Toby Alderweireld

What he would obviously improve us with is his on the ball ability and passing out the back. Dont think we'd be any different defensively

Meh - he wasnt that bad today. Judging from the comments it feels like we've just watched the Loris Karius of defenders.

Sign him up

I will get jumped by mentioning this but anyhow i would prefer Kompany ahead of Toby, he is everything we need in a centre back.

Apart from being injury prone the guy is a leader, excellent communicator and a damn good defender.

I think he's a good centre-back but I really don't see what he offers that a couple of ours don't already do. Not for big money anyway. Our issues are mainly down reliability anyway.

and unattainable...

So all of a sudden Maguire, Lenglet are better CBs? Can't agree with that.
Lenglet isn't yet for me, but Maguire isn't that far off imo. Skriniar would be the player we should push for, but Inter likely won't sell for anything reasonable.

Better suited, better potential. Apart from being ok on the ball I don’t see how the spurs fella is that much different from what we have. He’s another passive type, not a leader. Also not convinced he’s over that injury. Lastly spurs don’t sell players unless it suits them. I wouldn’t be splashing 50m+ on him

Maguire is suddenly better than Alderweireld now apparently...

Poor today, had 1 good shot if thats the kind of thing you like about your CBs. Other than that a night to forget

"The Spurs Fella"?! :nervous: He was touted best defender in England previous season by a lot of fans.

His price might be steep but it also tells you something about how he's rated and that Spurs would like to keep him. Imagine Smalling being talked about as a 60-65m defender.

at fault for the goal, lost Umtiti on the corner. Lets buy him next summer on the cheap

Watch it again. That's Fellainis man.

How are there negative comments? He wasn't terrible today and every other game he was fantastic. Definitely one of the best defenders of the WC along with Varane, Godin, Maguire and Vadi.

Mangala was a transfer record for a CB. And thats more than an inflated fee because you want to keep a player. He was actually bought for a high fee at the time by a club who could pick out of most of the CBs around due to their money.

Besides, Spurs finished lower than us. Whats good for them isnt necessarily good for us.

If we were going to sign one of Spurs CBs we should probably look at the best one Verthongen, or the young one with potential Sanchez rather than the one with pretty good long passing but has problems defending.

Nope, Fellaini was defending in the zone. Alderweireld lost Umtiti. Watch before the corner gets taken, Alderweireld is marking Umtiti. Fellaini tried to save it, but came too late.

He is comfortable on the ball, but not amazing. I think he would be good in a 2, just not mobile enough to defend the channels all the time against nimble wingers/fullbacks.

Really ? I didn't found him very serene against Brazil or tonight. He had the bad clearance the time he faced pressing, do not really did some good interventions (he was on the good side) but not enough and don't really helped offensively (besides the shot) or in the construction

I think if we consider all the tournament, Verts and Boyata were better.

This World cup has convinced me that he is the wrong player for us. He didn't have a bad World cup - but I feel there is a reason other than his contract that he isn't a regular at Spurs.

IMO Belgium played the wrong formation. They had 3 CBs, all of them in their 30s,none of them really quick, especially Verts and Kompany. Add to that a static midfield with Fellaini and Witsel, they didn't protect their CBs well enough IMO.

About Alderweireld, I don't know why people are saying that he is not good enough. Granted he was not great in this WC but was far from bad.
Also Maguire and Lenglet are not better than Alderweireld. One good tournament doesn't make a player great. Let's first wait to see how Maguire does against a decent opposition before calling him WC

We are seasons away from seriously competing against Shitty let alone win the CL. We might as well admit to that and build for the future.

Its like everyone in here all of a sudden are Alderweireld experts after watching 1-2 games in the World Cup with him.

Its kind of like when all of your semi-football fans watched Liverpool trash us 4-1 and deciding Vidic is a terrible defender.

He was regarded the best CB in the league before he was frozen out/injured. And he wasnt that bad for Belgium like some of the comments suggests - Personally I thought Kompany and Vertonghen looked more out of depth being both slow and not good at adapting to each other. Belgium's problem is fitting 3 leaders in. And at the same time allowing Fellaini and two wing backs to bomb forward. Lots of open space to counter-attack in which probably would make even Maldini look bad too.

Maybe I am mistaken then. I haven't seen it since it was live on tv and was paying attention to the finish on the replays. If so, apologies.

Yeah Umtiti was Alderweireld's man, Fellaini for Belgium on corners (just like for us btw) most of the time is a free man near front post.

Alderweireld yesterday was probably their worst defender, lost the ball plenty of times, done some stupid mistakes, the goal aside. Overall he's been their best defender though I think, Kompany's getting a lot of undeserved praise, guy's a ticking flop-bomb. Would still take him here.

There isn’t. It’s purely down to his contract.

Yeah, it was Alderweireld who marked Umtiti and Fellaini was standing at near post. When Alderweireld lost his man, Fellaini tried to head the ball and was second late. It was Alderweireld's mistake.

I thought Verts was worse if I'm being honest. Even his body language he looked completely lost or afraid. The same with Chadli and Dembele. Just watch how they walk in or out of the tunnel. The occasion was too much for them.

I can't stress enough how terrible Chadli was

Spurs' players, bottled it.

No there isn't

Kompany has been appalling, the match against Brazil he was the only Belgium defender to not win a single header.
