He wants more money? Why should he be in a hurry to extend his contract? It's not like it's been a huge problem for months now. Alaba and Boateng extended a few weeks ago and had similar contracts. He'll sign a new contract before the next season starts, don't get your hopes up :).
Agreed :)

It does sound like a contract re-negotiation ploy, but you never know. If there's wide blue water between the sides; and Bayern regard Kroos as dispensible; and we offered them a truckload of money.. Worth a shot, anyway.

Would we go the extra mile money wise though? Hard to believe the 'value' and 'bargains' mentality doesn't still linger at the club.

Doubt it tbh. It's easy to bargain hunt from first place, but from 7th?

We don't have room for Reus now even though I think he's getable. We need Kroos though, but he's a lifer at Bayern.

---------RVP

-Mata---Rooney--Reus

it can work with two sitters behind them.

And what about the best young talent we have seen since Ronaldo? Januzaj is a first choice in this side now. If Rooney does leave then getting Reus would be fantastic.

I think we can fit him in.

Reus-----Rooney-----Mata

Hernandez

Januzaj-----Kagawa-----Welbeck

Ashley Young and Tony Valencia have made 42 appearances so far this season between them. If we signed Reus now after getting Mata, there will still be plenty of game time for young Januzaj.

His 18 he'll get plenty playing time even with those ahead of him. Plus long season and injuries i think we can afford 'sensible' rotation.

Nonsense. We should clearly be looking to have 1 good player for each position and an average squad player as backup.

The thought of trying to accommodate all those too class players is horrifying.

And if we had unlimited access to top players, that would be great. But having just bought one to strengthen an area which is actually one of our strongest, it would be slightly strange to go after Reus next for the same sort of area of the pitch (I know ideally Mata plays centrally and ideally Reus wide, but they'd be in competition with the same players in our team - Welbeck, Rooney, Januzaj, Kagawa etc).

Better to save the money to make a more decisive bid in the summer for people in the positions that actually need improvement - central midfield, RB and possibly CB. Someone like Reus' own team-mate (who actually looks the more achievable of the two given the shape of things at Dortmund at the moment), Gundogan.

Or Kroos, if there's anything in those rumours, though personally I just can't get my head around them. I've always thought of him as being the sort who'll never be pried away from his home club. Although I suppose those quotes from him earlier in the year don't quite fit that picture, so who knows.

I think out wings have been as desperate as our midfield personally.

When looking at who we have and who we should take forward, for me it looks like this:

Right: Mata, Januzaj
Left: Januzaj, Kagawa and Mata

3 players for two positions, one of which will be playing centrally quite often you'd imagine and the other will make his move their eventually.

I'd say bringing in a top quality winger is essential, especially one who will provide a completely different skillset and approach to the other three.

I think out wings have been as desperate as our midfield personally.

I can't agree. There have been form issues there but it's hard to see past the fact that the midfield has been declining in quality for five seasons or so, unaddressed, whereas the wings have suffered a period of inconsistent form lasting a maximum of a season and a half.

All positions aren't created equal. A team can perform with a superb central midfield and lacklustre wingers, but it's very hard for wingers to put in match-winning performances if the central midfielders are incompetent. They're reliant on the midfield in a way that isn't true vice versa. Personally, I feel that our 'problems' on the wing are temporary ones of form which have been compounded by the more serious (and worsening) long-term problem in central midfield.

There have been plenty of games this season when our wingers have been perfectly respectable. And don't forget that all Januzaj's best stuff has come from that position. It's just hard to remember that stuff if it happened in games which we lost because our overall performance was poor because our midfield had no control.

You can call it 'form issues' if you like, but theres no hiding from the fact that Young and Valencia are actually just shit.

I think they're both in need of major treatment personally, Januzaj's pretty much been the only bright spot on the wings this year and for a club that prides itself on them, that isn't good enough. I think Moyes' interview today was fairly clear evidence he's planning a fairly major remodelling of the side come summer, the biggest priority among which will obviously be centre mid - and the links to the likes of Vidal, Gundogan and Kroos are the kind of quality we need, even if the latter of the three is probably just a punt so we'd be prepared should his contract talks break down - but another top quality wide player, as Pexbo said, will be high on the agenda too I'd imagine.

Moyes obviously buying backups due to injuries from the boot camp training.

Can someone post the article please?

Manchester United are exploring whether they can sign either of the German internationals Toni Kroos or Marco Reus as David Moyes steps up his revamp of the club’s failing squad.

Juan Mata’s signing from Chelsea in a club-record £37 million deal was nearing formal completion last night after the Spaniard arrived at United’s Carrington training ground by helicopter to complete his medical. Wayne Rooney has also opened preliminary talks over a new contract worth £300,000 a week.

But Moyes does not want his overhaul to end there and he attended Borussia Monchengladbach’s home game against Kroos’s Bayern Munich on Friday evening. The United manager was escorted by Sascha Breese, who works for Sportstotal, headed by the agent Volker Struth.

The company represents both Kroos and Reus and sources have confirmed to Telegraph Sport that Moyes has registered United’s interest in both of the German internationals. Neither player is likely to be available this month, but United hope that one of Kroos or Reus can join this summer.

