Why is everyone so sure he'll start at the weekend?

I'm expecting Carrick + Giggs in the middle.

I'm still reserving judgement until I see more. However I still think that he looks a player who would be much more suited to playing the attacking role in a three. Will be interesting to see how he does in a two against better opposition when he's got his sharpness back.

I want a midfield 3 away to a dangerous Norwich side, Cleverley/Scholes/Carrick thank you very much.

The players he was with today aren't exactly the best one touch passers. With Rooney and Welbeck up top, and an in form Nani and Valencia out wide there will be plenty of players capable of the quick one touch passing that Cleverley seems to excel at. Carrick will sit back a little deeper and facilitate the ball to the players around him like he does best. I see no reason why the would not be a very successful midfield duo.

Fair point and judging from opinions from inside the training ground Cleverley and Welbeck do apparently have an almost telepathic link up with one another, very much looking forward to seeing that come to fruition on a regular basis after the teaser we got earlier in the season

I agree, he still needs to polish a few things for being part of a midfield pair.

I wasn't aware you weren't allowed to go against the grain of forum opinion here.

I didn't say you weren't but to jump at the first chance to criticise Cleverley is unfair in my opinion. Had you said something like "Hopefully tonight will cool the hype, he still has a lot to learn" I would have agreed with you but you didn't. Whether you like or not the hype is there and you should hope he lives up to it.

What exactly are you watching for?
If you watch for the true signs you will see exactly why there is hype.

Enlighten me with the true signs oh great one. I've been watching false signs all these years.

I hate to break this to you but I don't post here for your acceptance or agreement. I have posted in this thread previously about his over the top hype.

Clearly I do hope he lives up to it. Anything else would be monumentally stupid.

Him and Park in the middle have the defensive strength of a jelly filled donut...

He recieves the ball on either the front foot or back foot exceptionally well and what is even better is that he can do this with either foot. He is always available to receive the ball but also knows when to find space and when to vacate space. Knowing when to vacate space is important because it enables a team mate to pass through the channel he has just created. The other reason this is important is it means he can read the game well and see passes earlier. he often drags defenders out of a channel before going back in to receive. He is a heads up player and this is especially important in crowded situations. He also has a strong core which means that he is able to hold off players while dribbling. He can dribble very well with the ball close to his feet if needed, not Ronaldo or Nani style dribbling but the sort which makes it difficult for defenders to challenge for the ball and enables him to release a pass on the run. He does all the basic things exceptionally well

The 'signs' are, in my opinion that at a similar age he is streets ahead of say, Anderson in allot of the things that allot of us assumed that Anderson would have already developed (short passing, decision making, the weight of a pass, seemingly knowing when to play which pass, keeping and dictating tempo, shooting). He also seems to have two legs, which Anderson does not.

People will still harp on their thinking that Anderson has all of the potential in the world to be 'World Class', because he has shown glimpses. But then so has Cleverley. Though Cleverley, in what little we have seen in the first team seems to have, and add consistency in the midfield - even after months of layoff and lack of experience.

It seems that some don't want him to succeed as he isn't or hasn't shown at this level that he is a 'flair' player. However, I'd take my chances on Cleverley becoming more of a 'flair' player than I would on Anderson becoming consistent.

Tbf I was impressed by his touch today, he was controlling some tough balls in tight situations.

How do you propose getting them to me?

Here, a whole pack too so you have some left over for other stuff:

Streets ahead? He hasn't played anywhere near enough games to come to that opinion. I could take a ten game sample of Anderson's career and give better performances.

Comparing the two isn't the best way of proving he's living up to his hype. Anderson has fallen short of the required performance level to date so saying Cleverley is better proves very little. He's a long way to go.

A whole lot of words saying very little. I'm glad you're here.

The lad has potential, I think he'll do well for us, but he should be given time and not hyped as the messiah so soon. There has been a whole pile of expectation heaped on his shoulders in a relatively short period of time. I know it's because he's looked good in the little he's played, but it isn't fair to expect him to "fix" our midfield. He needs to be allowed to develop and grow into a position.

The injuries haven't helped but SAF really rates him and I can see little things in his game which fill me with confidence that he will live up to his billing, there will be bumps along the way though. Patience is needed.
