He certainly is repaying the managers faith in him. Today was his competitive debut correct?

It was indeed.

Nice to hear Gary Neville boosting him up on Sky Sports after the game too:

The coaches he's played under on loan, the Boss, ex greats like Paddy Crerand, RedNev etc. all these people can't be wrong about his ability.

Really impressed at how he gets back and is a far more accomplished tackler than I though. Really upped the tempo for us when we needed it.

One thing for sure he will now be competing for a starting eleven very soon, and if i was Carrick i would be worried.

Even if we buy another midfielder i can see him vying for a starting position, and another thing we can safely say this is the end of Gibson...

You re right about giggs but carrick is very strong physically.

The trouble with Carrick is although he does provide some naturally defensive attributes, he lacks some significant attributes too. Pace, dynamism, energy and an ability to take the ball under pressure, which is currently why he is more effective with Giggs, he offers all those things.

Carrick and anderson together has some potential, but the amount of times they have played well together is not that often, considering how long they have played in our midfield. Their partnership collectively often mirrors their individual performances, inconsistent.

Cleverley and Anderson seem to bring the best out of each other and although neither of them are predominantly defensive players they have the type of stamina and enthusiasm to cover both requirements with a minimum of fuss. It has only been 2 games admittedly, but when was the last time we saw Anderson play 2 games of that overall quality back to back against quality midfields?

Yes they are only pre season games but if we look at the games against Barca and City they were still seriously contested, none could be accused of being a practice match. Yet Cleverley and Anderson have played extremely well both collectively and individually against very good players. They have played with fluidity and freedom, imagination and energy, and i am hoping they get the chance to build on this early promise as Hernandez and Rooney did last season.

Football is all about complimentary partnerships all over the field, we now have Rooney and Hernandez, Evra and Park, Vidic and Rio and now Cleverley and Anderson. It can only bode well imo.

He's not naturally an amazing talent, but he's a fecking winner. He's got a real football brain on him too. He just keeps getting better, and he doesn't half get across the park.

Absolutely. It's clearly taken vast amounts of pigheadedness for him to get to where he is and if he keeps it up he's gonna keep progressing for years to come.

Calling it a very good performance is a bit of a understatement to Tom.

His energy, drive and quick constant movement either of or with the ball is exactly what we needed in midfield.

Welbeck put in a solid display aswell. I loved the ability our front 4 had to interchange positions so easily. It's a right old nightmare for defenders that.

I liked the look of this guy from the little I saw of him today. Came and slotted in well, as well as linking up effectively with the forward players. Definitely a useful squad option to have, as well as to provide competition to Carrick and others in CM.

I'll be the first to admit I've not followed his career very closely so far, only really watching highlights of Wigan last season, but he looks the real deal. Quick, controlled, intelligent and not afraid to shoot or square up to supposed 'bigger' players, he looms like he has a self-assurance that borders on arrogance without overstepping the mark.

Probably a predictable comparison but reminds me of Wilshere a bit. Little lad with enough skill but also a tough edge. I hope he gets a real chance to impress this season, alongside Welbeck.

Ferguson made a key tactical tweak at the interval, withdrawing the quiet Michael Carrick and sending on the hugely promising Tom Cleverley. The youngster, his game-craft sharpened by time on loan under Roberto Martínez at Wigan Athletic, knitted the midfield together, snapping into tackles and playing some fine passes, many first time.

Brimming with confidence, clearly believing a central midfield place is up for grabs, Cleverley even took the ball off Wayne Rooney at one point, although he then hurried his shot. On this uplifting evidence, Cleverley will rub shoulders with Rooney again at Wembley — with England. --Henry Winter, Telegraph match report: Man City 2 Man Utd 3

;)

I think it would be knee jerk to suggest he is first choice etc yet, but for me his performance yesterday proved that he CAN do it against the big teams (massive ones in fact) and evidently is ready to make the jump. All he needs now is to get some game time under his belt and spend some more time with the squad.

He is good enough to get enough games this season. I don't see any fear in his game even though this may be his first big game for us in England. Just need to be curb his enthusiasm abit especially when he lost the ball at the end of the game and got berated by Rooney

He's obviously already good enough to take over Gibson's role in the squad, at the very least. But Cleverley and Welbeck, like the twins, have a history of missing a lot of games through injury, so it would be unwise to rely on Cleverley as first choice at this stage.

His performance made Carricks first-half look even worse than it did while it was actually happening.

