Those claiming he went for the goal I would think he should be reprimanded for taking the wrong option. RvP was well placed for the cross.

Never meant that did Tom...he shaped to cross all day long.

He should be reprimanded for delivering such a shite cross the berk!

If he meant it, the celebrations would have been a bit more over the top. You could clearly tell it wasn't meant as a shot by the way he looked.

Very happy he's an established first team player here. We could do with another midfielder with his energy and precision short passing.. hopefully Anderson steps up his game this season.

It's like a free kick from those areas a bit further out, players mean to put it in the general area and depending on how it is struck, the bounce or keepers positioning it either finds on of your lads or goes in.

On twitter right now:

'Good performance good win and great fans. Of course I meant it!'

;)

Very good performance from Tom. He didn't mean the goal though. Was picking out Van Persie.

I don't think he was shooting as such but, as mentioned, he's aimed it towards the back post.

Great performance today, his work rate and closing down put Tiote's to shame and really stopped Newcastle getting a head of steam up every time they threatened to.

Cross. A player who almost never scores will never try to score from there. If he missed then he would have gotten an earful from his teammates because RVP was in a good position so that was a cross.

He basically said he was aiming for the corner and put it into an area so if someone got a head onto it, it would have been a great cross. He hasn't come out and said it was definitely a shot on goal.

He doesn't seem a bad goal scoring midfielder to me, ok he never scored last season but hardly played due to injury, season before that he scored a few good goals for Wigan in another injury hit year and the year before that he got into double figures before missing then end of the season with injury. The lad has always chipped in with goals in the years he has played in pre season aswell I could really see him getting around 10 goals this season if he is played regular and stays injury free

I can see him scoring more regularly because of the positions he sometimes gets himself into, but a goal from the left hand touchline into the far corner is not exactly something that he would have ever tried. If you're not scoring easy chances like he missed for England, why would he try a very difficult attempt like that? Maybe I'm wrong but was that not his only attempt on goal?

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt but I struggle to see him making that decision over crossing the ball to RVP.

was hardly the left hand touch line he was level with the edge of the box, I have no idea if he meant it or not missed second half of the game and only seen that gif but he does seem to try his luck from distance a bit seen him hitting the post of Britain from distance and again for england i think recently

And long may in continue. Same again next week Tom!

His best performance so far. He's had a tendency to disappear from a game for substantial periods, but not today. Cleverley and Rooney in front of Carrick is a very good midfield.

Really good performance from him. He provided lots of energy and running to the team today and did his job both with the ball and off it as well.

No idea if he actually meant to shoot or not for his goal, but it really was an amazing goal. It really took the pressure off and killed the contest. Hopefully he can build from this and we start winning the midfield battle more regularly.

I know this is a banal but it wasn't on purpose. In the opening minutes, he virtually did made the same play and his movement for the cross was exactly the same.

Anyways, excellent performance from him. I was impressed by his work rate and how he pressed the opposition.

Good performance. Was busy whole game and worked very hard. Glad he has scored his first goal. It was definately a cross but who cares.

If it was Messi who had done this, there is every possibility that a lot of people would have claimed it to be intentional; just like they did with Ronaldinho against Seamen all those years ago..

He was definitely aiming to put additional dip and speed on the ball, from the way he swung his foot at it. It wasn't a cross, and it wasn't a mis-kick either, he got pretty clean contact. I think he went for goal, but it's one of those hit and hope shots. You don't ever expect these to go in, but he was lucky this time round.

I dont see the point of discussing this endless. Goal is goal, and it was an important one to settle the game.

I'd rather discuss about his performance, especially the movement he brought into the game as well as his energy. I'm sure he was one of the players who run the most, he was up and down, provided with if necessary and kept us ticking in midfield together with Rooney. Very promising performance

Never scores...sure he hasn't been exactly setting the world on fire for United yet...

but a couple of seasons ago he had a near on 1 in 3 record for Watford(11 goals in 35 appearances) and even for Wigan he scored 4 goals in 25 matches.

He definitely has an eye for goal.

Just heard his interview from after the game. He thought the man on the back post was "Wellbz" - so when he looked up, it must have been at the goal, not at the player.

I reckon that's proof! ;)

I'm glad he's saying he meant it, obviously tongue in cheek and he's just having fun.

Cracking player mind.

Are you suggesting that footballers don't ever use the same technique to shoot on goal as they would to play a pass or cross? What about those shots that are "passed in"?

I'm not saying he meant it, I've no idea, but to say he didn't mean it because be used a similar technique that he used to cross previously is ludicrous. An identical technique can be used to shoot or pass, at times.

If he says he meant it then I'll give it to him. First viewing I thought he went for it, replays I thought he'd crossed it. He reckons he meant it? Good enough for me!

I was more impressed with his general play anyhow. He really does deserve a run in the team. Often this season we've missed someone who can get about the pitch quickly and harass the other team. He does that very well. He's also capable of scoring from midfield. Which we have lacked in previous seasons.

Obviously it doesn't matter as it's a goal but both conclusions are plausible. I side with those who say he meant it. It looked like one of those hit and hope shots that somehow caressed perfectly into the top corner.

I thought he badly overhit his cross, but I agree that the thing with those sort of balls into the box is that as long as they're directed at the back post, they can cause all sorts of troubles.
