Gaming Tom Clancy's - The Division | Division 2 announced

What frame rates are you getting?
Surprisingly good. Running at 4k with only a couple of insignificant settings dropped down a notch, I'm running about 35-40 FPS, which is acceptable for me. If it's the same in the full release, I might even be tempted to buy the PC version as well as the PS4 one.

Never played the first one, but I'm really enjoying the beta. Especially coming from Anthem. I'll get it, most likely I'll just get the standard edition, but it's annoying that some story missions are locked behind that year one pass.

They are not. You will play the same content. The only different is that season pass has a 7 day early access to all 3 chapters from the first year.

State of the Game - Wednesday March 6th, 2019

Today Trick Dempsey (Senior Game Designer at Massive Entertainment) joined Hamish to discuss Endgame Progression

Endgame

Strongholds vs. Missions

Strongholds are vastly bigger, and meaner, than missions. Strongholds will be important to the plot development of the game and are extremely significant. Missions will need to be completed before attempting Strongholds. The concept of Strongholds are introduced very early on in the main campaign, but the concept becomes ramped up in the Endgame.

What happens when you hit level 30?
  • During the main campaign you'll be working thru a bunch of Missions and a handful of Strongholds to get to the final Stronghold that remains locked until you reach level 30. At that point, it will be unlocked and revealed. Once that final Stronghold is completed, World Tier 1 is unlocked, Tidal Basin is revealed and the living world will completely change.

  • Previously established control points that you've captured suddenly become dynamic as the Black Tusk faction comes into play and factions are pushed into the open world. Previously established fast travel locations are no longer available and must be re-established. Most importantly, due to the influx of the Black Tusk, Specializations are introduced because "you're gonna need a bigger gun.", and you're vastly weaker in relation to the new faction.

World Tiers 1-3 Unlocked
  • 3 Strongholds, that were previously faction based Strongholds, will now be repopulated with Black Tusk and need to be retaken. Those will have 2 invaded missions that are tied to each Stronghold.
    • After completing the first Stronghold, you'll progress to the next World Tier 2. Finishing the second will push you into World Tier 3 and finishing the last of the 3 Strongholds will push you into World Tier 4.
  • "The Snitch" & The Deck of 52 becomes active
    • 52 Named bosses, each faction matching a suit, that will award you loot and commendations for "completing the deck" and getting their cards. They won't spawn again until your deck is complete.
  • Cassie Mendoza "The Gun Runner" is revealed
    • A roaming random spawn vendor that cycles every day and a half that will have special loot/guns that scale to your World Tier.
World Tier 4
  • Priority Target Network - An interconnected set of 7 tiered Bounties inside of different named zones that scale in difficulty as you progress thru them (progression similar to the "hard", "challenging" & "heroic" ways that were familiar to players in TD1).

  • Bounties (this is not endgame, but was discussed after the Priority Target Network to explain how they happen)
    • During the campaign you'll meet Otis Sykes and you'll get access to bounties that you spend Target Intel to play.

    • Target Intel is garnered thru mission completion and endgame content.
  • A final Stonghold "Tidal Basin" will need to be completed to move into World Tier 5

World Tier 5

  • TBD later - gotta keep you guessing and excited.

Keeping the open world "fresh"

  • Interesting discussion about the logic behind the rules and modifiers to keep endgame & bounties fresh and changing. Less about being random. More about being controlled and deliberate, while allowing each experience to be unique thru the use of the modifiers.

  • A future podcast will discuss these background mechanics.

I cannot believe how much end game content there is at launch. It's so refreshing and rare. I've decided to work Saturday and Sunday just so I can free up more time to play next week.

I think they have learned their lessons from the launch of D1. I think they said that it was around update 1.3 or 1.4 that they realised they needed to open up more of a dialogue with their players and I think this approach has paid dividends and it looks as though they are continuing in the vein :)

Update 1.3 not a good time for The Division, Underground getting 1 hit by shotgunners

Any other games you play?
I have a discord group going for playing games and Division is hopefully going to be a big thing if you're interested?
If not, see you in the DZ!

I play BFV and Apex at the moment mostly and Div 2 when it releases.

I am interested, yes!

Launches tomorrow for those who have pre-ordered the game - can't wait to log some hours tomorrow!

Cool overview:

@swooshboy Can't wait for this. It's fair to say that I won't be too fresh tomorrow at work
Agreed! I really enjoyed the beta's - there seemed to be things to loot hidden in almost every corner - so I think it will certainly reward exploration. There isn't too much incentive to do that in a beta where things don't carry over, but will be making sure I do tomorrow!

Aye. It's crazy how lively the light zone is compared to div1.

I think I will probably spend 2 hours on customizing the character and then the first 2 hours in game regretting the decisions.

