Tom Cleverley | 2011/12 Performances

The Boss was clearly worried about how Cleverley would handle himself against the physically powerful players that City have in centre midfield but probably figured at 2-0 down it was worth giving him a go. Thank Heavens he did. As Sir Alex said he changed the game when he came on and he's picked himself since.

I think we're all glad he did. I think he has bags of potential and he's playing very well. I just hope we're not building him up too much and over hyping him. If he gets a good run in the side and performs consistently then I will be as pleased as anybody, but I'm scared that the fans and press will build him up and put too much pressure on him at such an early stage in his career.

He plays for Man Utd he's already under pressure. At United you're under pressure if you draw a game. Winning is a must. So I don't think people saying encouraging things about him is going to be a negative influence on him. He's been doubted, even by United's staff, at virtually every part of his career so I don't think he'll be crushed by criticism when it comes. I'm sure a lot of his motivation right now is proving wrong all the people who said he wasn't good enough to play for us in the first place.

Not sure how many people said he wasn't good enough to play with us but, many had questions about how he would fit in the squad. No one really knew how he'd do in CM, even the boss had questions about it how he'd fare against strong opposition. So far he's done brilliantly but, anyone that claims to have known he'd be this impressive IMO is stretching the truth. We know he was talented but, having not seen him play centrally, there were question marks. There still are on if he'll be able to do it in the long term - the pressures of CM for United can be pretty huge.

What I meant was starting with the club when Cleverley reached 16 years old he's faced doubts about whether or not he could make it and every time he had questions raised about him he answered. In light of that I don't think a few bad headlines are going to derail his progress. He will have the cliche cold night at Stoke at some stage in his career and all the old criticisms that he's too small, too weak, too easily bullied for the Premier League will be raised again. Cleverley's heard them all before, he's answered them all before. Ask Yaya Toure.

I don't think praising Cleverley for what he's doing now is putting pressure on him. As I said he's playing for Man Utd in the Premier League he's already got pressure on him. If we draw on Saturday pick up the Sunday papers and you'll see what pressure he's playing under. Cleverley is not a guy who is going to go weak at the knees under the spotlight. Believe that. He's got the guts and the talent to go with it to become a big star at United and we should be loving every minute we get to watch it happen.

He's had a great start but no need to be overhyping him (or posting the same picture repeatedly). People are right to preach caution, he's only played 3 1/2 competitive games for the club (if you count the Charity Shield), far too few games to make any definitive judgements.

Agreed

I really like Cleverley and think he can become a good player for us, but deep down I still long for that special player. Tom has potential, and works hard, but we need a special talent in order to take us to the next level. Not necessarily Sneijder, he seems like a merc to me and would be a far better fit for Chelsea (surprised they didnt' splash out on him and took Meireles instead).

I certainly hope he can live up to and possibly even exceed the hype, but i think he will be more of an industrious player for us, like Fletcher and Park.

The "Ask Yaya Toure" is very misleading. Yes, he played well in that game when he came on but, that isn't proof that he's made it. Last season a couple of Villa youngsters did very well against some very accomplished CM but, they haven't become stars (yet). Young players can have good games - just can't use a few games as evidence. They can be used as an indicator of what he is capable of. Lets see how the season goes for young Tom.

A few bad headlines now would be different mentally because in the past he hasn't been built up as much as people are trying to now. He says he isn't going to change and does seem to be that type of guy to keep his feet on the ground but, never know. Good thing is he's got the right manager/team behind him as well that if there is a bump in the road that collectively they won't let it become an issue.

I just can't fecking wait for some more football. Mainly to see Cleverley play some more.

Cleverley grateful to Martinez - Premier League News | TEAMtalk
Friday 9th September 2011 15:53

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley says Roberto Martinez deserves "massive" credit for pushing him to the brink of the England team.

After Jack Wilshere used half a season on loan at Bolton to propel himself into the Arsenal first team, and from there into Fabio Capello's squad, Cleverley has followed suit.

A year spent scrapping against relegation at the DW Stadium has turned Cleverley into a first team regular at Manchester United.

It only took 45 minutes of action in the Community Shield to bring the midfielder to Capello's attention.

Three starts for United in the Premier League have further strengthened his case and provided he maintains his present rate of progress, Cleverley will make his international bow before the end of the year.

It is a situation Cleverley has always dreamed of. But the 22-year-old has vowed not to forget who helped make it possible.

"Massive credit must go to Roberto Martinez," said the youngster.

"He brought me on hugely.

"Playing at Wigan benefited me experience-wise. Having the pressure of getting results, even though it was at the different end of the table, was a big help when I went into United's team this year.

"I will always have an eye out for Wigan's results."

It also means Cleverley will not be fazed by having to face Bolton's more muscular attributes at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.

"It was one of the reasons why I went to Wigan," he said.

"I got the chance to play against teams like Bolton and Stoke, some of the more physical sides in the Premier League.

"Whatever the league has to throw at me I am ready for."

It is debatable where Premier League pressure is at its greatest.

Fighting for survival is arguably a more desperate position to be in than trying to win titles.

However, as Cleverley understands, at the top end of the table, the margin for error is so much narrower.

"It is a different pressure," he said.

"You go into every game expecting to win. Tomorrow will be hard but if we play well, I am sure we will get a positive result."

Got a text from a mate saying Tom's confirmed on twitter that it's a broken foot. Surely not?

Not feeling good. Feeling like I have broken my foot. Won't know more until a scan, when I know more will update, thanks guys.

Nice to see we haven't suffered without him, but I still want him back asap. It seemed like more of an ankle from the angle of the tackle, not that that's any better.

Kevin Davies=dirty

Broken foot. 4 weeks then!!

i think we should wait for official confirmed before putting up a timescale on his injury, but it not good seeing him wearing a protective cast on his foot :(

We thought Rio was going to be out for a few months and he's back in the team after 2 weeks.

Lets wait and see what the medical staff have to say first. Fingers crossed!

Cleverley,Welbeck, the Da Silvas so much talent that all keep picking up knocks. Hope it's just a age thing.

Cleverley was plain simply taken out from behind by thug, not much you can do to prevent that

Davis is a thug, shouldve been off in the first half.

Tough luck for Tom, hopefully it's not serious.

Kevin Davies is a dirty prick, does he do anything other than foul people? I hope he slips and twists his ankle the tosser.

Kevin Davies, that dirty twat.

It's such a shame for Cleverley. He was in our team on merit and it looks like his Champions League debut is gonna have to wait a bit longer. Hope it's not too serious.
