Er, did you not see him playing against United?
Er, did you not read my full post my dear sir? I mention his performances against United. :)
Anyways, although he was not so good in the first leg and goodish in the second, I assumed that those two might be off days. For whatever reason. Regular watchers would have certainly observed a trend with him whether he really shines in the tough times or not. So asked for the opinion.

Kroos has been a top performer in the UCL for Bayern for about three years now really. Often steps it up in the bigger games.

He had excellent games, good games and average games for Bayern in the elimination rounds which is pretty normal I'd say. Best performances arguably against Real Madrid in the 2011/12 semis and Arsenal away this and last season.

Bottom line: he's got what it takes for the highest level, but he needs the right environment to shine. Either a hard-working, defensive sweeper behind him in a 4-2-3-1 or a fluid three-men midfield in a 4-3-3 formation. He's a specialist and not an all-round CM like Bastian Schweinsteiger whom you can throw into any team and get performances out of him. If you use him right though he'll perform even better than Schweinsteiger.

It'll be a sweet moment for Klopp when he brings Kroos to us and pinches one of Bayern's players.

How was Toni Kroos' relationship with Van Gaal? I read a Ribery quote saying that he would never want to work under Van Gaal again. But if Toni thinks highly of Van Gaal, that might help us bring him here.

Bayern won't let him go this summer if they value him as an important first team player, even if they have to let him go on a free next summer. They've got an all time great team at the peak of their powers at the moment, and they don't exactly come along every few years. So this is the time when when they have to win and get as much as possible out of them - especially in Europe.

so perhaps it depends where he wants to play?...
Probably no. He plays a lot of games in his prefered position at Bayern. I think he wants a better status and to be the main man. He would get it in loads here. ;)

Regarding his position, I think it would be natural if he prefers the more attacking positions on the pitch. The difference in influence that he has while playing deep as a holding midfielder against while he is playing ahead of the holding midfielder is immense. You just have to compare the games he played in the CL versus us (as a deep holding midfielder) and against Arsenal at the Emirates(as the creative midfielder playing ahead of the holding midfield player). The article you posted is indeed very interesting. But it tends to say that he needs to be played almost as an CAM/no.10. I think what Kroos wants is to be able to express his creativity and attacking instincts. That I don't think necessarily depends on him playing AM. I think he can easily fit in a midfield two with us in a 4-2-3-1 and be the more playmaking central midfielder. He would definitely need a strong fast sound DM to play alongside him. That would buy him the creative freedom. But as the article says and after seeing him utilised as a holding midfielder by Guardiola in some of the games, we can be assured of him being defensively sound as well.

I certainly felt that we couldn't have attracted the best players with Moyes at the helm. As people have said several times, he is far behind the times in terms of tactics and style of play. So I think a player like Kroos would want to work more with a coach like Van Gaal. The article you posted suggests that Kroos had a hard time and couldn't play according to Van Gaal's vision. But there certainly is no mention of the relationship going bad. Maybe this time around, Van Gaal would play Kroos in his favoured position. :)

If you guys sign Luis van Gaal as your next coach, I doubt there's going to be silly spending. He despises expensive transfers and always looks at the youth academy as well as under-performing players first. He prides himself in promoting youth, decreasing the wage bill and creating value from which the club profits long after he's gone.

Signing several players for € 30-50m on high wages would contradict what I know about him and his philosophy. On the other hand he's used to working with a Director of Football, so maybe we'll see something new from LvG in the more influential position of manager at Man'Utd. It certainly would be very interesting.

I think we've blown the whole Kroos thing now. From what I understand he was looking forward to working with a coach of Moyes' calibre.

If you're right, that's a big tick next to his name for me. This hysterical nonsense about us needing to sell off half the squad is ridiculous. Van Gaal would surely recognise the need for a bit of serious expenditure in midfield and at full-back, but if he avoided hacking the squad apart too much aside from that he'd be doing the right thing by my book. And looking to our youngsters is going to pay serious dividends for whichever manager has the balls to do it.

Funnily Van Gaal always said that in his opinion Kroos will be a DM. Rated him very highly.

It would have been very interesting to see Kroos under Louis van Gaal in 09/10, but the whole Klinsmann fiasco led to the Leverkusen loan deal, which is why Kroos had a hard time adapting to the Dutchman's playing stile in the beginning of 10/11 season.

But you're obviously right, LvG rated him highly and planned to make him the heir of Mark van Bommel alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Glazers must be salivating at this.

This changes a lot, there was no chance of Kroos coming to play under Moyes. With LvG here there might be a slight chance to get him if Bayern tell him they don't want him.

He's looked really good tonight, despite Bayern losing atm. His touch, control and passing have been excellent. He's stoodout far more in these 45 minutes then he did in the two matches against us.

I know its a really lazy comparison, but there are definatley shades of a younger Scholes, albeit better defensively from what I've seen.

He's probably touched the ball more times than the entire Madrid front 6. But yeah, I think he's been class tonight regardless of meaningless stats like that. Absolutely crisp in the pass and really does remind me of Scholes..if anything he reminds me of an older Scholes who after the eye injury became even better at moving the ball around.

I would say a Scholes of around 06/07, when he still had a reasonable amount of mobility.

I starting to really hate those passing statistics, just like possession. It's meaningless how often someone passes the ball, the point is to turn passes into chances. Of course the system itself was flawed and this is just a result, but you can see that Kroos played not a single pass into the opposing box. That's what I miss from Kroos: The courage to try something, to provide a spark.

I don't think Pep used him well tonight, or against us. Playing him too deep. With Lahm and Schweinsteiger partnering him in midfield, you'd assume he'd be in the most advanced position, but it was the complete opposite. He's the most penetrative of the three. Needs to be further up the pitch where he can afflict some damage on the opposition.

I didn't think many of his passes were that incisive. He benefited from Madrid conceding position outside the final third for large parts of the game.

The word "penentrative" never comes to mind when I think about him, he always seems to prefer the safe pass to the risky through ball. His position is alright as it is, the problem is that it just doesn't work with Schweinsteiger and Lahm who both have a similar approach to passing. We need one guy who's different, othewise you get the dull, static offensive no-show we produced tonight. With Thiago injured, that has to be Müller.

that's a lot to do with how Pep asks him to play though.

Did anyone see the pass he played to Robben in the first half? 60 yarder right on the money

His role in the team is very strange right now. He starts higher up the pitch than Schweinsteiger and Lahm but then drops deeper than both of them. I feel playing this way robs him of too many of his strength a player with a shot on him like he has is who you want at the edge of the penalty area and not as the deepest midfielder.

You can't pass to people if they aren't breaking into the box. The flaw was tactical...not because of the player.

He does have a tendency to play the simpler passes more often but last season for example, his pinpoint accuracy was often key to their more incisive play rather than pinging it about pointlessly outside the box.

You can surely see the quality he has. Switch him out for Xabi and that ball is falling at Ronaldo or Di Maria's foot on the break at ease.

Would probably be my 5th choice or so. Personally, I hope our next manager has a hard on for Kovacic, as I don't think he made it onto Moyes' iPad.

He use to be far more penetrative when he played further up the field. Was great in the semi against Madrid 2 years ago further up the pitch.

With the other players we have, we don't need that anyway, we need somebody who can control the game.

Looked class tonight, his cross field balls are second to none and his energy in the middle is fantastic.

Woodward was at the game KroOn
