Television Top Gear

Sigh another boring episode. This used to be my favourite thing on TV. its quickly becoming the worst. Just keep watching in hopes now to see the Ferrari/McLaren/Porsche battle. I used to laugh like a teenage girl watching this show. They need fresh presenters with fresh ideas.

Honestly no idea how you thought that was boring, the Hammond bits were most probably scripted but funny when he loses the rag. The two pick ups were class and Gillian Anderson is fecking sexy. Decent episode in my opinion

It isn't funny because it just doesn't feel spontaneous, especially hammond. Everything he says feels like an over acted B grade movie scene. Go back and watch a few of the older episodes, even though I know they were scripted, the banter still felt quite natural.

You say the pick ups were class but other than Their BHP/Torque figures and price, what did we actually learn? The Ford has a blinding light and thats about it.

Though I still love the production of this series, some of the shots with the cars are just brilliant.

People still watch it because its still fairly entertaining and fun even though its pretty shit at the same time.

The scripted 'spontaneity' though is what turned me from a regular viewer to just catching it if it happens to be on. Like Krits says above, Hammond is the worst at it.

What a crock of shit. I thought the season has been weak because of too many power tests given to Hammond but even Clarkson's review this week was crap. Don't get me started on the pickups.

It's car porn interspersed with hammed up arsehole-ishness. That obviously strikes a chord. People also watch so they can see who/what goes fast around the track that particular week.

It's not a great show but it's the only watercooler TV that doesn't involve singing/dancing/baking.

No way does it need fresh presenters. It'd be shit without those three and especially without Clarkson.

It needs something though but not that. They should do more of the 'challenge' type episodes. I know they probably drain the budget but episodes like the Vietnam, Bolivia, Polar, US specials are just epic. Shit like making ambulances, hover boats and saving Hammond in the Rockies aren't.

The BMW piece a few weeks back with Jeremy was pretty good but other than that I'm struggling to think of the last time I enjoyed one of the pieces dedicated to cars. Probably that old jag piece with the overblown Britishness. I even remember his lines about how it wouldn't roll over to Barcelona or wave Sebastian Vettel by  That must've been 4-5 years ago now.

I haven't watched in years but I've always thought the show at it's best was with very simply concepts. The highlights for me where the small challenges that were blown up, the one where Jeremy had to get to Scotland and back on a tank of petrol or the one with the race to the Strip club in Slough. The show from the little bit's I've seen seems to have turned into itself and become a parody of itself.

Although it's being going so long you can't blame them for falling into the trap of trying to go bigger and louder every year.

I agree, though I still watch it. More cars, less scripting and less "banter" - especially from Hammond - would all be welcome improvements.

I think one of my favourite episodes ever was the one where the Stig left London in a kit car and had to race to Knockhill. Meanwhile, Clarkson, May and Hammond were already at Knockhill, but had to build the kit car. Absolutely superb.

Rescuing Hammond in the mountains could have been done so much better this week. The show still has moments of brilliance though - the Australia episode this series was excellent.

You also get the impression James May is getting more and more embarrassed. He will be the first to walk away.
I heard rumours a few months ago that he was being replaced, no idea how true that is though.

The only way I see the presenters changing is Clarkson getting sacked or the format getting stale (I just can't see that happening anytime soon with the wider audience). Remember that BBC Worldwide bought Clarkson's rights for the Top Gear brand. They get 100% of it's profits and it is rumoured to be one of their best for that - hence it isn't just a car show anymore it's an entertainment show that goes around the world.

How much is Clarkson worth, as a matter of interest? I bet he's made an absolute fortune from this show.
I don't know for sure without googling, but he will be easily worth £20mil + I think. He has had a load of books and Dvd's in his career too, and I bet he get's paid a crapload by the BBC per season.

I think i read a few years ago he was on £2m a season with the other two just under £1m. Sufficient to say his net worth must be high

I would imagine in recent years that will be almost doubled. Like somebody previously said Top Gear is BBC's biggest selling show to foreign TV, I think he would have negotiated a nice little pay day.

Probably on a big salary for TG, plus books, newspaper colums, DVD's, appearances and cameos.

I know he's on significantly more than the other two.

He owned 50% of Top Gear a couple of years ago, I'd imagine he got tens of millions for that.

He's part of the chipping norton crew, so you can rest assured very wealthy indeed.

That jag looks great not keen on colour though a white or black version and it would be beautiful

Hope we get a good episode tonight for a change.

When they were introducing that Hammond thing he said he was going to Humberside, and that clearly wasn't Humberside. What am I missing?

They seem to be doing one silly/comedy episode then one serious/car show episode. Catering for everyone but you know the old farts will be moaning again next week.

Would prefer it if they use customer spec cars. There was something in a local paper about a guy owning all three, BBC should give him a call.

They're not gonna take the risk of pissing them off, and they said any owner who did that they'd not sell them any more cars. You're right though.

Yea, I wanna drive that road.

Tbh that rally thing didn't half look like a blast, I'd love a go at that, the power in those cars is astronomical.

Was quite a refreshing episode from what I saw (missed the rally bit).
MX5 bit was decent, even if it did seem like they were trying really hard to put something normal in there.
Hammond actually talking about it off the cuff was a lot more preferable than Hammond the scripted idiotic buffoon overdoing his silly voice.

Also that Jag was stunning. A perfect car.

They should just revert to giving those guys a couple of bucks to buy some crappy cars, then film then while despairing with them. That was tv brilliance. Modern Top Gear is a scripted shadow of what it once was. I don't want another car having "rolled over" off camera, I want to see them as three blokes and mates fooling around with a bunch of 2nd hand Ladas for under 400 pound and trying to drive them from London to Edinburgh...

The problem I feel with the show is that they are trying TOO hard to make it funny. Half the time if they left it alone, it might just be funny by itself without the need for scripted nonsense. Last week the Hammond rescue could have been really interesting but they toyed with it far too much that it became dull and predictable.

The jag is gorgeous, just as powerful and good looking as some of the bigger rivals out there. Surprised Clarkson moaned about it being noisy, but then I guess he is getting a little older and prefers "comfort".

The Jaguar Low Drag Coupe is probably the most beautiful car I've ever seen. Anyone got a spare 800k lying around?
