Tom Cleverley | 2011/12 Performances

I've never understood the weight of expectation placed on him. He hasn't done much to justify it. He may become a top player but he's not one yet.

I've always thought the same but assumed I'd get shit thrown at me from some Cafites for saying so, refreshing to see someone else who shares my opinion.

I still think he's a brilliant centre midfielder and showed glimpses of it in the first half like when he drifted inside picked up the ball drove forward 30 yards and played a wall pass with Rooney before playing the first time ball to Young who hit it against the keeper with the angle narrowing.

What we saw tonight is what we have seen many times before in Cleverley's career: He's not very good further forward. What tends to happen with Cleverley when he's played in the hole or on the wing is that he doesn't get as many touches as he likes, he becomes marginalised and when he gets the ball he tries to force the issue too much and ends up being cak. We saw that graphically displayed in the Euro U21s last summer where frankly he was awful. Anyone who saw how he played in that tournament cant have been surprised by how ineffectual he was and how he increasingly lost his composure as the game went on.

A little like Rooney you gotta get him in the game, get him feeling the ball or you wont get the best out of him. Just anxious, rushed touches.

Heh. I figured he'd be getting slagged off. In his first European start after spending most of the season out injured. Against a team that played us off the park. Nothing if not predictable.

Didn't he start both against Ajax?

Anyways, he was absolutely shite today, like most of our team to be fair. Nothing to write home about, just an off-day probably.

The last few pages is like a microcosm of the CAF.

Please comeback Tom->Need him so badly->Back from injury Yeaaaaaaa->He was great in his 20 min comeback Yeaaaaa-> He's starting Yeaaaaaaaaaaaa->feck, he was shit

Poor Tom. Great prospect but way too much expectation on him.

I worded that badly. His first European start after his most recent injury, after a severely injury interrupted season. Basically anyone making sweeping statements about how good or bad he is because he played poorly tonight needs to wise the feck up.

That was exactly my point about him. Ridiculously overhyped to a standard in which he could only disappoint. Let the boy grow like everyone else. He's been playing similarly to Jones. Obviously Jones has played more but the ratio is similar.

Ah, I understand. And yes, of course you're right. Dismissing anyone on the back of a performance in one match is as ridiculous as it gets. I didn't really read through everything in this thread from today, but it didn't seem to me that a a lot of people were pointing out much else than the fact that he wasn't up to par tonight?

Anyways, knock on wood that he can stay fit for the remainder of the season. He can be integral to keeping us ticking in these "easy" games in the run-in against teams that sit back. We often struggle to break through them, and Tom has a lot of skills that are very useful in those matches.

Y'know who he reminds me of? Darren Fletcher. Came in with a huge billing. Put in some good displays at the start at which point he got dubbed the "new Roy Keane". When inevitably as any young player he suffered a dip in form people criticized him to the point where they said he was useless. Now everyone loves him again. Actually the same can be said of Evans.

I can see the same happening with Tom when he inevitably goes through a rough patch. He's a good prospect but let him grow into his the first team FFS.

Young player looks rusty after spell out injured...... well I never.

I'm thinking some of the comment on Cleverley has gone a bit OTT. Had a bad game although probably not significantly worse than most the games he's had on the wing in his career. Lets see him play a good 90 minutes in his proper position before we start saying it was all hype. As I said there was a moment in a first half where he showed what he was capable of. He was in the wrong role to build on that tonight. He'll get back to business soon enough.

Looked out of his depth like many others tonight

Will be a great learning experience for him

Next time I bump into him in London I'll let him know the Caf now thinks he's shit

Terrible player. Can't put in a class performance after months out with injury against a team that completely outplayed us.

Get rid

don't worry, he's an excellent footballer, and will be a good player when he learns the way of the top flight.

It will take time, and he'll be inconsistent for a few years, but hes a tidy player. I think most normal people notice that.

I don't think anyone has said he's shit (I haven't read the last few pages though, just this one).

I think what some people are saying is that we expect a little too much from the lad considering he is still young and learning the game. He started off the season pretty well, as did most of the team. Then came the injury, now he's going to be finding his feet again.