What platform are you on?

That sounds similar to my expectations too!

It sounds as though the customization options are going to be greatly improved from the first game - so that's a plus!

On PS4 - you?

It looks pretty good - way much more than the first game and seems to be a proper character creator!

@swooshboy Afro with sideburns, sleeveless shirt and covered in tattoos. Ohh, and don't forget to equip the M249 (the exotic version looks mint).

Sounds good!

I think I will go Rifle and MMR as my loadout - The ARs always lose accuracy when you go full auto. Was never a fan of SMGs or Shotguns in D1, but did occasionally use a LMG. I really liked headshots in the first game, so will likely go sniper and AR / Rifle combo this time around.

Of course, all the weapons have been given an overhaul - so will be good to try as many as possible. That is the good thing about the play through as you work towards the end game - you basically equip whatever you find because you keep finding better gear. So it's a great time to try the different weapons etc.

That is another thing that I liked in both betas so far. There was a lot more diversity in weapons used especially in pvp, and it was refreshing to see something different than everyone running a house and LWM4. I hope it stays the same in endgame.

Erm... Possibly. Good previews for it?
Not sure. Haven't really been looking at any. I played the beta, though and I say it's good. Does that count?

Seriously, though. As flawed as the first one was initially, I played the nuts off it and loved it. There were too many cheese/glitches early on and they messed the loot system up, which the game kinda never recovered from until quite a while in....but the gun-play, teamwork aspects and the Dark Zone concept really shone, despite that. That's what kept it fun, even despite a lack of end-game content. By all accounts, they have really learned from their mistakes for the sequel.

I played a little last night and I was getting some pretty nasty frame-rate issues at times, which were also present in the beta. Hopefully it becomes more stable soon.

@swooshboy early impressions?
Really enjoying it - have done a few missions and some of the side missions and it's excellent.

I played on and off yesterday and didn't have a single disconnect and didn't notice any other teething issues - one of the smoothest launches I've seen so far!

The gun play feels a lot better that D1 - the weapons feel more varied and the time to kill is shorter than in D1 - at least from my memory. The thing that makes perhaps the biggest difference is that your bullets have more of an effect - whether that be breaking armour off of the named bosses (in D1 you had to eliminate the armour bar before you started causing them damage, but there was no visual cue on this). Here you can see armour falling away as you shoot them, and hear it breaking as your bullets impact. For enemies without armour, they stagger when you shoot them - which not only disrupts them firing at you, but also means that every bullet you fire feels like it has weight and and effect. So combat and gunplay becomes much more satisfying as a result.

The other facet of this is that the AI of the NPCs feels much improved and more real. They will actively flank you and so even the unarmoured NPCs can prove a challenge if they attack in numbers - such as in the Control Points that you need to capture. But even then, it is not them simply all rushing you - some are firing from distance, some are flanking and others will charge.

I have tried a few different weapons and there is a marked difference between them - both in how different weapons within the same class feel, and between the classes themselves. There doesn't feel to be one 'right' choice and they all seem viable so far.

The shift to Washington is also positive IMO. The world itself feels much more alive than NYC did - the different time of year helps, but there feels like there is much more environmental objects everywhere - feels very real. There are things to loot in every corner so it rewards exploration and I think this will be a game that I sink a lot of time into.

Sounds good, I know I’ll plow hours into it like the first.

Yep same here.

It also made me remember what it was like to play the levels 1-30 of D1 - it is not about perfecting your loadout as you are constantly upgrading your gear and weapons through loot and drops, with the benefit of there being much more loot! When you explore, you find different loot 'containers' - bags that may have cosmetics or consumables, chests that may have gear, and weapon cases that have weapons. So if you see a weapons case you know it has a weapon in it. So it feels as though it rewards exploration more, because you can see the different types of loot and its not just RNG where any container could have anything.

Plus you are always always finding things that are slightly better than what you have - and you sometimes find a weapon that is a nice jump up in DMG and you really feel this during the combat.

Do i need to play the first for this one ?
No. It has a slight storyline but nothing important. It's a loot based shooter so it's more about finding better items to progress, rather than completing story levels.

Although the story line not really important, you have to admire the level of detail that the developers have put in this game.

I am currently level 20 and no 2 side missions are the same. It's a huge improvement from the usual side missions in div 1.

Yeah, there's a nice level of detail and the story has actually been decent so far. It's not completely throw away like Destiny. Some of the missions have been great, I really like the American History Museum, you could even read the displays.

Overall it's a nice evolution of the first game so far. My only issues have been a bit of slow down and the character creator being so bad that it's almost pointless. It's even worse than the first game, which is odd as Wildlands had a decent character creator. You can't even have a bald head, how the hell is that a thing?
