Toby Alderweireld

In fairness, low release clauses can lead to escalating bonuses or agent fees. If the point is Spurs not getting a penny more fair enough, but you can't compare an all in cost with a release clause like that.
This.

Its not like the club is going to save 25-45 £M (whatever fee one wants to believe) if we wait until next year. so we can spend it somewhere else Come next summer the player and/or his agent will ask for that money in a sign-on bonus or ask to be compensated salary-wise. Or his agent is not good at what he does.

Its the total cost for Aldweireld over the term of his contract (fee, salary, bonuses agent fees) that is relevant for the buying club. And it will be more or less the same this summer or next. Where that money ends up is a matter of allocation between Tottenham and the player.

Don't need a signing at CB, but at least he's an upgrade if he comes through, unlike Maguire who isn't better than anyone else on the roster.

Still disappointed the real areas of need in the squad will be left unaddressed. Both fullbacks and RW. Oh well.

We signed Dalot? It’s just LB and RW.

Waiting for the Sunday supplement to start at 10.30 am this morning to hear what they have to say about transfer latest news.

Please tell me we're not seriously considering paying circa £60m for an injury prone near 30 year old who couldn't hack it at Atlético Madrid who will be available in less than a year for £25m - the mind boggles, and it'll end in tears as well, in a years time we'll be begging West Ham to up their offer to £23m just to take him off our hands.....

Injury prone? Because of one 3/4 month hamstring injury? Does that make Pogba injury prone?

Who else do you suggest ?

If this does get over the line, many of you will eat humble pie.

There's a statistic out there that is something like Alderweireld has been in the best defence in the league in every season he's played in his career, or something similar

This "injury prone" myth is never going to go away, is it? Just because of one bad injury

I mean he literally played every single PL game in the 15-16 season

I think Toby is the only option for Jose , Mina I feel will be just like the rest of our Centre halves. bang average. I don’t agree with the 60mill fee though but that’s just typical Levy. 50 mill will be more than enough for him .

Even if we got only two top draw seasons out of him that would be good. Anything that helps bridge the gap on city can only be viewed as good, even if it is short term.

I’d rather have a 29 year old Rolls Royce than a brand new Kia (sorry to any Kia owners out there ;)). Couldn’t think of another analogy.

Point being he is class regardless of his age.

It's also pretty common nowadays for players to carry on playing at a top level well into their 30s. I remember we used to give only one year contract extensions to players above 30. But just look at all the top players in the world now. They are all in their 30s and don't look like slowing down.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out Alderwiereld was the only real target and Maguire/Mina were simply fabricated rumours to coax the deal further forward.

I've not come here to add anything to the conversation but to politely ask can people stop saying fecking roster!

This isn't American Football.

Just like Morata last year . That was a brilliant piece of business by Woodward.

I think Toby is the number one target. However i also think we have lined up a signing for deadline day (akin to fellaini) if the Toby deal falls through.

Think it’ll be more like they were hedging their bets and have most of the groundwork done on the other deals so if Toby wasn’t/isn’t available they ain’t just left holding their dicks and can try and put one of them through. Much like Morata last year. Apparently were working 3 deals for strikers but Lukaku was always the main target.

50-60 million though. My word that's a lot.

As i mentioned in another thread. Yerry Mina was bought for 11 million euros 8 months ago, has hardly played, and openly stated in the media he wants a club with "less pressure". The latest fee rumoured for him was 35 million euros.

Literally a 3x increase in his fee for NO reason. The transfer market is broken because everyone has money and the top clubs are paying it.

Toby is a top PL CB. He's in a team that's a top 4 rivial, and we have a history of taking their best players. Anything <60 million is a win for us.

Agreed, and judging by his appearance and performances at the WC he totally looks after himself. Expensive yes. Bad business? I don’t think so. Top defender and World Class in my opinion.

Yes it is but it is very much a sellers market this year I reckon.

Yep, the market is extremely inflated and there's really not that many good players available. Toby would be a good player for us, at the same time it really feels like we're getting fleeced.

Noooooo.....enjoyed my summer not listening to those anti Jose Man Utd idiots and now I'm compelled to watch it again.

Great purchase if we end up getting him. Excellent player, and just what we need elevate the quality of our defence.

As for his age, if he gives us two or three seasons at the highest level, nobody will care. Heck, even if it's just one season at the highest level, like RvP, it's still a good purchase if it's what bumps us up a level to title challengers.

If we can just get a quality attacker for the right side in, we certainly have the squad to challenge City.

60 million is a lot, yes, but we needed a commander CB since Vida. There are not many 25 year olds like that. He is kind of a player that can lift the whole performance of our back four so I am not really worried about the money. Since we didn’t buy a winger or left back, we will be well below our spending range this summer anyway.

Yup, good point.

So a BBC bloke claims Levy should take 60m (interesting that a BBC journo has an exact fee to share) and a top belgian Journo is confirming negotiations are taking place.

This is actually huge news. Terreur is the first real confirmation of talks!!

Meh some people will never be happy. Legitimately feels like a lot on this forum will only be happy if we sign the likes of Varane, not realising that we have a long way to go to even challenge city.

Any player available that improves our first XI should be purchased. Toby definitely fits that criteria.

hell of a lot of money for someone his age. Dont mind signing players this age if they have an impact like RVP though, so no pressure..

(and even RVP went downhill fast after 2 years)
