Tom Cleverley | 2011/12 Performances

The hype's been snowballing since the shield game, the media not having any other football games and no one else to blow up or slate hasn't helped it either. It's the same Cleverly-is-the-savior thing that keeps getting recycled, re-worded, attributed to different people, and reprinted every day :(
The moment he puts a foot wrong they're going to descend on him like a horde of vultures. :(

Its not just outsiders who are singing his tune. United are actively promoting Tom too: Manchester United Official Web Site - Ferdinand endorses Tom Cleverley. Rightfully so if you ask me. I can't see a problem in Tom Cleverley getting the column inches he deserves. Wilshere got it last year and it didn't hurt his career even when Arsenal were struggling to put anyone away during the run in. We have a potentially exceptionally good young player on our hands and that's something we should be celebrating not playing down. I actually think the more others believe in him the more Cleverley will believe in himself and that all of this attention he's getting will only benefit him.

exactly - it's natural that there'd be excitement about a new face. Not necessarily a negative. He's clearly a grounded and determined character and his loan periods will have done him the power of good, not just in match experience but seeing the reality of life at other clubs compared to OT. I have every confidence in him.

....and the team this season for that matter

Sure hope so! He's in good hands of course, as long as he continues to keep his feet on the ground and continue working on his play, he should be ok.

It's just that I get a tad irritated when the season hasn't even started and there's this much about.

Thought he played really well today. Great range of passing and fantastically quick feet.

Reminds me of Iniesta the way he runs with the ball (not comparing him to Iniesta)

Yup, I definitely see the Iniesta style there, He also always seems to come out with the ball after a confrontation.

He was good in possession, but he flitted in and out of the game in parts. He'll only get better though. Overall, I was very pleased with him. I'd still expect Carrick to play against Spurs though.

It was not a special performance. A midfield of Cleverley and Anderson is not strong enough defensively.

I think he was excellent, always felt safe when he had the ball. Cleverley is top class.

We don't always have to be that defensive either though. We weren't playing Chelsea or Liverpool. We don't necessarily always have to play a deep lying central midfielder.

at whose expense?

serious question - i feel Carrick is a starter for the Suprs game, dunno who will partner him as both Tom and Nano look like good options.

Was average. For a creative player, he didn't try to create much. Too many simple passes and runs.

First game for him though, he'll only improve.

Good perfomance didn't embarass himself, Needs to play alongside a more defensively sound players as does Anderson meaning they should only rarely be playing together and possibly only in a CM 3. Today was ok.

Very solid today. Comfortable in possession and formed a solid partnership with Ando.

I'm personally liking him and Ando in the middle more then Ando and Carrick.

He was good but he's not a creative player. Good passer, dribbler, keeps possession and he has some good link up play too but he ain't the solution to our "creative" problems.

He is not a creative player. He is very agile and quick to pass and move, but he lacks imagination in his passing.

Much due to our lack of off the ball-movement. Especially in the second half. Compare that to Barca.

No complaints. He linked up well, and showed good character. Anderson and him did well and WBA were a test after they got that goal. We passed it well, maybe tried to overplay but we can be happy with that.

It will come as he settles in the first team. I believe we are not trying to play too many risk passes at the moment, even Anderson has cut the holywood balls out, despite it being integral to his play.

It really won't, he's not a creative player, despite everyones big hopes. But he will be a very good one, none the less.

He can be creative. His crossings good. He's good at slipping balls though. I think some are reading too much into this performance. The mistake, put us on the back foot and our midfield did well away from home to restrict WBA....

Both of them did well. The whole team was tired in the 2nd half, which is expected until we get to higher fitness levels.

Both players have good technique and close control.

Cleverly did nothing. Both wrong or creative

We have 2 more weeks to decide on him. I think he'll make a couple of more maybe sub appearances, or even start by the end of the month

tidy on the ball, didnt do enough off of it.

he and anderson were guilty at times of being too forward thinking, as soon as either of them played a pass they'd bomb forward. when moves broke down we got caught with a lot of space between midfield and defence a few times. still, on the ball they were encouraging, in a three with carrick or fletch holding they could work really well

Decent today. Tidy player but I thought he was a bit in and out of the game at times. Anderson and Cleverley isn't probably the best combination to be fair though.

 Madness.

Decide on what exactly? He's done brilliant and received praise from Fergie in BOTH of his only 2 Manchester United appearances.

Cleverley was great in possession. He was literally walking past West Brom players when he had the ball at his feet and the sign of how composed he was in possession was the fact that they started fouling him to stop him getting started during the second half.

My only criticism of Cleverley today was that he didn't do the same amount of defensive work that he did last Sunday against City. In the Community Shield he was all over Toure like a rash but today he was sometimes guilty of watching the game instead of putting the boot in. As a box-to-box midfielder its necessary to attack AND defend and I think Cleverley only justified hopes he could do the former today when at times it was needed for him to do more of the latter as well.

What? Why

He was good in pre season indeed. That's why he started today. But is he the one we need to replace Scholesy? Too early to tell. We have time till the end of transfer window. His future is undecided yet imo

His future isn't undecided because he's made 2 official appearances for United, played exceptionally well in one and played good in the other, in tough conditions, and received praise in both post match press conferences from Fergie. His future is at United, and he'll play a lot of games this season too.

And he isn't there to replace Scholes. In the same way Valencia wasn't bought to replace Ronaldo.

Future undecided long term or for this season?

had a brilliant game today. His positioning when not in position was excellent. Anderson dominated the first half..less so in the second.

Cleverley was in there throughout.

what a player we have on our hands.

Agreed. I thought he played very well, he looks so comfortable on the ball, so calm and composed.
