Tom Cleverley | 2012-14 Performances

It's surprising that if Cleverley 'needs a game' the first teams next three effective dead rubbers aren't when he'd be given a run out.

I don't think he's just fallen out of favour though. He faded in a few games, but that's all. He was having a very good season before that imo. Someone mentioned off field issues and I wouldn't find that hard to believe tbh. This could just be dipping his toe back in the water before Chelsea?

It's got to be a some kind of fitness problem with him. I just don't see what could possibly go on between himself and Fergie that would cause him to be dropped like this. There's also been nothing in the media about a dispute.

I think he's being knocked down a peg or two, just the way I'm reading the situation.

All rather strange, was there anything to those rumours about him having issues in his personal life? Might explain it?

I reckon it was burn out, his performances suffered and he was given an extended break, now he's being eased back in with an u21s match.

I agree. It's this simple.

Although you'll find people on here who think it's nonsense and that SAF must be senile for dropping him...

I know, crazy right. Conspiracy theorists are everywhere.

Yeah, I agree. I'm struggling to accept the burn out theory. He's in the squad every game, sitting on the bench, but never getting on. During the last few weeks we've seen Jones, Rooney, Giggs and a bit of Anderson in midfield but not Cleverley. Now he's sent to the U-21 for a game.

I don't think he's been 'eased' back in because if it is burn out, why not just let him rest. We don't really need him for the three remaining matches.

Fair to say he has not brought his shooting boots for the ressies - some real row z action in the first half...

Yeah this is as bad as I've ever seen him when it comes to shooting.

Scoring nice goals doesn't make his shooting in this game any better though does it. My point still stands, his shooting in this game has been as bad as I've ever seen of him if not worse. Yes, his shooting in this game so far has been the worst I've seen from him.

I never believed the burn out theory and am sure there was more to that. Now he is either gaining match pratice (for games that dont matter much anymore) or Fergie wants to teach him a lesson

Why would Fergie put him on the bench if he had a problem with him? He would just leave him out of the squad altogether.

The new wilshere, the one who shits on fabregas and the white pele. Thank god were not rawk;)

:nervous: apologies oops read that wrong!

Strange game for him to play in all the same.

It's either a fitness thing or an attitude thing. Either way, Fergie will sort it out. This sort of behind the scenes stuff is where he is truly head and shoulders over any other manager.

Hopefully we'll get to see Tom playing again before next season. But if he needs to be taken down a peg or two, that's fine by me.

Since his last game with England, he rarely played. I don't think it's attitude problem. He seems like a hungry player to succeed. And he hasn't made that one available CM spot as his, yet.

Young man problem is usually woman related. or just burned out after a long season.

Really faded badly as the seasons progressed.

Lets hope he gets a good rest & preseason under his belt.

After the loss to Madrid Cleverley tailed off badly up until today but I thought he had a very decent showing today and got an assist. Surprised Tom got taken off because he was playing pretty well at the time and, though he wasn't exceptional by any means, the loss of his legs and energy in midfield showed after that point.

I agree.

It's funny how the sudden change in shoreline is impacting perceptions of Cleverley and Anderson today - I thought both were good.

i'm really beginning to worry about him, he fades so badly as games go on. Hopefully this season was a form dip and he has what it take to play to a United midfield level week in a week out and come back good next season.

Yea I wasn't referring especially to today fwiw - though I also don't think they had "good games". Both Tom & Ando were ok/decent i thought.

The reason I bumped the thread was after posting in the "post match, post SAF" thread I see most posters still want a cm signing as number 1 target.

I like Cleverley & I was hoping he'd cement that spot down as his this season. But he's still young. Plenty of time. Lots of encouraging signs as well.

Its not overly surprising though some players have made their careers based on the back of scorelines.

Think of how many times someone like Steven Gerrard has been playing terribly, hitting Hollywood balls into the stands, and then one goes right or he smashes in a goal from the edge of the box and suddenly all that is forgotten.

Disappointed in his lack of ability to control and dictate the game alongside Carrick. I think it's a given that Anderson doesn't have a great deal of defensive responsibility but I was hoping Carrick and Cleverley could really get a foothold in the game. After their first goal, I wasn't particularly impressed with either of them.

I thought that was some kind of weird metaphor.

What did it mean? Incoming and outgoing tides? Coastal erosion? Global warming? And how did it relate to football?

Disappointing that it was just a typo. :(

I feel he'll grow into the role and will get better with age. The season will give him confidence and he'll come back reinvigorated after a summer's rest.

I'll wait till end of next season to pass a judgement on him.

I think he'll come back in the next season or two and shut up some of the people dismissing him.

It's a shame but highly predictable that a young, homegrown player is written off after a few months of poor form.
