It is, but again, who? Who is there who would really improve us and who would be available as well for the CL?

Why do we need someone who's eligible for CL? We will be better off with someone who could help us in the league only than no one at all, certainly? I don't get all this talk about players having not to be cup-tied to be bought by us.

There are plenty of midfielders who would improve us. If you want someone who will be free to play in CL, then you have M'Vila, Martinez and Rodwell for the defensive work. If you want creativity then most of available ones are indeed cup-tied for CL - Eriksen, Hazard and Gotze.

Because a cup tied player prefers to keep on playing in the CL - simple really. When was the last time such a player moved in January?

Martinez and M'Vila would be great - but if we are interested, why didnt we get them before?

So you think that there is not one available central midfielder out there who: a) hasn't played in the Champions League this season; and b) is better than an out of form Fletcher, an inconsistant Carrick, a 37 year old/out of position Giggs/Park/Rooney and... Gibson.

World football must be in a pretty bad state.

Name them. Maybe I am just not a big enough muppet

I firmly believe that if Fergie thinks these youngsters will be ready in the near future then he won't go out and spend. I said this before the summer and we didn't spend, even though the idea was inconceivable to a lot of people when I originally gave this opinion. The fact that we didn't spend and are willing to play players out of position in the meantime further convinces me that this is what is happening.

I don't have a scouting network that spreads throughout the globe, but I'm pretty sure if you look at most teams that just failed to qualify for the Champions League from the top leagues last season (Italy, Spain, England), most have a central midfielder or 2 that would improve us.

Hell just from lower teams in the Premier League I thought the likes of Alejandro Faurlín, Tiote & Arteta would improve us. I'm not saying we should have or should buy these players, but the fact that they would improve us means there must be dozens of players elsewhere that our scouts are aware of.

Javi Martinez, who in my opinion would be the best midfielder we could buy.

M'Vila is cup tied I think cause of the Europa, but that shouldn't stop us.

/edit: If you want a list of potential targets look at the transfer forums, whether or not they are cup tied shouldn't really matter. Oh and you are allowed to register one player per season who has already played in the Europa League to play in the Champions League.

Martinez is a great talent, and we should have bought him after the U-21 Cup. But would he immediately improve us?

I said that already but he kept asking ;)

Most definitely, already better than anyone we have in midfield. Well, apart from a 38 year old Giggsy maybe.

Well, there will be no dilemma as to whether to keep on playing in CL for any of these as Gotze and Hazard will go out at the group stages, and Eriksen's Ajax might do so as well if they lose to Lyon away from home which is likely.

A very young talent who we have no idea how he will do in the EPL...

You cant be serious when mentioning the transfer forum

Europa doesn't count anymore, you are allowed to register one player who participated in Europa. Real did that with Huntelaar or Diarra two years ago, so did someone else since then I am sure.

There is no way Götze will leave in January. There was a huge article in a german magazine, very interesting read and gave great insight

He's 23, not that young at all, and considering what he's done so far it wouldn't be nearly as much of a risk as when we spent €30m on an 18 year old Anderson, that's for sure.

Being sensible though, buying players, especially young players, in January isn't really ideal cause they generally always struggle. Despite our vast need for a midfielder, we'll just have to persevere til the Summer.

The most worrying aspect of this injury for me is how the fans will react during his time out. It's inevitable with every passing game where our midfield isn't deemed upto scratch that Cleverley's stock will rise amongst United fans. He's only played 7 times of us and I feel unnecessary burdens are already being placed on his shoulders. He has the temperament to deal with it but I shudder to think how fans will react to a few bad performances.

Bring through Pogba and Ravel.

youth is the answer !!!

We might have to, can't see us buying in the new year as Saf hinted in his presser. Mabey city will be out of sight by then, this current midfield isn't good enough anymore.

There is no way we will ever sign him to completely fair, I was just pointing out that there are players out there for whom being cup-tied shouldn't be much of an issue.

which goes back to the point that it is harder to attract top players in January

I agree. This is a lad who has still only made 7 first team appearances. We cannot expect too much from him!

Fergie has gambled our whole season on the availability of Tom Cleverley.

Bloody hell. This is shite news and he's done really well in the games he's played for us but it's not as if we're going to get relegated now because we've lost Tom Cleverley for a few games! That's the way some of you seem to be reacting.

It was a clumsy tackle more than anything. Bolton have far more reason to be pissed off with us that we do with them after Evans' tackle on Stuart Holden

It wasn't so much the tackle that annoyed me it was the fact he said prior to the game he was going to get "stuck in" too our young players. Then he goes and does that in the first few mins.

Seemed intentional.

Fergie says Cleverley out til Christmas. "His injury is worse than first feared. It's unfortunate."

fecking hell. Shittiest news since the season started.

Wish we'd stop messing about and just buy a midfielder already. It's becoming like the arsene's keeper mistakes. Unless were ready to truly give our youth prospects a chance which it seems were not.

feck off.

These small injuries will realy hurt his development and threaten his permanent place in the first team for us in future.

Awful news!

Concur.

Its a real shame cos Cleverley has got that something to be a bloody special player but thanks to hardman Kevin Davies who knows if this season it'll be properly seen?

Hopefully Carrick is fit and can bring some stability and order back to our play. Pogba's case must be pressed too. 10-15 minutes against some of the weaker sides is not unwarranted in his case. Lets test him out see what he can do.

What's this current injury got to do with the injury sustained at Bolton?
