Tom Cleverley | 2012-14 Performances

Yeah, Cleverley's been terrific. Struggled a bit with lasting the full 90 and definitely dipped in form over the last month or so but put in a lot of really excellent performances and a big reason our record against our rivals at the top of the table has been unusually good this season.

His performances of 2012 were much better than those of 2013, but the talent is there. He's quite clearly struggling with the demands of playing every 3 or 4 days at a top club and thus his performances have suffered...but his first full season without major injury for us, it's gone reasonably well hasn't it?

The PL medal will do wonders for him, as it will for Welbeck and Jones. All three have had terrific moments this season and all three have gone through difficult spells but as our English core for the next 5-10 years, this PL win is going to be brilliant for them.

I look forward to seeing him make another step up next season, especially if the pressure is taken off somewhat with a new midfielder.

You said he had a specifc role in the WH game - but in this particular game, he didnt have the role as you described

Well he did start in CM along side Carrick. I think someone said he was at times seen higher than Rooney. That doesnt mean he playing AM and Rooney was playing CM. He was in there to deal with the long ball situations since West Ham play like Stoke.

I don't think he's been that great to be honest, although he's definitely been the best we have (after Carrick of course).

Agree with this but I don't want to be too harsh on Cleverley but I don't think he is top drawer more of Nicky Butt standard although not style (not a bad player to have around esp as he came through the reserves albeit bought in for peanuts)

Doubt we will see him more this season if we win the title tonight. He's played enough and Fergie seem to be very careful with him, rightly so.

Might as well let him go on summer holiday early after tonight.

Win today and maybe he plays against Arsenal/Chelsea who are going to give us hell of a hard game in that they are fighting for a CL spot. So more of a chance for him to get big game experience with a little less pressure.

Pretty much. No point over playing him if SAF feels he's in danger of burn out.

What's that burn out stuff again? He's a 22 year old pro player that has not played for 3 weeks or so, not a granddad running a marathon ffs

I've always believed in Cleverley's ability and I still do but if the Boss judges that he isn't up to it I hope his response isn't to try and convert Phil Jones and Wayne Rooney into central midfielders...

I can understanding Clev not starting many games recently, I think he was showing a bit of a drop in his last few games but it's his lack of sub appearances I've found odd. I mean against Villa we had wrapped the game up early and Fergie has already said Carrick was playing with a knock, but still Clev didn't get a sniff. But end of the day its not a big deal, this is his first season really with us having missed most of last season and not playing a huge amount of games in the seasons before that.

@R_o_M: The last time Cleverley started a league game was February 10th (vs Everton). Since then he's played 22 minutes of league football.

I don't get it.

It's definitely a bit strange, I thought he would start today.

Simple for me, it's his first full season, last season he was injured for a total of 6 months and he already played a lot this season. He started to rest Cleverley when we went 12 point clear, I think he would have played if the league was still close at the top.

Why do we need the same hysterics every time?

Nothing has changed. His performances had started to drop, presumably due to issues with stamina or burnout. He started 40 games for club and country by the end of February. It's more football than he's had in a season before.

Hopefully he'll be back next season refreshed, stronger and fitter.

I'm starting to wonder what he's done to deserve being dropped for so long.

Bad attitude in training? Personal problems (as suggested), pissed in fergies chips?

Do you have a reason to not believe he's simply burnt out?

Are people still so sure it is only a resting reason? I said so weeks ago that there must be something else but everyone thought Fergie was just cautious with him

He's not getting games because his form took a real nosedive and others are now preferred. Could be more to it but its odd how a lot of people think he's some kind of shoe-in in central midfield. The right to partner Carrick is very much up for grabs.

It has been a decent campaign on the whole for him but I expect progress again next season...both in his game and consistency.

Fergie said after the Chelsea game in the FA Cup that him, Carrick, Evra and Rafa had no energy left.
It appear Cleverley simply were in need of more than two weeks rest, no surprise when he's been out a long time last season with injury and this is his first full season.

Because if he's still burnt out after not starting since Feb, he should GTFO right now.

:lol::wenger:

He started in arguably our most important game of the season against Madrid on March 5th, and then again against Chelsea on March 10th and April 1st in the FA Cup Quarter Finals. Don't let facts get in the way though.

His season started about a month before the rest of the squad. He started 40 games for club and country by March, more than he has in any season previously, and at a much higher standard than he has played at before.

I'd be amazed if he hasn't been working on his strength and fitness with the aim of him being more able to last the distance next season. He's undoubtedly first choice to partner Carrick, IMO.
