Toni Kroos | Madridista

Could Kross be deployed as a box-to-box midfielder? If van Gaal is to implement his preferred three man midfield I can see Mata, Kagawa, or Rooney as the number ten. With a holding player and a box-to-box midfielder accompanying one of them.

That's the way I see it. Try and get one of Kroos/Fabregas and then sign someone defensively competent to play alongside them (with Mata playing in front of them).

We'd look so much better if we did that the change would be unbelievable.

This is happening as well. Reckon both him and Shaw will be announced before the World Cup.

The best thing that could have happened to give this transfer any real chance at all was probably Van Gaal coming here.
So the chances have certainly increased.

We'll just have to wait and see really.

Don't understand the obsession with Fabregas. Reminds me of Rooney. Still living from the glory of being world class a few years ago. I mean of course I'd take him and he would improve us dramatically, but I'd rather have Kroos or Gündogan than him as our future 8.

Don't get me wrong I still think Fabregas is a fantastic player, just never hit the heights that we expected him, like Rooney.

Rooney is a good analogy for your thoughts on Fabregas. Because you're wrong about both. :)

I can't believe for a second we'll pull of signing a player of his quality

I never understood the point of being an anonymous source for something like this and talking to journalists. If you worked for United, what good could come out of speaking to the press and saying you're confident a deal will go through? What's there to gain? Only way I could see it making sense is if it were someone trying to undermine Woodward, to make it look like a deal that was supposedly a done deal fell apart under his watch.

Tell somebody back in 2010, that in 4 years Rooney isn't a top5-10 player in the world and that Fabregas isn't even a key player for his team and they'd ask you if you're serious. Both had immense potential and both didn't deliver enough so far. It could change but the last 2 years have been lacking, from both players.

And yeah I'd prefer Gündogan over Fabregas. Gündogan was at a level for Dortmund that I haven't seen from Fabregas since 2010. His injury is worrying but I think he'll overcome it. This whole EPL proven is shit and the reason why average players like Young or Fellaini can fetch such a huge transfer fee.

There are anonymous sources all over the place in journalism. Its just one of many ways reporters get their information.

Now if we can just add Sanchez to the mix I'll be made up.

It would be just perfect! But he seems to be heading to Juve, but IMO he would be great for us. He picked the wrong the club, Barca don't match his style of play but we would be a better fit for him.

(If this is a genuine source talking to the journalist):
If it's a player, and the journalist has been given good inside info about future transfers and is able to pint an exclusive, he can return the favour by next time printing exactly what the player wants.
I think a good example of what a player can get by cultivating a journalist is Rooney's transfer sags(s).

If it's someone in the official hierarchy and this leak is from high--up, it's a similar sort of thing: they can then feed the papers stories to destabilise transfer targets, to suggest a huge influx of new players (or a warchest :P )to keep fans happy, to maybe get an errant player (demanding too much money?)in line by suggesting that the club would sell... whatever.

Either way, the journalist gains an exclusive, the leak gains the right to get the next story to match his needs.

Oh I get that, and in most cases, I understand that there's the whole quid pro quo aspect. But with transfers, what is the point of 'leaking' that a deal is close to done? But I guess doing something for someone always creates a debt to be paid later.

Fair points @berbatrick. I just hate the whole practice of playing games in the media. The Rooney stuff, with all of Stretford's lackeys, was the worst.

Nah he's not, Juve want to sign him and are being very vocal but I reckon a 25mill bid will get him.

1. Still is. I'm not having that argument here though. Or indeed anywhere on the Caf, since this place is completely unhinged about Rooney.

2. Still would be, if he played for a team that actually played him in his best position and allowed him freedom to do more than just ping five yard passes back and forth.

I still think he's a lifer at Bayern. They generally don't let these players leave.

They're the only club to be linked with him, I haven't seen us being linked with him at all, unfortunately. I would be shocked if he ends up here, as much as I want it to happen.

With Kroos, I kind of get the feeling that he is angling for a better deal at Bayern.

He might be when he knew that LvG will be manager for Manchester United. Since then everybody of the Bayern fans is pretty sure he will not go to Manchester United.

Since then even Schweinsteiger to Manchester United is more thinkable...

There's no value in leaking the information, but then again, it could just be leaked by someone at the club (a player, staff etc) who aren't vested in the transfer, but are interested in "spilling the beans" to someone they know as a means to consolidate their own credibility with a journalist.

As long as we set a date by were the deal has to be done by I don't mind us trying to sign him but for the love of god learn from the fabregas saga last summer.

1.
- Messi
- Ronaldo
- Suarez
- Aguero
- Iniesta
- Bale
- Ribery
- Robben
- Busquets
- Hazard/Reus/Silva/Toure/Zlatan

Now tell me that he is better than 5 players on this list.

2. Would. That's the key word, we don't know how good he'd be right now. Maybe many would say the same about Torres if he'd played for Barca and not for Chelsea? Both Fabregas and Rooney were once in a generation talents and simply didn't make enough out of it, so far.

Pay attention and you'll see that I highlighted top 10, not top 5. So I only have to tell you one player. I'm not going to though, because again, if you'd actually read my post...:

Fortunately, most human beings have deductive thinking and are able to work out how things might hypothetically work out. For example, Torres had already gone to shit in his last season at Liverpool, so someone with a brain between their ears might point that out if someone else was using his Liverpool form to make a claim about him still being brilliant. Whereas Fabregas went out of Arsenal as the best midfielder in the whole league, and a lot of people predicted that Barca would have to squeeze him into their side out of position and that he'd suffer for it.

You've just got to use the old noggin.

1. You can't count, I've given you 15 names to show that you're talking rubbish
2. Before Torres left, he was getting into a good form again, scoring 5 goals only in January. It was the Hodgson season, they were all rather shit like we were this season. The only thing people worried about when he left for Barcelona was, how long would it take for him to overtake Xavi, not that he can't even play his position in their system. So you condescending human being, use your apparently so well functioning brain and learn to tolerate other opinions without sounding like a dick.

Liverpool have as well plus we were supposedly sniffing around in January for him.

Seriously? Let's be fair, last season he wasn't even in top 5 players of our team while this season he wasn't in top 5 in EPL. Actually, I think that only on 2009-2010 he may have been on top 5 on the world, but now there are easily more than 5 strikers better than him (Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Suarez, Aguero, Lewandovski, RVP and probably others like Falcao and Cavani). Add then players from other positions.

You may be right that the Caf is very anti-Rooney but saying that Rooney is top 5-top 10 in the world is ridiculous. When is the last time he was actually top 5-top 10 in the league in the first place? A couple of years ago.

We've been confident on deals before. Thiago for instance - very, very similar reports back then. But even if we have a deal with him, Bayern might simply not want to sell even if he's only got a year remaining on his contract.
