Why 2002 when it's been on since the 70's?

Facts....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...ode-branded-boring-and-badly-presented-by-fa/

The show drew 4.4 million viewers, with a peak of 4.7 million, while the last series with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May bowed out with 5.8 million viewers.

Evans said last week he would be ‘disappointed’ if the show attracted under 5 million viewers.

“If we had to guess about the number of viewers we are going to get on Sunday night, you have got to say you would be disappointed if it was under 5 million. Five million-plus would be great, after that it doesn’t matter,” he said.

23% of viewers at 8pm on a Sunday night ,when there was jack shit else on, how many of those just watched to see what it was like, the acid test will be in the coming weeks, to see if they have kept those viewers.

Let see if them numbers are the same in 3 weeks time Chris

Just out of interest, assuming it remains on Sundays at 8pm, these are the football matches Top Gear will be competing against:

Sunday 12th June - Germany vs Ukraine
Sunday 19th June - Switzerland vs France & Romania vs Albania
Sunday 26th June - Winner Group F vs Runner Up Group E (Portugal, Iceland, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Ireland)
Sunday 3rd July - Euro Quarter Final
Sunday 10th July - The Final

And that's just from the football

I would say most Top Gear fans are also football fans , so would watch the football and either Sky+ or watch Top Gear on iplayer later.

It's not getting cancelled. It runs in an uncompetitive Sunday night slot and is a major global success.

Shhhh. Let them get the anger-wanking out of their systems. They've been lubing up for it since Clarkson left anyway, and most of them could barely contain it for more than a minute!

Eventually they'll find some other cause celebre for middle aged white males who feel impotent and angry at the world for changing slightly. Or they'll simply combust in a ball of their own pent up rage-farts when they realise no one really cares that much about their OTT demands to cancel a popular global-show because they don't like it anymore. Either way, it's probably best to let them furiously tug each other off, Gamergate-style, for now...They've been waiting to for months, after all.

I just watched Extra Gear or whatever its called and its actually pretty good. The Chris Evans sections were as bad as the show itself, but only lasted about 30 seconds and the news section was a bit dull. But other than that it was actually perfectly watchable and reasonably interesting, massive improvement on the actual show itself.

Yeah thats it Mockney, everyone hated it because they changed it slightly (despite the fact they didn't change anything) and not because it was a steaming pile of shit.

You were moaning on here a minute in, pal. I think Mockney's got you pegged.

If they didn't change anything, how could it have been a steaming pile of shit in the opinion of Top Gear fans?

I didn't watch it, but I'm guessing because Top Gear has been a steaming pile of shit for years anyway?

I thought it would be blatantly obvious that I was having a joke?

How would it be blatantly obvious that you were having a joke when multiple people were doing the exact same thing at the same time, and many more had spent weeks, if not months, declaring and hoping that Top Gear would be shit without Clarkson and his clones?

Because calling for something to be cancelled before the credits have even started was so blatantly over the top? Christ, when I'm being flippant in future would you like me to make sure its accompanied by big flashing lights and a warning?

It was the same quality as the previous version. Pile of shit about covers its. Only without Jeremy Clarkson, so it's at least a nice pile of shit.

Did you actually watch it?

Yes, I watched the repeat last night. It was pretty dull, and certainly a downgrade on the peak Clarkson years, but also not particularly any worse than the shit Clarkson years (sans Specials)... It was a "meh" episode of Top Gear, probably on the poor side. Not the radioactive canned-AIDS a swath of very angry people on the internet have been trying to convince the world it was.

The fact there wasn't really much of a change only highlights just how ridiculous some of the reactions to it have been. Very, very clearly there was a significant set of viewers absolutely frothing at the mouth that this even existed in the first place, seemingly out of some bizarre anger at the BBC for daring to sack someone for perfectly legitimate reasons, and then having the gall to continue their own, hugely popular, global show without him.

