This post shows how much our reputation has fallen by our antics in the transfer market post Ronaldo and has finally started to show on the pitch as well this season. Really hope we get back to our rightful place in the football pyramid soon. We're now being looked at as another club looking to blow their owner's money, while we are the exact opposite of that.
That's not what I meant, it's just, the two Spanish Giants are different, always were. You could be on top of Europe, pay top wages and they still would be attractive enough to get your players. No other club at the peak of their powers was comparable, not Milan, Juve, United or Bayern.

TBH we didn't match the allure of Real Madrid even in the pre-Ronaldo or pre-Glazer days. They are a rule unto themselves.

Nothing is permanent, we were reaching a stage where we were close to matching Real's allure right before the Glazer takeover, but that's for a separate thread. It's the second part of the sentence that worried me, how he just dismissed United like we are some no mark nouveau rich club waiting to throw the owner's money around like a City or a PSG.

Yeah, I know. You people are probably one of the strongest teams I have ever seen and even then if Real or Barcelona came, you'd face a fight to hold on to most of your players, while the opposite is certainly never true how so ever much either of the two may be struggling on the pitch. Hell, we lost Ronaldo when Real were at one of their lowest points in the past decade and we were at one of our highest. Those two clubs are a rule onto themselves. It's actually the second part of your post which worried me, and which I reckon is an opinion held by vast majority of European fans at the moment.

Don't do this to yourself boys. It's the hope that kills you.

It's the hope that keeps us alive and well, will you be there a-holding my hand I’ll keep you by my side with my superhuman might.

FFS, that Ronaldo video, now I'm dreaming of him in a United shirt as well....

United's wage bill was higher than Bayern's last season, so it's kinda obvious that you're offering more money to your players? Not sure what's so worrying about stating the obvious?

Mate I know it hurts and we all love United but we have to be objective here. Real Madrid's status as the greatest club in football is set in stone. It just is and it probably won't change even in the next 100 years. We just can't match their footballing history - 32 league titles, 9 European cups, 18 spanish fa cups or the players that they've had including multiple Ballon D'Or + World player of the year winners right from the 1950s - Di Stefano, Kopa, Puskas, Gento, Amancio, Butragueno, Sanzhez, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Raul, Carlos, Casillas, or their glamour. No shame in that, I believe by the 2000s start we were maybe the 2nd most attractive club for most football players. But not even close to Real Madrid, never.

We can plunder Everton if we want. Rest assured that Barcelona or Real wont touch that 'talent' even with a barge pole.

Gibbo's triumphant return? :D

Imagine signing Thiago last summer then Kroos this summer. How many years would our midfield be set for then? That'd be worth 300k pounds a week!

Sigh :(

Don't fret about it, maybe I misread the tone of your post, but I have been hearing statements like this since January from a lot of people. Your statement was almost like the only thing United can offer is more money. We are one of the biggest clubs in the world with a global fan base as big as (if not bigger than) any club in the world.

Probably not in our lifetime  We're going in the wrong direction at the moment though.

Honestly I think we will sign some big stars next year. There encouraging signs that finally United had to decided to abandon the 'value' strategy and compete for the best (Mata signing and Rooney's extension of contract)

I think our recruitment policy has played a part in the attractiveness thing. Comes back to my 'United Way' thesis almost. You said there was a period where we were close to matching the allure of the Spanish. But during that period, we didn't necessarily go after the world's best, we have a specific recruitment policy.

I think the fact that Real have historically targeted the world's best helps them get the world's best. I think the period in which we had Ronaldo at the club alone was one where we were an attractive club. Players want to play with, or follow world stars.

I read that Kroos was visibly angry again on the bench today? Has to be off in the summer.

Don't know if true, the cameras didn't show his reaction, but if he keeps moaning and bitching about being substituted after bad performances, he can go wherever he pleases.

Christ, he wasn't angry.

He just sat there lifelessly dreaming of tearing the Premier League apart with a United badge on his chest.

Yeah, Thiago is more suited to Pep's style and has more potential as well I think. Probably at a similar level already. We'll gladly take your backup squad players you have no use for

At the press conference, he was asked if he would choose a team not playing in the CL, he replied "I will consider everything. IF I should leave". (Clever question by Jan Aage Fjortoft)

Also adds "I've noticed that a lot is being written. There is not much new. No decision has been made, it was not agreed. This will remain so until the summer, then a decision will be made. It is no secret that the Premier League is an interesting league."

