Television Top Gear

It was better than last week, I think and there are certainly positives in there. I think Matt le Blanc has been way, way better than I expected, however Chris Evans has been much poorer than I thought he would be, so that's sort of balanced out, I guess. The McLaren segment was excellent and the SUV bit was decent enough - pretty standard Top Gear stuff. Eddie Jordan was pretty crap though.

The worst part by a mile is the format of the new 'Star in a Rally Cross Car' part. The audience cheer-vote-thing is awful and unnecessary and I hate when the guests read off the autocue to tell us why the other guest is on the show. So cringe and not needed. Also, the 'jokes' about old haircuts is shite, get rid of that.

It remains a decent watch on a Sunday night and I think it shall continue to get better.

This. The whole interview segment is so unnatural and it feels more of a bit to plug whatever the guests are doing than anything else.

Also, it will probably take about 15 years for Jordan, Leblanc and Evans to find any sort of chemistry..

RAWK Evans said:
"The way Top Gear is being viewed is repositioning the way television is consumed."
Gimme a break. He'll be making up an Alternative League table next.

Caught up on this yesterday. Think it was OK...not as good as the original though. Evans tries too hard and comes across a bit fake/contrived but nowhere as bad as some comments portray. Give him a couple of episodes to settle down to his gig and he should do OK. The spontaneous political incorrectness of Jeremy can and will never be replicated.

They should just have fecked off the interview section completely.

I refuse to believe that anybody used to watch that bit on iPlayer and not skip it 9/10 times.

Evans saying the things that were relevant for his side of the argument last week are now irrelevant for the opposite side of the argument this week.

It was better than the first episode but Evans isn´t good and it´s all just a bit meh...

Thought it was better than half of last seasons stuff to be honest. The celebs on the main segment twas an improvement and meant it wasn't all about the hosts.

Has everyone forgot how tiresome the old jokes were "oh your slow" "I'm mildly racist" "I'm a small man they call a hamster" over and over. It's like people complaining Gogglebox hasn't become a David Attenborough feature.

Apparently the Antiques Roadshow episode that was on at the same time beat it for viewers.

And that was a repeat.

The best two presenters haven't been on the main show yet, the mind boggles.

Just watched ep. 2 after having failed to watch the whole first episode. These guys just don't come off as car people. Didn't know I was such a big Top Gear fan until recently when I watched the few seasons on Netflix. Had only watched an episode here and there before that. Can't wait for The Grand Tour.

The star in the reasonably priced car used to be a decent feature originally. They used to always invite car people and only discuss their car history.

Then it turned into the Graham Norton show.

Who gives a feck what film they're doing, oh, this cnut hasn't even got a driving licence. feck off!

Top Gear has been shite for several years.

Although wasn't the main reason being Jonathan Ross(Who had the big talk show at the time)got the sack for some prank phone call. So the BBC had a ton of big celebrity's interviews lined up but no talk show to put them on, so the next best step was to use the star in the reasonably priced car segment as the talk show. Feck this was a long time ago.

Oh and yes it's been shite for years.

LeBlanc often seems bored. Be surprised if he's onboard for the next series.

2nd episode was a bit better.

Agree on reasonably priced car. Same thing happened with Soccer AM, turned into an interview or promotional tool for the guests.

Really forced banter, awkward as, they need better writers/direction. Evans is such a milkdrinking twerp.

I've quite enjoyed the second ep so far. Most of the problems have been somewhat masked (Evans is still annoying but Jensen Button and the 5 others in the two films covered that) Matt LeBlanc was decent again. The star in the rallycross car segment looked unwatchable again from the two seconds of it that I watched before skipping, but apart from that its definitely a marked improvement.

This, he just doesnt seem to fit, whether its just the american accent or the fact its Joey from Friends. Theres just no chemistry. They would have been better sticking with the news segment and the star in the reasonably priced car. Evans is best when he is interviewing someone. MLB is just a bad fit.

The abuse stems from the fact that he is a seasoned professional who is being paid millions of pounds to give a credible performance and he has failed.

Not being up to the job doesn't really justify the nigh on vilification he's getting.

That said, he's being really silly in his rants about ratings.

Think it's next week we'll really find out how popular it is. First week lots of people will have tuned in out of curiosity. Second week we're down to the actual fans of the show. If it drops considerably again, it's in trouble.

Not watched any of this but still think Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge was the best suggestion

Just catching the end of this. LeBlanc has nowhere near enough personality. Eddie looks genuinely annoyed at his seemingly jokey comments, but when they're delivered in LeBlanc's dull way I'm not surprised as there's nothing jovial about it.

That's a great shout. Don't even like the program, but that would have been perfect. I guess it might be too British for international audiences though.

I like the Wheeler Dealers presenters, a lot more chemistry than MLB and Evans will ever have. Plus they have a tonne of knowledge about cars, which always helps.

Enjoyed the 2nd episode, if you can just watch it for what it is, it's really not that bad.

Can't stand Mike Brewer, all his nonsense patter. Ed China is a top presenter though.

From a country which had little to know no knowledge about this Evans chap, he's quickly become the most irritating man on the telly for me.

What's his claim to fame?

The dorky whoos and cheers he makes during the celeb track race made my entire body cringe.

This weeks hasnt been too bad... Probably because the other two arent too heavily in it!

90's 'lad'. The mid life crisis has landed with a bang.

The show is fecking terrible, at least the old 3 had some sort of chemistry, you could tell they were mates. The new crew just looks like a load of randomers trying to pretend they're big mates... which is what it is essentially.

Much better this week, they should have shown this as the first episode.

I thought this week's show was really, really good. I'm starting to wonder if there is a method to the order they've shown them in - they seem to have gotten better as the weeks go by.

Weakest part was the final bit with Ken Block and MLB - the part we already knew a little about. All seemed a bit pointless - similar to the Blackpool trip in the first show.

I thought Rory Reid's segment was really good - I really like his presenting style - he breathes new life and enthusiasm into the already tried and tested formula. Almost like a PC, modern day, Clarkson... if that sentence could ever feasibly be complimentary.

Even the celeb bit was OK this week (though I think we got the optimum amount of exposure to Kevin Hart - much more and I think he'd have gotten tedious, fast).

All-in-all a very watchable show that showed signs of promise for the current format to actually be successful.

It's definitely getting better and I still think Matt is the best presenter, I just wish Evans would stop talking to us like we're children and stop fooking shouting!
