 episodes back to back. If it's still doing nothing for you at that point i'd give up, it's not for you.

Asking for someone to explain why something is funny kinda defeats the purpose.

I can see what you're saying and I while I do like the show, I couldn't actually tell you why I like it beyond the colourful language characters like Lahey and Ricky use. I think another thing I find funny about it is Julian is always carrying a glass of whisky & coke, regardless of the situation. It does get a bit boring and tedious, especially in the last season or two but by and large I find it enjoyable to watch.

Are any of the films a more palatable entry point? US Netflix seems to keep insisting I watch it

Honestly why didn't I start watching this sooner? I've flown through the first five seasons the past month or so. And there's a couple of movies too! I think Ricky is honestly my favourite character on television.

Ah he's a hero.

New movie came out last week. Might think about popping out to see it as I'm guessing it won't be online for a while. Any news on when the new season is coming out?

Rickyisms on youtube is a good watch. I always flick it on once in a while to reminisce.

One of my favourites

Classic! was actually searching for that quote but I'd no idea how to spell it! I told you so.

The thing about TPB is I want to live there with them. I'm still gutted I missed the time all three of the boys went to my local bar on the one night I wasn't there due to a friends birthday.

So.. this is like a TOWIE for men?

I think you have to smoke a lot of weed to find it funny. It's genuinely the only time I've ever felt old, or like my parents watching something and just completely failing to get any of it.

You don't have to smoke any weed, just watch 4-5 eps and suddenly it will all click. I saw it on TV about 2 years before I started watching it properly and turned it off after 10 because it looked like the worst thing ever. Only when I watched one of the movies first did I suddenly love it. It might be better to start with one of them.

Yep, if I could somehow live in any show, it would be TPB.

The notion TPB is like a dumb comedy is also wrong, there is a ton of backstory and shit. Small details littered everywhere.

I've tried, honestly. I watched about 3 episodes from 3 different series, whilst really, really wanting to get it. I don't want to be the kind of person that doesn't get it, but alas, I am. I thought it was pants. One guy says things wrong. One guy doesn't wear a shirt. One guy carries a drink around all the time. Even that video has about 3 amusing things in it. I genuinely tried, but it's clearly one those things I just don't get.

Well not everyone can like everything. It's not as superficial as it seems mind, there are reasons to why the characters are as they are...(horrendous sentence)

Damn, this is like Brophs all over again. It will happen Mockney, it will happen. Maybe. Okay if one day you don't mind wasting an hour or so, watch Trailer Park Boys: The Movie (2006) or even Countdown to Liquor Day. I reckon one of those will do it.

My mate watched it there not so long ago. He watched the entire series in about a week. I don't even think I've seen the last few seasons myself.

I watched the first season not long ago and liked it, but I also watched Futurama at the same time and in the end I kept watching that and forgot about it. I'll probably start again after I've finished The West Wing.