This has been evident (if it wasn't already before) by the huge stream of bile directed specifically at Chris Evans, for nothing more than "hosting the show enthusiastically whilst not being Jeremy Clarkson/hosting the show enthusiastically whilst being Chris Evans/hosting the show whilst being Chris Evans trying, enthusiastically, to be Jeremy Clarkson"...All of which makes his subsequent defensiveness rather understandable in truth.

Especially as he's now even being hated on for trying to defend himself, and his show, from a one way stream of bile, as if the only correct course of action would've been to lie down in the dirt and die whilst a thousand sweaty anoraks call him a cnut in unison...All of which only helps to further paint Top Gear fans (or at least the militantly pro-Clarkson faction of Top Gear fans) as the same kind of over-entitled, unself-aware, crusading mentalist types as Gamergaters, or that weird section of United fans who wanted us to lose the cup final under LVG.

It's a lighthearted TV show about cars, lads. Give your heads a wobble.

Light entertainment just got heavy.

My favorite pro-Jezza loonies are the ones who try and paint his sacking as a heinous, license fee crime on a par with Saville-gate... Thus managing to be simultaneously angry at the BBC for both indulging and failing to indulge highly paid stars.

Being flippant? You jumped at the chance to disagree with Mockney's comment despite it basically being a tongue-in-cheek analysis of the way certain sub-sections of Top Gear fans have behaved since Clarkson got fired and the reboot announced. A comment that wasn't even a response to you.

If you don't want to be tarnished with the Clarkson Corp. brush then don't bloody act like one of the mindless lunatics that blindly follows him.

Chris Evans grates. The rest were meh.

Let's be honest though, it's only the specials that were worth it. Seeing three idiots bumble their way through different harsh countries was always really entertaining. Also seemed to have the most authenticity to them and it showcased the presenters different personalities and their comradeship the best.

As it happens I agree and I think 90% of the posters in this thread agree with you as well: Top Gear before it was cancelled was bad.

Maybe some people did want the show to fail, but the vast majority of the criticism its got in the wake off it being aired wasn't solely because of that, but, rather, because it was bad. Maybe people did go in with the expectations that it would be bad, but it lived up to those expectations. If people think Chris Evans was a shouty annoying cnut, its probably because he was being a shouty annoying cnut. Maybe people feared he would be? But can you blame people for the fact he lived up to those fears?

Maybe Top Gear was all the things people are saying about it now before Clarkson got sacked, too, and old Top Gear simply got more leniency, but that doesn't mean people should not call a spade a spade now.

God forbid we discuss things on a discussion board. Maybe you should cut my head off for my crimes?

WARNING POST SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY DO NOT BEHEAD

A+ Discussion

At least Evans, for all his faults, won't be exchanging shit wanna-be Wildean wit with Call Me Dave and his set this summer while the nation goes to Hell*.

*That's not a reference to England's performance at the Euros, BTW.

I actually didn't think Evans was that bad when he wasn't trying to be funny, loud or Clarkson which was about 3% of his screen time. I'm half expecting him to come out on the next show and say "I'm not a good guy, I'm not a bad guy. I'm the guy!"

Obviously it's not getting cancelled, and why would anyone actually want it to? Even if they don't like it.

Those tweets by Evans though - they're like the people claiming LvG's defense was decent because 'the stats say so'.

Yeah wanting it to fail is weird. Why not have the best of both worlds.

I find it amusing, but obvious, that some think the bad comments all come from people wanting Clarkson back. I'm sure a large percentage do to be fair, but I couldn't give a flying feck about that trio, they are back soon anyway, I just think the show was stale and is now stale with the wrong host and the writing seems worse than ever. But it's early days, so maybe I'm proven wrong and in which case I'll win because I want to like TG again.

Yeah, the show was majorly stale and I'd gone off the presenters quite a bit, although that could have been down to the overly scripted nature. Compared to the new ones though, despite it being obvious that it was previously scripted, at least it didn't sound like they were actually reading from a script. Plus they had the chemistry of being similar but with their own quirks, and seemingly being friends outside the show.

Top Gear had the chance to revive the whole thing but bottled it IMO. It'll still be something to stick on while doing something else if I'm in, but I won't be making sure I watch it and I'll probably moan about it if I do.
