Top 4 race 2016/17

People ruling us out of top 4 need to rethink. One weekend like this changes the whole situation and there is more than half a season left. Anything can happen really.

Agree. People are being far too negative

Still so long to go. I can see Liverpool going on a bad run at some point in the second half of the season. City are starting to show signs of unrest and United are starting to look a lot better. I can see United improving a lot February onwards too. Not done yet

lol at City fans.

When they lost it is the refs fault. When Utd win it is a biased ref.

Theyre literally unbearable.

No offence, but that has been the mantra of United fans in every thread about Arsenal as well.

As for the thread, I can't see United coming 4th. 5th at best, I can't see the top four teams at present going on a massive calamitous run. United need to score a lot of goals, you can't get away with 1-0 anymore. Hence your recent drawn games.

Well you have City in the next two games, and City play Liverpool on the 31st. Lets say we do go on a run over Xmas and win our games...City are more than capable of dropping points in those fixtures, would you not agree?

I can see at least 2 of that top 4 going on a run of bad results personally. But to each their own.

I'm not saying I definitely think United will take advantage and get in there, but I do think if United continue to improve into the second half of the season, they'll have an excellent chance

EDIT: misread your can't as a can

Points wise we are still in it, but we have to make get a consistency going! Lose or draw to Crystal Palace then we effectively undo our result today. I don't question whether the opportunity will present itself, IE that we still have time and games, it's about whether we have the ability to capitalise on others dropping points.

So far we have shown no such thing. Let's hope we can build some real confidence over the festive period.

Win the next two before I start believing. We've been here too many times for me to get my hopes up.

Really? We could have potentially been 12 points of 4th after this weekend, now it's 6.
When you put it like that is shows what a fantastic weekend it was for us.

We're 6 points off 4th, 7 off 3rd. Hardly requires a "calamitous run", considering there's more than half a season to go.

As for your second point, yes, we do. Spurs need to score more too. And City and Liverpool need to concede a lot less. It's still pretty early to say United will finish 5th at best.

One weekend like this means nothing. We need a few. Drop points at Palace and we're back to square one.

One weekend likes this changes nothing
We were a Fellaini feckup away from having a better weekend last week?
Not exactly rare unicorns is it? The only reason it looks as if it is rare is due to not being able to finish our dinner and letting teams above us off the hook

You need to start stringing 4/5 wins together first in my opinion. We've seen plenty of false dawns in the past.

This.

Too many getting carried away indeed. Pool fans have had smiles and fist pumps 6/7 weekend in a row with Utd results. That's how many you need to get just on par.

As for today. Thanks for beating Spurs and making our result against West Ham not seem so bad.

Our crappy goal difference basically puts us 7 points off 4th atm. But yeah, it could be back on. Possibly :p

It is coming imo! The difference with those false dawns in the past is we played absolutely crap for ages, then sprung a great result and everyone thought we'd turned a corner. Where as this time we have been playing well for a while now and have been very unlucky. We've needed confidence to close out games, which today we did and will hopefully go a long way towards setting up a good run of results.

Worrying about Spurs are we? United are only 3 behind Spurs yet you seem to dismiss us.

Sure but I'm just saying 12 points would have been near impossible. I'm not saying it will be easy but it's definitely plausible at this point. That's what kind of a difference one weekend can make.

Fixtures for top 6 over the next five games. Shame Everton are in such bad form.

Wait, Liverpool are no longer going for the title? Awesome stuff.

Exactly, our win today is not a surprise. It has been coming a long way. Win at West ham last week and we're 4 points of right now.

Not dismissing you, putting your result today into perspective for us.
It's the first weekend of December. There is no perspective, people treating every result over the last month as if it's the run in is ridiculous.
6 points is nothing at this stage no matter where you look at the table

Quotes from a single Pool fan on here and you have a point. If you had that fear on your own terms then we're flattered. :)
It was based on your football this season. Genuinely looked like you could threaten to be the team to beat this season. Great to know that's not happening nor is even on the fans minds at all. Nice of Chelsea to trample all over it too.

Yes they are, but then again are so are you against lesser teams as you have demonstrated all season.

You can look at it both ways, you're only 6 points off, but even a draw might end up being 8 points. A loss would be 9 points and you'd back to square one. Had you been scoring freely I'd agreed with you, but scrapping a goal each game and hanging onto a one-goal lead will not take you far. A litany of drawn games for United proves my point. A good run of wins and I will agree with you, a scrappy 1-0 win is all that is, a single win.

I hope I don't sound like an arrogant Arsenal fan, I am far from it. Its just my opinion as an outsider and I might be completely wrong but time will tell!

You missed what I posted clearly. "I said....lets say United have agood Xmas and go on a run of games". Ok, now you have that hypothetical situation in your head (and it could very happen considering how we have been playing), remake your judgement on no one in the top 4 dropping too many points for United to catch them.

Insane post.
Liverpool have just lost and drawn, which is hardly a calamitous run, yet it's opened that door up to us a little.

City or Liverpool could quite easily not win for a couple of games while we do, and then it's all square,

When top 4 was getting 9/10 points away, THAT was time it looked over, but now, it's re-opened.

And unless I've missed something, we did exactly that 1-0 today, and I wouldn't call it getting away, could easily have been a 3-0 job. As could at least 3 of the last 4 homes. With the game against you probably should have being a 1 or 2-0 job

if we can get that 6/7 down slightly before we play Sunderland and MBoro at home back to back, things will really be looking up

Then flattery it is. Thanks. ;)

Very well done. You can do simple arithmetic.

I just did some calculations and the equation works both ways. A draw or defeat for a team above us, coupled with a United win leaves us just 4 or 3 points behind.

Crazy isn't it this world of numbers and possibilities?
