Toby Alderweireld

If Levy really wants Van Dijk money then Alderweireld will stay where he is, of course most likely is that in the last week he'll sell him to a club like Inter for half the price.

Not a chance. We refused to pay £48m for Perisic last year and I think we'll stick to our guns. He might be our first choice but we have options.

Probably but just a hunch that we will be paying extra somehow.

Looked a fair bit better than Vertonghen yesterday.

Still think if not for the Levy factor this would be an excellent deal for all parties. But if I were United I would go down 2 roads:
1. Tell his people that we're keen, will offer him a huge f*cking salary but he has to put in a formal transfer request
2. Don't bother and move onto other targets

If Toby is that keen on a move to us than 1 shouldn't be a problem, especially as he's been benched for a year. Not sure why he'd have much loyalty to Spurs.

There is no way we will pay a premium figure for him considering his contract situation.

I think this one will have to wait a year.

I see Glastonbury is peddling the laughable notion that clubs decide where players go, not the players themselves.

Toby will go where he wants. The buying club simply has to match the best offer - if that even.

The idea you can “ship him abroad” is ridiculous.

This is true for any club or player. The idea that Spurs are the exception is hilarious.

Its not really as straight forward as that though is it? If we get a bid from another club that Toby is happy to go to and that Spurs would prefer for him to go to the Club can select that offer and reject all others. Bale reportedly had the choice of Madrid or United, with United apparently offering more money, Levy accepted the Madrid offer. Chelsea were probably still interested in Modric when we sold to Madrid also.

It all depends on what offers we get for Toby and from what clubs, if Toby has his heart on staying in England then we will peobably have to accept a domestic offer if not we can deal abroad. Its the same situation with Martial.

Probably for his loyalty bonus payment, that's the main reason we don't see a lot of transfer requests being handed in.

Can't remember the last time a player submitted one. Mahrez maybe?
From his view, there's really no point for him making a request. He can leave for peanuts next year. The ball is firmly in Spurs' court.

Unless he signs a new contract I still think he will be sold, I wouldn’t have a problem selling him domestically for the right amount, in or around £50M.

Still think it will be done around that as well. Spurs might also be trying to get someone in before selling.

Immense tonight comfortably outshining Kompany and Vertonghen, Looking forward to seeing him in a red shirt in August (I hope)

Does he not have a performance thread? This is for transfer related content.

I think he would be perfect for us but I’d prefer not to get bent over by Levy.

If we’re going to break the bank then we should go in again for Skriniar. Would also be thrilled with Maguire

He’s currently the best centre back in Europe; pure class and the epitome of a modern elite defender.

He’s looked very good for England this WC and has been good for Leicester as well. I would prefer Maguire over Jones and Lindelof for sure.

Lindelof has also looked pretty good at this World Cup. Our soon-to-be new signing Alderweireld looked immense tonight. I like Maguire but think we need an experienced player. And Jones can feck off.

Not been impressed with his performance tonight and generally been average in the world cup.

He is good, but you see the difference between true elite in Varane and very good in Alderweireld.

What? Varane has been class as well but what exactly has he done that's been so much better?

If Mourinho has anything about him he should go for McGuire rather than Toby aka Smalling.

Just feel that he is a stronger and more dominant defensive presence. Much quicker, better in the air, more of a natural leader. Alderwerield is better in a 2 than a 3 to be fair, no CB likes being drawn into those wide positions. However I am not sure that he is at the level he was 2 years ago before his injuries, he seemed to get the label of best defender in the league while injured, have not see that at the elite level from him, tail end of the CL or in international tournaments.

Varane is better with the ball at his feet, biggest difference for me.

Which is strange considering that one of the things that Alderweireld gets most praised for is his passing and ability to play from the back. He can pick out a great pass given time and space, but different challenge when being pressed and harried, that is where Varane is clearly superior(as a ball player)

Just doesn't look as comfortable with the ball, it's kinda clear to see when he's on it. I still think Alderweireld is a great defender and I would love to have him at United but Varane is the better player imo. No point dreaming of Varane anyways, no way we're getting him.

He is a £30m player at best.

I would prefer we went for a Godin or Varane, yeah I know they would cost more but they are a couple of levels above Toby.

He's been the best Belgian centre back in my opinion. One game doesn't change that and I still think we should go straight after him.
