Toby Alderweireld

Don't know why you people are bothering with Glaston.
So true, the thread immediately becomes about him.
Fwiw given the price Spurs are demanding I don't see the point when we need to strengthen elsewhere.
He's better at playing the ball than our centre backs but I think he's suspect defensively, and if Spurs want 70 million we really need to look elsewhere.

The EPL window closes and what happens?
Barca aren't spending big on a CB, Madrid doesn't seem to be Linked at all.
Let's say its PSG and they look around and have no competition for the signature.
You've given them all the power. They won't be raising their bid since they would have already if they really wanted him.
If foreign clubs are waiting for EPL clubs to sit out then they're not going that high anyway.
It makes no sense.
What you're saying is Spurs are better off without an auction which is a ridiculous statement to make

Exactly, and then they will have to accept what PSG is offering, or the pack of quik-boil spaghetti Juventus will bid, or risk losing him to a PL rival for £25m next season.

honestly, his distribution is worth the price tag. theres 3-4 years left in him (injury barring) and one of the abilities players don't ever lose is passing. He's hands down one of the best distributors of the ball i've seen from CB in my lifetime, my only concern is he definitely seems to function better in a back 3 rather than with just one cb partner. But against most teams, We would be facing one striker and Toby can find himself with enough space to be influential.

The importance of a ball playing CB can't be overstated. It would improve our entire team having someone who can accurately play the ball out from the back. He and Bailly could form a formidable partnership for a few season that could be easily among the best in Europe.

Have you seen he price tag? Spurs want £70m. He'd have to be Baresi in his prime for us to pay that.

price tag means nothing to me because its not my money. would be 140 million to address 3 areas that need it (Assuming dalot realises his potential) which i think isn't the worst.

Well, we are a business and money means something to it. We aren't going to pay that kind of fee for a player we can sing for a third of that next year.

Yup and using the same logic, the selling club won’t turn down making 20 million extra. Just need to play hardball I suppose but whatever we spend it content that he’ll be worth it.

I didn't watch the game today, just highlights, but for the second goal he lost his man in the box and they scored, then reviewing the first Tunisia goal it looks like it's he lost his man again and they scored as a result. Not sure though, but he was caught in no man's land by the looks of it. Not the type of defending you would want from a 50m defender, if you ask me.

People still talking about alderweireld? We've been more strongly linked with Jerome boateng recently.

How's the search for a better CB than Toby going?

Re. Toby, you should be aware that the transfer window for Prem clubs shuts on August 9. However, the window for overseas clubs remains open until the end of August. This is something that I imagine figures into Levy's thinking, namely that if United don't offer a deal to his liking before the Prem window shuts he'll still have time to sell him outside the Prem if he wishes.
We'v been linked with boateng from Bayern more than alderweireld recently. This looks like another one like rose where we asked, levy quoted a price that was too high and we moved on.

Alderweireld also assisted Hazard the other day, who plays for a London rival team. Shameful behaviour really, Spurs fans must be livid. He may even team up with former Arsenal man Vermaelen in defence later on in this tournament. I mean, are there no boundaries to his treachery?

Don't want.Over rated in my opinion.

This, I agree with.
I think Smalling, Rojo and Baily are all better.
Though, if Jose can improve Toby (as he does with most defenders), he would move ahead of the 3 defenders mentioned, above.

I get what you’re saying but if we overspend there then we miss out somewhere else. It’s not a limitless budget. Caving to Levy will set a precedent for future deals and besides he’s not worth the price

Still feel this is likely to happen, only way it doesn't is if Spurs bend over and give him the money he wants

Have a feeling he is our first choice and we will end up paying 65-69 million for him bonuses included once Belgiums World Cup is over.

Or comparing their defensive abilities rather than their long ball abilities

 seriously the hype sometimes is funny. Rojo isn't a better defender than Alderweireld, and he isn't just a guy who plays long balls.

Not a chance. We refused to pay £48m for Perisic last year and I think we'll stick to our guns. He might be our first choice but we have options.