The club have also shown interest in Schalke’s Julian Draxler, but have ultimately decided that they are well-stocked in Draxler’s position.

The expectation is that the highly-rated left-sided attacker will join Arsenal, possibly even this week, for £37.8 million if his buy-out clause is met. Arsenal are in talks and hope to sign Draxler for a lower figure.

Bayern have so far failed to agree a new deal with Kroos, an elegant 24-year-old midfielder, who has less than 18 months left on his current deal. Unless he signs a new contract, he is likely to be sold in the summer.

Reus, also 24, has a £30 million release clause in his contract at Borussia Dortmund although it is only active in the summer of 2015.

United also admire Southampton’s Luke Shaw but are unlikely to bid for the left back this month unless he is made available. A move in the summer, when they will be rivalled by a host of Premier League clubs, is more likely.

Rooney’s new deal could be agreed sooner, with United having started talks with his representatives over a deal which would make him the highest-paid player in the league and keep him at Old Trafford until 2018.

The striker had previously indicated he had wanted to leave and join Chelsea but talks are now under way after Rooney indicated he would sign. He will be encouraged by United’s positive moves this month

Summary:
  • saw Moyes with Breese so likely to target Kroos or Reus, though neither is likely to be available until the summer
  • United interested in Draxler but have decided we're well stocked in his position so no point signing him
  • United like Luke Shaw but unlikely to bid for him this month unless he is made available. A move in the summer when Chelsea want him is more likely
  • Rooney deal could be agreed sooner

Dont draxler and reus play similar positions though? Doesnt make sense we are interested in one but feel well stocked for the other.

Not sure the best side in Europe agrees with you...

---------Mueller--------
Ribery----Kroos--Robben
--Martinez--Schweiny--

With these subs....

--------Mandzukic------
Pizarro--Goetze-Shaquiri
----Thiago---Hojberg---

And Lewandowski shows up in 5 months to this party :wenger:!!

And the point here is not to argue over who starts over who or if so-and-so is in the exact correct position... the point is to show how much flipping talent Bayern has and the fact that Pep has made it work.

Personally I would love that problem!!

Sarcasm, my love. Couldn't agree more.

I have seen Kroos play about three times, in one game he was terrible and for that reason, I'm out.

Between Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, Shinji Kagawa and Nani, our main set of wingers. We have 7 goals and 3 assists in 51 appearances.

Our wings are a bigger problem than our midfield.

if we sign reus then we'll have him, van persie, rooney ( i think he will sign a new deal), mata, and januzaj as first 5 choices for our front 4. the perfect time to have all 5 of them as well, as van persie is 31 and januzaj will be only 19 then. you just doesn't want to burn januzaj out by playing him every game and van persie surely needs some rest as well. a bit of a problem still for moyes but what a problem that would be.

I don't agree. I mean, don't get me wrong, our wings ARE a problem. But I think they're not as of concern as the CM positions. Basically I think the CM position is more vital in being able to control games and I hope we sign one solid CM, possibly 2 but only if we let go of 2 of our CM's.

I still hold out hope that Cleverley comes good, especially now we signed someone of Mata's caliber.

And I think we have a couple of CM's in our ranks who will be making the step up within the next couple if seasons.

It's baffling really. At one stage it looked like we had 3 of the best wingers in the country. Valencia was predictable but unstoppable, Nani was unbelievably productive and Young could come in, get goals and assists and change games. It may have only lasted a season but I genuinely thought they were the shit and would be for years. I actually agree with your statement now that it's the problem position, if it weren't for Januzaj it really would be a worry. They're only 26-28 so it's hard to work out what went wrong. It's not just Moyes' system as the decline set in during Fergie's last year.

Why are our youth players always included in our squad depth . Hojbjerg was twice subbed in for 5-10 minutes in games that were already decided and when our squad was drained through a lot of injuries. He's mainly part of our u23 team that's playing in the 4th league. Afaik he's not even playing for Denmark's nationalteam yet, he's only part of their U21 team.

Of course, I'm not denying our quality in depth. But it happened during the summer as well, every talented youth player who was once mentioned as a great prospect is seen as part of the squad to make the numbers look completely ridiculous.

Sorry guys, don't want to ruin your muppet fantasies, but right now we're playing a 4141 and our best line-up for the 3 CM positions so far is:

Kroos Thiago
--- Lahm ---

Neither Martinez nor Schweinsteiger looked as good in any of those 3 positions as those 3 did. They struggled with injuries, that might be a reason but neither is as natural a fit in midfield at the moment as they were in last season's 4231/424 system. Kroos isn't surplus, he's absolutely crucial and I'm sure he knows it and the club knows it. He'll get more money and he'll stay, don't get your hopes up, really.

If Schweini's contract was up in 18 months, I'd be much more worried about him leaving at the end of the season, yes. It's not though and we won't sell him, but feel free to try .

Stupid posts like this piss me off. So short sighted.
I saw that game too, and if you had watched closer you would have seen who was in the crowd. Brentden.
Ffs, if you saw him in the crowd scouting you, you'd not want to play well either