He put energy and vision and positional expertise into this side, and the difference was extraordinary. In two games (Barca friendly and City) he has moved from a player I thought should be loaned back out into someone who simply has to start the season alongside Anderson as first choice.

There was one moment when I looked at the team saw Jones, Smalling, Cleverley, Young, Welbeck and Rooney out there - and thought I might actually enjoy watching England play in a couple of years time.

i can see this happening too..just don't allow someone like pearce anywhere close to the managerial job..

Very true, I thought the same. Its been a while since United have had a strong amount of players in the England team. Welbeck and Jones have call ups for the upcoming friendly, next time Cleverley could have one too.

Don't get your hopes up as soon as they get those white shirts on they'll have that passing football beaten out of them didn't you see "Psycho's" boys in the Euro U21s? People will actually criticise them for holding the ball too long and not playing it down the channel quick enough when we've got big lads up front. Lets not forget we've seen it all before with Becks and especially with Scholes. England will never change. If Cleverley gets into the national team it wont be long before people start asking why he doesn't show enough passion and constantly passes the ball sideways when he could be hitting the centre forward with the hollywood pass...

Out-fecking-standing to be honest. He really was a breath of fresh air. His movement, and one touch passing keeping the ball ticking over was top notch. He's also not afraid of getting his foot in and really was box to box.

Our central midfield pairing of Cleverley and Anderson totally outplayed their 3 man midfield of Silva, Yaya and De Jong. I think that says it all really.

Very much looking forward to seeing more of him this season. He really could be the star of the future. Our very own Wilshire, without being a massive twat though obviously.

Cleverley was excellent but it's very early days to start deciding he's part of our best XI, alongside Anderson. Even if we don't sign anyone else, chances are Carrick will continue to get the nod for most big games. His importance to the team was reflected by Fergie's decision to rush him back from an injury, after initially saying he was going to miss out.

What's really encouraging about Cleverley, is that he looks versatile enough to perform well alongside all our other CM options. Which is not something you can say about everyone else, most of whom seem to have preferred midfield partners in order to be at their best.

I did watch the U21s - it was horrible :D In fact after the U21s I was left wondering if Cleverley was actually any good. That's another reason why it was great to see him looking so comfortable at United.

So here's a question then, when was the last time a young midfielder (not a winger) so well accepted as "United quality" by the fans right out of the gate?

Just wait, once he hits poor form, he's written off as fast as he was hyped up

Anderson?

He looked extremely tired after 45 minutes... He basically gave it his all and thats what I call United quality.

He sped to each City possession... Got stuck in... Won the ball back and totally changed the game...

City couldn't handle his movement... Same to the other players we had interchanging all over the pitch... Welbeck + A.Young were switching from centre to flank etc...

The real problem imo. was that in the first half, Rooney was playing the Hernandez role while Welbeck was the one playing deep, Rooney in the 2nd went deep, got more of the ball and then our game started to move.

Cleverly though, assisted Nani, came on and just blew past that citeh MF.

Looking good and I can see him as an impact substitute for now ( Unless we play the weaker sides ).

You'd have to go a way back then. I can't remember the debuts of Scholes and Butt very clearly. Probably be one of those two.

Wasn't Scholesy's the two goals against Port Vale in the League Cup? That was simply unforgettable especially as United had been criticised in Parliament for devaluing the game by fielding our youngsters in the competition. The prevailing wisdom at the time was that "you can't win anything with kids"...

Back to the subject of Cleverley though. Yes, an extremely accomplished competitive debut one of the most impressive not just from a homegrown player but from any United player of the past decade in my opinion. You can think of easier instances to come off the bench in than 2-0 down at a time where we looked a little shellshocked having shipped two goals against the run of play against a strong three man midfield and one of the best defensive units in the country. Yet Cleverley took it all in his stride.

Thats the kind of compsure a United midfielder needs.

So this is first time I've gotten so see him play in such detail. And I have to say I'm impressed. I don't think he changes the need for someone top class in central midfield but I like the look of him. What impressed me about him was his quickness of thought. Again, it's far too little to judge what his potential is but that impressed me. There was this one particular time the ball came to him and he stamped it forward towards Rooney to keep the move going. It wasn't a very difficult ball to play but given the frantic nature of the game ATM and how quickly the ball came at him I like how fast he made up his mind to play the right ball where there were safer options available. And he looks a busy player , always up to something.

So yeah, early impressions are good and those aspects stands out. Lets see how he gets on when the proper season starts.

Skysports.com understands Tom Cleverley has been called into the England squad to face Holland.