But some people do expect far too much from Cleverley.

Meh, I said way earlier in this thread that people were going completely overboard about him and then when he did put in poor performances the tables would turn, or something along those lines.

Basically, feck you all.

There's not even a question mark about his quality, except with those who judge players on a match to match basis.

Unfortunately there are a lot of them about. Not just on the caf either, but generally.

I know there's United fans at work tomorrow who will be reeling off lists of players SAF needs to get rid of.

Why do terrific and terrible have opposite meanings? They sound like the same word. It annoys me.

Have the people who have built not done the same thing? Cleverley so far has proven nothing. By no means would I write him off but I also wouldn't say there's no question marks about his quality. He's started less than 10 games for Utd.

Similar things were said about Darron Gibson too.

He kept Carrick out of the first team at the beginning of the season, and had some fabulous games. Got injured, and is just coming back into contention.

What did you expect him to prove?

He refuses to make himself available for his teammates when they need an out ball. His defensive contribution is virtually nonexistent.

This is in contrast to someone like Danny Welbeck, who, despite playing further up the pitch, works extremely hard for the team even when we are defending.

Cleverley only seems to appear interested when we are in possession in the opponent's half. More is needed from a Manchester United player.

Seriously overhyped on here. Goes missing way to often.

 That's one of the most preposterous things I've read on here, and that takes some doing! He's played for us about a dozen times, with most of those being very good or very promising looking performances. After tonight, out of position and just back from injury, he's suddenly a guy that "goes missing way too often".

I repeat

You can't have read this yet then:

He always shows for the ball when played in centre mid. He was played out of position on the right wing in a game where we were pegged back for large swathes.

Fitness and the position he played are the important factors from his performance tonight.

What did you expect him to prove?

If people are going to talk about him as the future of our midfield I'd expect him to prove his ability over the course of more than half a dozen games before I join in. I think people got a bit carried away but each to their own.

I'd be happy if people just let him get match-fit before putting the boot in. That would be a start.

I don't think anyone is writing him off though pogue, people are just claiming that he had a shit game and that, just like jones, all the praise may have come a bit too early. I think that's fair enough. I won't make any further judgements on him until he has played a full season with us

He had an immature performance on the night. He's clearly a quality player who will only become better, and hopefully he will be able to learn from these experiences in europe (like the rest of our young players). In one or two years, this group will be devastating in Europe and Cleverly will be a big part of that in my opinion.

Poor Tom. Great prospect but way too much expectation on him.

My attitude to Cleverley hasn't changed. I've seen him play a few games for Wigan, a few games for the under 21's, and a few games for United.

And the only games where he's looked very good were early season games for United. But they were easy games. Anderson was great in those games also.

So, my attitude remains: wait and see. I think our issues in center midfield have made us embrace Cleverley as the answer to our problems too quickly.

I hope he's everything his ardent boosters believe him to be. If he stays fit, he should get the opportunity to prove himself in the coming months.

Or, people never bought the whole "he's the kingpin of our team/second coming, saviour of Old Trafford" hype in the first place.

He is a very promising youngster trying to break into the first team, and should be treated as such. He is not the xavi/modric people were claiming when he was out, he isn't even first choice in a relitavely week midfield.

If anyone is doing him a ***-service, it's your kind pinning un-reachable expectations on him before he has learned to tie his shoelaces.

I think you need to wise up a bit, Pogue, you old tart.

First start after 4 months out. Of course it does

True. We need to get off this injury band wagon though. I've seen Ronaldo been injured for 4 months and come back with a bang same with player like Gerrard. Flipping hell Tony V. Just because you come back from injury doesn't mean you 'have to play shit'.

I'm just pointing it out not really criticising him.

Who called him a savior or the kingpin of the team or claiming him to be Xavi.

It's sad really, you can't praise young players anymore without the overrated/overhyped lines coming out after a bad game or 2.

He is a very good young player. Some of us had the chance watching in the United youth teams, then go on loan to Watford in the championship and then make the step up to Wigan in the PL. Not just judging on 8 PL games.
