The touch he takes to set himself up for a shot at 4:40 is marvelous. Very quick thinking.

He's the player I've been most impressed from yesterdays match (I know, nothing new there). The talent is obviously there, but the difference between him and some other young talented player is his confidence IMO. He's confident enough to take ball to the tight spaces, don't play something we call in Croatia "alibi passes", meaning he won't give ball to the first player that's available, mostly that's defenders, just to play safe pass, but he's trying to get ball forward and always makes himself available for the pass back. Also he's is small sized, but that doesn't affect his tackling and has great energy running around making things to happen instead of waiting them to happen. Really like what I saw from him yesterday and hope he builds from there.

It's a good start but only that. The game was set up for his positive approach. We were 2 goals down having to go on the attack and City were happy to sit back letting us have possession.

At times both Cleverly and Anderson were bombing forward and left huge gaps in front of the centrebacks. His all action display worked as it was for 45 mins I doubt he could repat that for the full 90 mins week in week out. Wasn't it said about Fletcher the way he plays he just tires himself out so can't continue playing at the high tempo week in week out.

I would like to see how he plays when we are on the back foot.

Errmmm at 2-0 down we were on the backfoot

No we wern't. We played the whole of that second half going forward. We may have been behind in terms of the scoreline, but while Tom was on the pitch we were never on the backfoot.

They tracked back too

I think onto a more salient point. In which formation is he best? in a two man midfield or a three man midfield?

----------Hart
Johnson---Smalling--Jones--Gibbs
------------Rodwell------
----Cleverley------Wilshere
Johnson---------------Young
------------Rooney

Not a bad team for the future (If you can replace Johnson with someone half decent)

Not a bad team, and no doubt better players will come about in the future that will be better than Johnson and Rodwell

if i am the england manager i would probably try something like this

Thats a good point, England struggle for a solid RB and Smalling is playing so well at RB at the moment

Yeah and they probably would get raped.

england have been raped since 1966. nothing new.

Well if you are getting raped for so long, then you do something to try and change that situation. You don't just lie down, ignore everything and keep getting killed all the time.

There is absolutely no help defensively from the midfield. One is a playmaker and the other is an attacking mid.

For too long, England have relied on overpaid prima-donnas who can't transform their club form into their international team (namely Gerrard). You'd be surprised what young, hungry and fresh players can do. They may lose, but I don't think they'd get raped.

If you're saying about a defensive minded person in the midfield, then Jones would be in contention surely.

Young backs Cleverley to shine
Monday, 08 August, 2011

Midfielder believes United team-mate has a big future with England.

Ashley Young believes Tom Cleverley has got a big future with the England team and feels he will have no problems settling into the squad following his first call-up for the friendly against Holland on Wednesday night.

Cleverley had an impressive loan spell with Wigan last season and has been outstanding once again for Manchester United during the pre-season campaign.

The Manchester United midfielder impressed Fabio Capello when he appeared as a substitute during the Community Shield win over Manchester City and was called up as a replacement for Jack Wilshere and Michael Carrick who have pulled out of the squad.

Young has no doubts that Cleverley will make an immediate impact and has the ideal chance to cement his place in the squad.

Young said: “He has done terrific in pre-season and when I have seen him. I think if you saw the game on Sunday he was brilliant when he came on and he has got a great future ahead of him.

“I’m sure he will be delighted to join up with the squad. He has been tremendous and I’m sure he will go onto be a top player.

“He is confident in his own ability and I’m sure he will come here and do well. He knows a few of the players here and he will be very welcomed into the squad.”

Young is also hoping to impress once again and believes his summer move to Manchester United will improve his chances of getting a regular run in the England team.

Young added: “Hopefully it will boost my England chances even more so than when I was with Aston Villa. I have said that moving to Manchester United will improve my chances of getting a regular starting place.

“As long as I am playing well for Manchester United fingers crossed I can start for England as well.

“I think it is very important to have a friendly as preparation for the qualifiers that are coming up. All the teams are involved in friendlies this week so it is good preparation.”

Maybe but there is no way they could keep Sneidjer, Van der Vaart and De Jong quiet.