I think we are genuinely his first option should he leave, however I think he is also clearly forcing Bayern's hand hard in the media and I can't see then not offering what he wants when all is said and done.

Yep, clearly using the interest from us to negotiate a better deal with Bayern, hence why he said what he said in public.

City and Chelsea will both be in for him if he is by any chance leaving. I don't think we've got a chance.

As people have said though, even if he was driven by money, City/Chelsea can offer more than we can. Unless we offer him insane money that destroys our wage structure.

And that is also assuming that 'kpsundayworld' is as informed by Kroos' motivations as he seems to think he is by stating the 'only reason he will join Man United is for money'. My personal guess is that he isn't.

Money is not the only motivation to join United. That's nonsense.

He's won it all already at Bayern and is a known admirer of the Premier League. His brother has come out and declared his love for United so it's not a huge stretch to think he might have grown up with a similar attraction. Moyes will have made him aware of other players that feature in his project so the thought of being involved in a new era for United and taking on Paul Scholes mantle is surely attractive to any player.

It's a logical assumption though, no? What can United offer that Bayern can't? He may very well want to play outside Germany, I don't claim to know what his intentions are, but I personally can't see him choosing United aside from us offering him more money. That's just me though.

Of the top of my head, we'll make him the key man in our midfield and the chance to play in the Premier League. Obviously, money will be the main motivation but if he joins United, you can be sure that some other club would probably have been willing to better what we will ultimately offer him, so it won't solely be for the money.

See @Pexbo post above yours, basically said what I think. United are a great club, quite simple. I doubt he'd rather play for Everton over us if they finish 4th and we finsh 5th this year.

I'm as depressed as the next posted about how shit we have been, but a lot of people are being excessive with the whole 'why would anyone want to play for United?' stuff.

If he leaves Bayern it will obviously be for increased money and status. That isn't the same as saying it's the only thing we can offer though.

Manchester United can offer the chance to play for Manchester United. It's unique. Just in the same way Bayern Munich is a unique, powerful club, as is Barcelona and Real Madrid.

It's not about comparing the squads and their potential for success. All clubs have unique attractions and United are a hugely attractive club to play for.

I agree with this, but it's not excessive when it's Bayern we're talking about here. If Kroos was playing for Leverkusen or something, then it's a different story. He's playing for the strongest team in Europe under one of the best managers in the world. If he's aspiring to be one of the best in the world, developing under Pep Guardiola is surely the way to go?

In the same way that you say he might be attracted to playing for Manchester United, Bayern are also a huge club to play for, so unless he's a fan of United, if he does leave Bayern, money will be his main reason. Or maybe I'm a cynic like that and don't believe in the romantic notion of playing for a club because of their history.

Agreed, but we can't exactly speculate about him joining Bayern now can we? The question is where would he go should he decide to leave Bayern. People are saying, 'surely other clubs will just offer more than us, and if they do, why would he possibly want to join us?'.

That's very different from your point above about Bayern being a great club. It's about 'right, I'm leaving a great club, what other great clubs are out there?'. Manchester United is very relevant in that conversation.

Not really, imo. Pretty sure it feels different, if you're injured and miss the last 2 months of a treble winning season. Sure, he was part of the squad and played brilliantly until his injury, but I wouldn't be surprised if he feels disappointed about his individual contribution to the titles last season. Of course it was bad luck and not his fault, but he should be ambitous enough to want to play a part in a successful CL final before he leaves this team now.

Ah, we're discussing different things then. :) I thought your original post had to do with 'why he would leave Bayern' and not which club he'll choose IF he leaves.

To be honest, I'm just being cynical on purpose as I'm still feeling the pain from the Thiago saga. It's the hope that kills you.

Likewise. I am not particularly optimistic at this stage either, but more on the basis that I'm not convinced he would leave as opposed to the fact I think he'll rather join Notts County ahead of us.

Thiago also burnt me. I had followed his career since he was in Barcelona's academy/B team and was a great admirer of his.

Even if money was the only motivation to join United then we're in with a great chance of signing him. Every cnut in the game is primarily motivated by money. It just so happens that most of them are able to get the most money by signing for clubs that are also likely to be successful. This isn't always the case, though, but hasn't stopped the likes of PSG signing whoever they want.
