Television Top Gear

This was just awful. Matt was decent and will grow in to the role, Chris Evans is among the most irritating people ever and they could 500 episodes of this and he'll never be good. I don't think I'll be watching any more while he's there.

The whole show felt really forced, they were trying too hard to be old TG. The challenges fell completely flat for me too, the scripting was so obvious. Clarkson's version was just as scripted but it at least felt genuine most of the time. The photo finish races were full of energy and thrilling, here it was just lame.

I just don't understand the stale thinking of some tv bosses. Why on earth did they give the gig to Evans, who has little charisma, little wit or likeability? Do these people still think, after all these years, that Evans is a zany, energetic and fresh-thinking guarantee of success? Incredible...

I like Evans on the radio at times, and I like TFI friday.

But on this it didn't work for me, his voice was so grating it made it almost a pleasure to listen to MLB. The Chris Evans humour moments taking the piss out of the old show and the press stories were done to the point of arrogance and fell flat, but most of all I think it's the writing that seemed to have taken the biggest hit.

Even the more scripted scenes seemed more obvious than ever, and they were hardly unnoticeable in the old show.

Obviously they had to keep the old format to some degree, but the changes here were just for the sake of it and failed. Overall sticking Evans out front was one of many mistakes, and at least the other aspects can improve. I just don't think he'll ever truly work in this.

I mean, the biggest problem for me was his voice. I could barely understand what he was saying. The pitch of his voice seemed to blur into the whine of the cars he was driving.

But can we talk about the "taking the piss out of the old show"... We are watching top gear. Which means we probably like top gear. So why is he taking the piss out of top gear?!?!?

Le Blanc just pulls his own sections off better because hes a real actor. The whole thing was pretty horrible.

I feel bad for the audience, some of them looked confused/awkward at times. They tried really hard but it's just not very ineteresting.

If there was one or two well written quips, that would have been amusing at least.

But they started with one, ended with one, and had a few in the middle and none were even mildly amusing. Just obvious and made even worse by the "look at me being cheeky!" delivery.

How the bugger could they fail to improve on a jumped-the-shark show featuring Robin Reliants attached to space shuttles, with three presenters whose promo pix look like a Vic n' Bob parody of tramps caught sleeping through a hurricane in an Asda George outlet? I mean, look at the bloody state of 'em. So lazily phoned-in was the show that they couldn't even be arsed to change out of their comfy slippers:

As sure a predictor of success as Rafa's facts.

Yeah, because everyone tuned in just to see the Chris Evans show.

Nothing to do with the drama around what when on and curiosity. Let's see how long it keeps people tuned in for. I doubt come next sunday I'll remember it's on, I'm not really bothered about whether I catch it or not.

 Those tweets! What a cringe-worthy feckboy!

Keep telling yourself it's all ok Chris, as you rock back and forth.

I just watched the opening 20 minutes and it was really terrible. The intro was really bad, why on earth is he trying to be Clarkson?
And "the wing" thing, I swear Evans thinks that spoiler alone makes that Viper handle. And he calls Joey buddy. Really bad.

Will give it a chance, but Evans is definitely not for this show, IMO.

And I can't see this thread for some reason.

Also I've just checked the figures, the first ep of last season got 2m more viewers and was directly up against Call the Midwife (hence the lower audience share).

Talk about fudging the numbers.

I am just watching the intro now...

"Welcome to Top Gear with our all new improve audience"
*Audience cheers and claps like a bunch of retards*
*Chris Evans elongates his words, trying to do his Clarkson impression*

And with those tweets he's also drawn everyone to a single place to provide their feedback and everyone can see now the show hasn't gone down well.

As somebody who watched pretty much every single episode of the new Top Gear format, I have to say this was terrible for a number of reasons.

  • The challenge (Blackpool) was extremely dull.
  • Genuinely reminded me of the Top Gear USA version.
  • He was literally trying to sound like Clarkson AND shouting. I almost thought it was a joke in itself. I noticed some of it was just a dull voice over, there were rumours about him not being as good at presenting whilst driving.
  • The thing that made it work with the other 3 was the camaraderie - there wasn't any on show but fair enough that may need time, it should've been thought about though as part of the selection.
  • The hilarious thing is I thought Evans would be fine with the experience of TFI but he was worse than LeBlanc who didn't flop as much as I thought he would've.
  • Poor guests as limited time for two people and a very scripted poor gag with one of them not even a car owner!

I usually tune in on Sunday for it but not anymore, only on catch up. Looking forward to Clarkson's version, I can't wait for him to take the mick back. The most surprising thing is just how good Jeremy Clarkson looks now as a writer and presenter - we'll see if he comes good now he has a blank paper.

You can add the scripting was terrible, especially for the car chase, which was shit as well, but Sabine should have won coming out of the hanger.

As for chris evans he is just the British benitez whit the fact rant on twitter.

Didn't watch all of it, but watched about 30-40 minutes and honestly I don't think it's half as bad as people have said. It was alright to be honest.

We've kind of got the best of both worlds though. Top Gear now will try to make up the fact that they don't have the trio by spending a lot of money on the current lot. And then there is the Amazon Prime show, with the original trio which has even more money as well. So we still get to see the trio doing their stuff, but not it's on an even bigger budget.

Although, I do hope they do the same sort of stuff (the original trio). The best episodes on Top Gear were those in which they went on some random challenge in a random place with torn down cars.

What a junk of shit show,LB part is decent i guess, maybe because of him being part of Friends dunno.

Just watching it now and it is hideous.

Chris Evans is unbearable. He is constantly jumping around and screaming and it really pisses me off.

Whoever said it is like watching David Moyes was being too kind.

It is more like watching David Moyes taking a bath with LVG scrubbing his back and Manuel Pellegrini taking a shit on the toilet next to them.

Missed it, but from what people are saying, it's just like the old one, but people don't like the presenters as much.

And even more obviously contrived to the point it makes you sigh loudly at the time you're wasting watching it.

Its not completely useless. If you are struggling to fall asleep just put it on.

It was always going to be like this, Chris Evans is a really polarizing character, you think he is a complete and utter arsehole, or you just think he is an arsehole.

I imagine decent numbers for the first episode, it tails off across the season, and the show in its entirety is cancelled after this run.

People just tuned in to find out how shit it was. Can almost guarantee the views will drop over the course of the series.

Yep I did the same. I didn't realise it was on until people started bitching about it on Twatter.

The numbers are actually way down for a first episode, which is terrible given the interest generated by controversy. Evans' tweets are genuinely childish responses to criticism that I don't think has been particularily harsh.

It won't be cancelled though, it's a huge cash cow world wide.

I expect viewing to slip rapidly after the third/fourth episode. How many are in a series?

I was pleasantly surprised by Matt Le Blanc, thought his Ariel Nomad section was quite good. Evans was awful in the studio bits though im sure he was excited to present his first Top Gear n'all but all that shouting was over the top. My missus said she's not watching it anymore because of him

I thought he sounded the most like he was reading off a script, both in the voice over and general talking on screen, which is odd considering he's an actor. Likeable guy, but I'm not convinced he has enough personality to keep it interesting.
