So we are writing off the league for the next 4/5 years then?

The other two defenders Jose has brought in are both 24. What we need right now, as well as a ball player centreback, is someone is good enough to immediately step in, and give the other two room to breathe and develop.

I totally agree with this, United fans need to chill. We are not yet a fantastic well oiled PL wining team but City had a lot of luck last year, yes they played well and seduced the media but they won a few games in the 90th to 97th minute!

The middle group of teams like Fulham, Wolves, Everton, West Ham, Leicester, Southampton, Burnley, Palace and Newcastle all look to have improved the PL from position 7th to 15th and City will not win 32 games again. Arsenal and Chelsea will also improve and 27 to 29 wins may be enough to win the PL this year.

United can improve from 25 to 28 to 29 wins but we need a great start, Can City really improve on their top 6 record last year which was P10 W7 D1 L2 and there is no way they are improving on the stats with the rest of the league P28 W25 D3 L0, its not happening.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will all improve significantly, Spurs is the only club I'm not quite sure about due to fatigue of their star players! We have improved our spine after a difficult pre season we should see a much improved United from last year but it could be a genuine 4 way battle this year?

Yeah, you can maybe make that argument about a midfielder, but for a CB there absolutely is a big difference between being slow and very slow.

Still, I definitely want Toby over Maguire.

I think we do.
Too much negative press and moaning from some of our fans are preventing us from noting a few important things that can tilt the title our way next season.

1. Sanchez. In my head is very much like a brand new signing. It's like we just bought him this Summer. And many have forgotten how good he is.

2. Fred. That lad is going to transform our midfield, I tell you. His vision and ability to dictate play will improve our team significantly.

3. Pereira. Like Sanchez, he is also looking like a brand new purchase who offers top quality to our middle and overall play.

4. Toby. He is coming. I can feel it. One of our major problems last season was our defence. I know people will point to the stats that say otherwise but in modern football, play starts from the back. A ball playing, experienced center back makes a massive difference in a team's overall quality. Also, we lost some very crucial games last season because of defensive mistakes. The FA Cup Final quickly comes to mind. A skilled and experienced defender could have made a big difference? Who knows?

5. Lindelof. This is a strange call but I have a feeling that kid is going to be huge next season. He had a fantastic World Cup and next season will be his second at United which means he has had enough time to adapt. I see him staking his claim in the team. Also, people are worried about our right back position. I'm not. We forget that Lindelof can be excellent cover for the right back. He played right back pretty well for Sweden in the U-21 and last Euro. He also played it a number of times for Benfica and even for us last season.

6. The new coaching staff. Need I say more here. Lukaku, Pereira etc have already spoken about the impact Carrick has been having on them. I think the new coaching crew will make the team play a lot better.

Nothing wrong with signing the occasional player close to 30. If you have a look around the rest of our squad it's really quite young. Plus we added a further 2 young players already this summer.

Yes, so I don't understand these sarcastic green smilies or "huh huh huh he turns 40 in 11 years" post when people raise concerns. There is clearly a good possibility that he could go the way of the aforementioned.

Another example of someone who was at the height of his powers at 29 and was not nearly as impressive just the season after is RvP. Not buying it that it was all Moyes and anyway, he went to shit the rest of his career.

So? In '99 we won loads of games in added time. That didn't make us lucky, it made us good. It meant that we never stopped trying to win, we never gave up.

Pretending City were lucky last year just sounds bitter. City, last year, smashed the league. And despite coming 2nd we weren't in contention after about October. City haven't massively strengthened this summer but neither have we.

I'd expect us to challenge for the top-4, but I don't see us being in contention for the title

What worries me the most is that a lot of players were in great shape and became injury prone at United afterwards...
Toby would be an excellent choice if he can still injury free.

Not unless Martial is added to the deal as Levy is not strengthen you without you doing similar to us.

Levy will not budge, and he will move him on abroad after our window closes, as at 29, 30 this season, Toby will not be wanting to be sitting on the Bench all season. Levy will take a lesser fee to sell abroad.

Looks like Rojo will be goon soon though.
But a key could be that Dalot kid. If he is as good as I hear, he can be useful both at the right and left back positions.
 
You lot can have all your positivity on here, but the toxicity breeds from Mourinho. He might not even play Alderweireld after one mistake and resort to Smalling or Jones. Alderweireld HAS to play in the top level straight away and hit the ground running. Whichever centre-back partner he will be with, they will be unreliable by either getting injured often or silly mistakes.

I hope Lindelof has one of those infamous 2nd seasons where he adapts (like with Evra or Vidic). I would love to see 2 ball playing centre-backs who are defensively sound. It will allow Pogba/Fred/Matic to push up.

Thanks. City are the favourites no doubt but one has to wonder if they can win it again. Back to back wins of the premiership are extremely difficult to pull off. Every team will play them now with greater motivation and in some instances, desire to get one back.

It took him over a season to bench Pogba for poor performances, he gave Sanchez half a season uncontested, I think it's fair to say Alderweireld will get his chance.

Pep has had to deal with that at both Barcelona and Bayern, they will still be the team to beat.
We have the players to mount a serious challenge,it depends on what style Mourinho wants to play.A ball playing defender is a must,somebody comfortable bringing the ball into midfield so Toby or Maguire is a must in my opinion.

All his non-favourite players. Would never give them 3-4 games in a row.
 
Toby's signing is a big vote of no confidence to the experienced heads currently residing in our defence. If the likes of Valencia, Smalling, Young, Jones and Rojo can't lead the defence then what the feck we're keeping them for? Age and/or consistency is certainly not at their side.

Ill be very surprised if Rojo is the veteran leaving United's defence in the next 1-2 years. Mou might keep Jones around and loan Lindelof and/or Tuanzebe for a year but unless Jones and Smalling start showing consistency then they might be on their way out too.

If that’s the case then Levy is a fool. How does he know that he will sell him to a team abroad. I can’t see him potentially losing out on 50 mill or whatever it is we would pay and letting him go for free next season.

Thanks. Yeah, some things are contestable in the post but overall, we've got a pretty decent chance. While i mean no one harm, one of the things that could be interesting to see next season is how some of our closest rivals - especially City - handle the type of injury crisis we had last season. I keep saying we lost out in the title race when Pogba ( our top outfield talent) and some of our other midfield casts got injured. Carrick, and Herrera (or Fellaini) were also out at the same period. We also had (arguably) our best defender, Bailly, out most of the season. I am not saying other teams didn't have injury challenges or emphatically stating we would have won the title if all our players had been fit, but those injuries came at crucial points and happened to crucial players (especially in the midfield.) for elongated periods.
I am sure we will be a lot stronger this season if we are luckier with injuries.
 
Getting a world class ball playing defender is what we needed since Rio Ferdinand left but 60m is too much for an injured prone player close to 30. If we are willing to spend 60m on a defender, why not Milan Skriniar who is younger, stronger and well on his way to be the best centre back in the world.
